  • Comic Book Herald's 15 favorite comics of 2022!
Honestly, I’ve been making best of lists for comics for close to a decade, and I’m happier with my 2022 selections than any prior year. Not only do I love the picks, but it feels like the healthiest variety of styles, creators and publishers I’ve kept up with, and that’s fueling my love of the artform more than ever. Favorites are listed in descending order, with my absolute favorite listed at the bottom!

    About Comic Book Herald:
My name's Dave, and Comic Book Herald is a labor of love designed to help new, lapsed, and curious comic book readers explore and enjoy the wonderful world of comics. I've been developing reading orders, chronology guides, and detailed comics recommendations since late 2011. Comics can be confusing and intimidating; I try to help.

A lot of great picks! I listed my favorites and ended up with way too massive of a list, but here's my top 10:
    1. "One Beautiful Spring Day" by Jim Woodring
    2. "Meskin and Umezo" by Austin English
    3. "A Frog in the Fall" by Linnea Sterte
    4. "Tongues" by Anders Nilsen (issue #5 released this year)
    5. "Detention #2" by Tim Hensley
    6. "Ultrasound" by Conor Stechschulte
    7. "Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands" by Kate Beaton
    8. "Acting Class" by Nick Drnaso
    9. "Secret Life" by Theo Ellsworth and Jeff VanderMeer
    10. "Cankor" by Matthew Allison
My favorite mainstream books of the year would be: Norse Mythology, The Human Target, Crimson Cage, A Righteous Thirst for Vengeance, Do A Powerbomb, Swamp Thing, Usagi Yojimbo, Mindset and Punisher. They don't make my personal top 10, but were all fun additions to my pull list.

Loving the indie picks! I've only read 4 of the 10, so got some reading to do!

  • @LikaLaruku

I love Suprematism art (Bauhaus, Memphis Milano, Kadinsky) so Human Target's coloring is really speaking to me.
High Desert: When I look at the art, the first two things that some to mind are Precedural Arts' "Façade" & "Bobby Hill."

Looking at "Ice Cream Man" I can't help but remember Seanbaby's comics from the golden days of Cracked, plus MTV's 90s adult animation.
Can't disagree with your Marvel picks.
Something about ILATCOTE's art reminds me of Bizenghast, which I never got to finish.

heck yeah gonna check out a bunch of these!
also a huge one for me this year was G. Willow Wilson's poison ivy book! i think it's still going, but the first 6 issues are a really great self contained story!
the art is beautiful and it's a really cathartic exploration of environmental anxiety/defeatism, but done in a way that feels very human and personal!

Just read "It's lonely at the centre of the heart" and it's amazing. The cartooning is soooo good and there are a lot of cool visual quirks. Thank you for the recommendation. Have you read Defenders: Beyond? Haven't seen it in any of your lists but for me is the best Marvel comic of the year

Thanks for the Sabretooth recommendation I read the 5 book series and the 2 exile books which have been out. Outstanding writing by Lavalle, I had to read it 2 or 3 times to understand it completely, so worth it. One of my best reads of the year for sure.
Just finished Catwoman -Lonely city such a well written book, couldn't stop once I started reading, thank you for your list or I would have missed these gems. Next I am starting It's lonely at the centre of the earth.

Can you do this as a semi-annually?? Or maybe round them up when the year ends cuz waiting a whole year for this is such a bummer.. I'm sorta busy and also from a place where they don't sell comicbooks locally, so I read them digitally or IF TPB comes out on amazon (big IF) THANKS 🙂👍🏻

I've only read half of these and would place them in a similar order, though, Immortal X-Men, for me, ranks over Red, ranks over Sabretooth.
You mentioned not reading Tokyo Ghost but I recommend it. It feels like Remender, both good and bad, but it really works in a short 10 issue run.

I loved Nice House until the very end, but the landing is awful. It's a shame cause the series is incredible.
