Always thought roof scoops were some kind of lightweight, roof replacement air induction thing, when AC and fans and all that crap had been taken out for weight savings, so there was moving air and positive pressure inside for hot weather or something. Never really thought much about why they just disappeared.
Some mid or rear engine cars have roof scoops that lead to the engine bay but yeah other than that they just act like an air brake. I believe subaru had a functional roof scoop for one of the wrx rally cars.
Looks like a fun project to sink into. The engine shown in the movie is the Chrysler 420a Dohc that was also used in the neon and it was a front wheel drive just go find a cheap one with the cheap engine and your set.

First time watching your channel. I've been a gearhead since the '60s. American muscle and Japanese tin. You might want to look into JDM. In 2019 I bought a 5.0 engine from a Lexus GFS V8 with the 6-speed transmission with complete wiring harness for $2,200 from JDM. Located a adapter for the trail gear 4.70 twin stick transfer case. Then stuffed it in my 85 Toyota 4x4 straight axle. A friend of mine airbrushed a little sleeping Mojave mule on the tailgate.
This is honestly in better condition than 90% of these eclipses of this era. Yes this car isn't accurate to the movie but I feel that you over exaggerated the condition of the car. The paint and bodywork (for being a fiberglass kit) is really good I feel. This is definitely salvageable, I redid one in worse condition on my channel, on a budget.
@@Rek_Rc I had a 92 Dodge stealth R/T which was pretty hard to find. When you spend so much time and money trying to recreate a screen accurate car, then go to see the actual screen accurate car, and find out it is also not screen accurate? Reminds me of the nightmare people have with The General Lee and K.I.T.T from Knight Rider. Trying to restore these iconic cars with accuracy, when there have been quite a few made over time, is virtually impossible.
The actual movie car is not an actual representation of the car that they are “showing” people get lost in these cars. I personally am a fan of these cars, I just think that people are taking this wayyyyyyyyyy to far! The perfect replica does not exist!
This body kit was actually made by a company called Blitz, although the one on the car was almost certainly a knockoff from Robocar, who made cheap replica body kits in the early 2000s
Original car was not a turbo, it was running the mitsubishi 420A NA 2.0 Liter DOHC, Similar to the the 2.0 DOHC used in the Dodge Neon, many neon owners actually used the 420A to turbo their cars because of the location of the intake and exhaust manifolds. Stock Neon Motors had the intake up front exhaust out back and the 420A reversed that. Both engines shared a lot of parts like cams, sensors, etc.

I love these Eclipses because I had a 1999 as my first car in Highschool. Now by the time I was in Highschool, the car was 10+ years old, but it was still super cool. It had a diamond plate floorboard & a Super Airflow Converter 2 installed. It had mostly cosmetic upgrades like headlights & tail lights, gauge clusters & dash kit. It wasn't much more than stock & most of the "upgrades" were fairly basic, but it was super fast for a 16 year old kid lol. Mine was the front wheel drive turbo, unfortunately not the AWD. As someone that owned a 1997 Eagle Talon that had both door handles break and had to route a wire hangar out the window to open it, and once had to climb through the trunk when that slipped out once...I had flashbacks.
The original car that Universal “rented” from the owner had a roof scoop. It was silver and was well known in the show circuit in the late 90s. I personally saw the car in it’s original form at Import Showoff Invitational at Anaheim convention center. Blitz Japan designed and manufactured their own body kits in the 90s. They were the originators of that side bumper kick up valance look. Robocar was actually a motorsports/accessories shop in LA during the time. VIS racing is who made knock off body kits such as the one on the Eclipse. They offered “Blitz Style” body kits for many imports and some domestics at the time.
Those are $50 eBay "coil overs" real coil overs are threaded struts with proper rate coil springs for the car and cost $1000-$5000 for a set depending on options.
Coilovers is the entire kit including the shocks, springs and purch.but if it's just the purch and springs then it's called sleeve overs because it slides over the shock as is.
Had a 97 Eclipse for quite a few years. Been threw about 4 driver side and 1 passenger side. The last one i greased the springs and hinges prior to installation. Seemed to help. I feel your pain.
Knew someone that had this model and we called it the Zombie Eclipse because it was running on 3 cylinders, leaked all fluids, the body work was trashed (side skirts, bumpers and wing were mangled) but it still ran and picked up speed well enough. He even drove it on freeways which was sketchy at best.

@29:53 The scoop was functional when you deleted the sunroof and custom modified the headliner. It was meant for dry, track racing only(obviously).
Ever think about how Brian lost his floorboard and then picked up Toretto in it, so he would had to put his legs around the gaping hole in the floor while he drove

@Reaniman99 the 666 series cars had a functional roof scoop on the 22b

Adding on hear you added that to the end of your video.

Love the video sir! This is the condition of every DSM I’ve seen for sale in my area for the last 10 years or so. 😢
Happy to see you're doing well, Tom. We miss your videos!!
Try to buy one that's not like that these days. 🤔
Maybe the prices will finally come up then. I picked up 6 2g GST/GSX's last year for 3k, already made my money back of them but I'd like to make flipping DSM's more worth while lol

This car was a Good Try by some amateur kid your being too harsh on the Lad
First time watching your channel. I've been a gearhead since the '60s. American muscle and Japanese tin. You might want to look into JDM. In 2019 I bought a 5.0 engine from a Lexus GFS V8 with the 6-speed transmission with complete wiring harness for $2,200 from JDM. Located a adapter for the trail gear 4.70 twin stick transfer case. Then stuffed it in my 85 Toyota 4x4 straight axle. A friend of mine airbrushed a little sleeping Mojave mule on the tailgate.
Imagine the person who did this build watching this video of their car lmao
They would cry because the body kit cost twice what he bought the car for let alone getting it painted!
@@SKOMPAS PAINTED?
This is honestly in better condition than 90% of these eclipses of this era. Yes this car isn't accurate to the movie but I feel that you over exaggerated the condition of the car. The paint and bodywork (for being a fiberglass kit) is really good I feel. This is definitely salvageable, I redid one in worse condition on my channel, on a budget.
Crazy how Tavarish went from rebuilding a knock off F&F eclipse to a freaking flooded McLaren P1. Dudes a beast

A few months later I saw the guy who bought it at the gas station and whatever he did he actually managed to fix whatever was causing it because I couldnt figure it out nor could the mechanics at the dealership I worked at either.

Right now the big big money is in cars of the wealthier older generations movies. If he waited till we are all 30+ we can dump stupid amounts on these cars. Once I’m out of college I’d gladly put myself into horrific debt for one of these cars.

I still really miss that car.
If I'm ever a rich guy, I will probably go out & fix up an awesome 95-99 Eclipse.

The actual movie car was a fwd Rs with an automatic. There's a documentary on the vehicles vs what was represented in the movie. You nailed it brother
