Once upon a time, Zeus, the King of the Gods, was having an affair with the goddess of the harvest, Demeter. They conceived a beautiful goddess named Persephone, who was loved by all for her lighthearted kindness. Demeter was very protective of her daughter, keeping her naive to the ways of the world and dressing her as a child, even as she grew into a women. She meant to keep her innocent and virginal forever, always by her mother’s side.
One day Hades, the God of the Underworld, happened to glance up at the world above and noticed Persephone playing with a group of nymphs in her fields. Now, the underworld was a dark, isolated place, and since it was Hades’ job to judge the souls of all the dead, there was so much work to be done and he hardly ever was able to see his family up above. The other gods had grown to fear him, and the mortals hardly dared to utter his name. Hades was a just god, but he grew lonely and cold as he carried out his duties over the centuries. But as he observed Persephone, he was struck immediately by her beauty and her tenderness towards the nymphs. He ended up going back to watch her every so often, feeling his old heart soften each time. Finally he roused himself to go to Olympus and ask Zeus for Persephone’s hand in marriage. Zeus was pleased with this turn of events: Hades was the richest and most stable of all the Gods, not to mention powerful. He gave his consent to the marriage. However, Hades knew Demeter would never allow the union, so he decided to spirit Persephone away.
One day when Persephone was alone in her fields, the ground suddenly split open, and out sprung a huge chariot being pulled by black horses. Hades leaned over the side and scooped Persephone up, and before the girl could even scream, plunged back into the earth. Demeter quickly noticed her daughter was gone and searched frantically for help. Eventually she found a farmer who had witnessed all of it, and Demeter grew livid, vowing that the ground would never produce a stalk of wheat until Persephone was returned.
Down in the Underworld, Persephone was distraught. Hades was kind to her and showered her with gifts, but she missed her mother and the world above. Hades was saddened, but he was also patient. He put Persephone’s thrown right next to his and, unlike the other Gods, allowed her equal rule along side him. He treated her not as property, but as someone who could eventually become a friend. When Persephone suggested that another realm be made for the best mortal souls to go to, Hades made it for her. It was called Elysium-the Underworld’s heaven. Persephone felt conflicted. She missed her mother, but Hades was the only person who’d ever treated like an adult. She was beginning to fall in love with him.
One morning Persephone went into the Underworld’s garden, and was offered a pomegranate by the gardener. Up until that point, Persephone had resisted eating anything offered to her-she knew that if she ate any food from the Underworld, she would be bound to it forever. But that morning, Persephone was so hungry, she took the pomegranate and ate six of its seeds. Then abruptly, Hermes, the messenger of the Gods, appeared before her. He told her that Demeter had caused the earth to freeze, and that no crops would grow. Mortals were dying in droves, and the only thing that would stop her was Persephone’s return. Persephone reluctantly allowed Hermes to take her to Olympus, where Zeus and Demeter were having it out. Zeus had promised his daughter to Hades without her consent, after all.
Persephone tried to convince Demeter that she was all right and that Hades had been kind to her, but Demeter insisted that she had to come home, or else she would let every mortal on earth die of famine. Suddenly the throne room darkened and the Gods turned as Hades stepped out of the shadows. He was holding the partially eaten pomegranate in his hand.
“Persephone has eaten the fruit of the Underworld,” Hades said cooly, “she must return and rule it with me.”
While Demeter resumed her tantrum, Zeus considered Persephone quietly.
“How many seeds did you eat, daughter?” he asked.
Persephone told him, “Six.” Zeus stood up from his throne and the assembly quieted.
“Since Persephone has eaten six seeds of the pomegranate, I rule that she will spend six months of each year in the Underworld with her husband, and six months tending to the mortal’s fields with her mother.”
Neither Demeter nor Hades were completely happy with this agreement, but Zeus had made it so. Every year Persephone returned to the fields and restored them with Demeter, and when the time came, Hades would come to her and escort her to her throne in the Underworld. Each time she left, Demeter mourned and all vegetation died. and each time Persephone returned, the earth warmed and became fertile once again. This is how the Greeks explained the earth’s seasons, and how a goddess of life fell in love with the Underworld.( ◜‿◝ )♡

This is a really nice retelling ❤
But I love this version even more:
One day, when Persephone was playing with the nymphs in her mother's fields, she happened upon an entrance to the underworld. In her childlike curiosity, she wandered inside, exploring the realm unknown to her. Sensing her presence, Hades went to meet her. He was instantly enamored with her joy and beauty and let her stay as his guest. Persephone grew to like him and the God of the Dead went to Zeus after only a short while to ask for her hand in marriage.
Persephone, although she was falling in love with Hades, soon became uncomfortable as Queen of the Underworld, as she missed her mother and the life of the world above. So Hades showered her in affection and gifts, creating Elysium for her. But Persephone only found comfort in his garden, where the plants grew without light, creating a beautifully haunting scenery. There, a gardener offered her a pomegranate. Persephone hesitated, knowing she had to stay if she ate from the seeds. But she had not eaten since she arrived, so she ate six of the seeds before Hermes appeared, informing her of her mother's wrath.

    Lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
Yes my love, I confess to you
I am only here to break