I'm honestly surprised that there's no crew slot given it's massive size, and in the movies there is a large crew on board. It's probably for balancing reasons but I really wish that option was there.
You don’t disappoint Pat! Thanks for the work you do. I like that they fully committed to bombs with this ship. It’s thematic, and may be cool to fly this flanked with T-70s. Maybe even throw Poe in there too to chase ships around while you have the B/SF-17 slowing creeping towards the enemy squadrons.
+Scott Bailey I'll be so disappointed if it turns out that these things are flying fortresses more than bombers in the movie. I want to see them throwing bombs all over the place!
After playing with them, they are very much dedicated bombers. I run Crimson Leader with Poe Dameron (ps9) and Jess Pava, and I'm rocking bomblet generator. It's not the easiest list to run, in my opinion, but it's fun
Same. If there are not bombs being flung with speed 5 straights, I’m walking out 😆. Austin, that list sounds fun! I’m going to try and make something similar.
The bombs it was carrying were designed to drop that giant ass juggernaut or whatever it was called so when its own bombs blew up inside it it wasn't going to last long haha
I think trajectory simulator might give a bit more life at the u-wing: sabine + simulator + extra munitions + bomb of choice and you have a decent bomber, that has a quite decent agility of 2 and still has a good amount of health, it's interesting also on the b-wing and the ghost, but I think the u-wing might be an overwall better choice, since it has 2 agility instead of 1 (b-wing) and 0 (vcx), it's cheaper than the ghost, and only 2 points more than the b-wing (comparing the cheapest pilots). + has an ept which the ghost doesn't have and also a second crew slot that the b-wing doesn't have, so a quite versatile ship.
For some reason I'm thinking of the World War II US Navy torpedo bomber the TBD Devastator when seeing that model... Doesn't make a lot of sense but that's what comes to mind for me.
It's a 3rd generation ship, hence the Tech slot. Only way Scum players can take Tech right now, although I haven't seen a really exciting build using it yet. The Quadjumper frame is hard to work with IMO, but maybe it just needs to be solved yet.
Rich McGee right right. Just pointing that out because he mentioned only empire and rebel have access to the slot. I know it's because it's in the new trilogy, but it doesn't exactly look like a new ship in the movie. Sand planets are rough though I guess.
Yeah, I was actually about to point that out myself, but you beat me to it. It's a rather odd ship to include in the game given how little screen time it got but let's face it, unless the later movies switch things up some finding 3rd Gen Scum ships is going to be tricky for FFG's designers. Because of that, Tech is going to be very rare in the faction - although maybe we'll see a mechanic to retroactively add a Tech slot to older Scum ships. Maybe as a very low-cost title or modification, or perhaps even a new card type ("Tech Refit"), or maybe tie it to specific pilots as an ability. We haven't (IIRC) seen pilots that add upgrade slots beyond Elite to date, but the design space is there to allow them to add other types. A Scum gearhead/techie type pilot that added a Tech slot on an older ship type would be an interesting idea.
+Ro0ster It's probably a combination of moving my head closer and further from the mic while recording the audio, made more noticeable because I do a lot of editing on these videos to remove long pauses or clean up sections where I may or may not have rambled on for way too log about something. The cuts probably exacerbate the issue somewhat. Believe me though, nobody wants to listen to my rough cuts. Sometimes while I'm editing I'll have to ask myself "what was I even trying to say here?"
The turret primary weapon is meant to represent the turret guns, similar to how the Falcon doesn't get a turret slot. The number of guns on this ship does make me wish that it had three attack dice, though.
Slightly off topic, but do you have any insight into how this ship gets into the recently announced second edition? It's not listed in the rebel conversion kit. Or will we have to wait for a release down the road? Seems like the conversion kit should apply to all existing ships.
Resistance and First Order will be separate factions in second edition, no longer tied to Rebels and Imperials. They have said that the conversion kits for these factions will be part of wave 2, along with I assume new ships to help round them out a little bit (Resistance A-Wing is all but guaranteed).
For pacing purposes I think the bomber in the movie served its purpose, the tension was high especially with Paige. X-Wings and Tie Fighters have always have been depicted as equally easy to destroy for example. This bomber is mainly designed to destroy old imperial holdouts when the New Republic were snuffing out Imperial warlords. So when you look at it from the lense that the bomber is meant to approach right on top of the target and take it out in one fell swoop. I'm sure its true for space stations. Other than that it can be used for loading supplies and is perfect for mercy missions. The type of thing the Resistance had to do at the time. Remember there wasn't any open conflict.
I'm actually a little disappointed, I expected it to have more ordinance and the bomblets be a title or modification instead of taking a bomb slot. Given the number of turrent mounts, and the defensive nature of the guns, something to give the attacker some grief at range 1 would have been thematically cool. Perhaps, 1x per round, a free unmodified turrent attack on attackers at range 1.
It is a turret with 2 attack and the ability to take Accuracy Corrector which means you can roll guaranteed full hits every time you take a shot at anything in a huge radius. I know 2 hit attacks aren't great against a lot of ships, but they can wear down low agility ships pretty well.
I know what you're saying, I was just hoping for something new and thematic. A reflexive attack at close range would be very in line with how a slow bomber would use the turrets. And of course, more bombs. Because the k-wing at this point carries more total munitions and potentially same number of bombs. I understand that there is a general feeling that bomblet generator was too OP, but they missed a chance to do a better version of it, or just include the thing here where it makes sense. And as others pointed out, no crew.
I agree with you - it does seem that gameplay balancing really held back implementation of theme on this ship. I imagine they learned a tough lesson with the Jumpmaster, after having to strip out a bunch of thematic elements via messy FAQ changes. I'm sure they don't want to ever go through that again, so they're erring on the side of caution moving forward. You can see this in the design of the TIE Silencer as well - no Evade action, no Missiles slot, high point cost even on the generic.
You know it’s really obvious that the B-17 theme was a deliberate thing by FFG. I seriously want three of these in formation just for shits and giggles. Hopefully getting this one for Xmas!
Insightful review as always. This is a good looking ship. with thematic cards. will be interesting to see i fits played much on youtube so far there's one video I haven't watched. too bad they didn't fly in the move like in a staggered formation Crossfire Formation card art. the one blown up TIE rammed thru three in a row. they didn't seem to get hit that much so their stats must've been 3 hull 1 shield lol I thought it looked like they were dropping thermal detonators in the movie like the card art. MTFBWY
Yes. Probably a case of Lucasfilm not giving the X-Wing designers any pilot names to work with (since these ships would have been in testing and production prior to The Last Jedi being in theaters. Hopefully they will rectify this issue with the second edition release of the Resistance faction.
I like to think the Trajectory simulator was a response to their weird only fires down design from the movie. Honestly I like the design, I just hate how bad the movie made them/their pilots look (if the bombs only go down just tilt the nose up!), and it looks like they work here how you'd expect, not fast but hard hitting and fairly tough unlike the glass cannons they were in the film.
Yeah, and apparently it's not even the canon name of the ship. Wouldn't surprise me if Disney/Lucasfilm didn't give the actual name to FFG. To be fair they might not have had the finalized name ready when FFG needed to go to production. I guess it's called a StarFortress.
I have to say I'm very disappointed but there is no crew slot on board this ship has fantasy Flight even seen the movie there's like 6 people this thing 2 pilots 2 gunners and a couple of people running around. Very missed opportunity. I'd rather has Sabine inside of the h6 bomber then take this
+ThroatSore Try hitting a TIE Silencer outfitted with Push the Limit and Advanced Sensors and flown by someone who knows what they're doing. Unless you're moving after it (and most bombers like low PS for the early move/drop bombs options) you're unlikely to ever hit it.
I'm honestly surprised that there's no crew slot given it's massive size, and in the movies there is a large crew on board. It's probably for balancing reasons but I really wish that option was there.
I agree. Must be for game balance but it is weird that the only dedicated bomber in the game can't take Bombardier...
Best X-wing reviews here. Keep it that way Cardboard Dungeon Keeper!
+Dagobert Thank you

You will not be disappointed then :)
B17 ehh? Might get one and do a WW2 repaint.
blitzkrieg2142k I was thinking the same thing XD
This dose a very good job of reflecting it's role and ability in the movie.
9 Hull is 6 Hull more than the ship should have if you want it to be accurate to canon.
Yeah they did explode pretty quickly.
The bombs it was carrying were designed to drop that giant ass juggernaut or whatever it was called so when its own bombs blew up inside it it wasn't going to last long haha
Get some serious Nebulon-B vibes from this one too with that large “sail” on its under side.
+Drunken_Jedi Very true. It does have some Nebulon-B design similarities for sure.
How about a nice RESISTANCE build set soon?
It’s a what now? Resistance bammer?
+Thomas Donohoe Yep. Resistance Bammer. It draps bams.
The Cardboard Dungeon 😂
Your accent is so strong... haha. Bums..

+gabriel tessio That's a good point. Maybe the U-Wing will see some play.
For some reason I'm thinking of the World War II US Navy torpedo bomber the TBD Devastator when seeing that model... Doesn't make a lot of sense but that's what comes to mind for me.
It definitely has strong WWII bomber influences.
The Quadjumper has a tech slot too! For some odd reason.

Great review with some good insight. Ty! What's with the volume fluctuations in the video though? Editing?

No turret upgrade slot on a ship with multiple massive turrets...

Too bad the movie version of this ship wasn't the monster this thing is!

Come on ladies, let's get in formation.

MTFBWY
baambs
They should have added roses sister

Why have A bomb when you can have ALL the bombs!
I like to think the Trajectory simulator was a response to their weird only fires down design from the movie. Design-wise it's the unholy love child of a B-wing and a Nebulon B frigate!
I was thinking the same thing and just as slow ; MTFBWY
If not slower!!!
And yes, not enough primary weapon.
Yes! Bomber review
It really is a pity that it can't take an astromech........especially an R2 unit.
Love this content drop :)
+IMMentat It's Star Wars Week! I'm pumped!
Amazing as always XD
Woo this looks awsome
Hey man I like your reviews. I'd like your opinion on mine too!
This is a 💯 Baamber. It drops baambs and not much else
B/SF-17. Take out the "SF" and you have B-17...lol
Yeah, and apparently it's not even the canon name of the ship. Wouldn't surprise me if Disney/Lucasfilm didn't give the actual name to FFG. To be fair they might not have had the finalized name ready when FFG needed to go to production. I guess it's called a StarFortress.
They should really alter the style of the ship. It's very different from the movie.
+Joshua Van Tassell Is it? I thought it looked pretty close.
The Cardboard Dungeon Ehh, This model doesn't look much larger than the other models, like the movie. It looks similar, but it should be larger.
I'm a fighter not a bomber oh well
Awesome
Am I the only one who call this ship T-Wing?
At least they gave it its’ real name for Second Edition. Star Fortress is cooler than B/SF-17.
I have to say I'm very disappointed but there is no crew slot on board this ship has fantasy Flight even seen the movie there's like 6 people this thing 2 pilots 2 gunners and a couple of people running around. Very missed opportunity. I'd rather has Sabine inside of the h6 bomber then take this
Having a cheap durable bomber with Sabine is probably why they didn't include a crew icon. Sometimes gameplay needs to supercede attention to detail.
The Cardboard Dungeon I guess you're right but also having her launching bombs halfway across the board with make it a bit overpowered
The Cardboard Dungeon view from the UK or the US
*baamber*
It draps bams 😂
Meh. I don't really like bombers. The B wing is the only bomber is like.
bombs and auto damage is bullshit and ruins the game.
+fuzztsimmers 3 Nah, it's just something that you need to plan for when building your squadrons. There are ways to deal with bombers.
Sadly, bombs are just too much, just like torps. No cool fighter combat any more. Just slamming about dropping bombs. Pity.
+ThroatSore Try hitting a TIE Silencer outfitted with Push the Limit and Advanced Sensors and flown by someone who knows what they're doing. Unless you're moving after it (and most bombers like low PS for the early move/drop bombs options) you're unlikely to ever hit it.
Ha.
The Cardboard Dungeon well I guess we'll see whats winning next year in Tournament.
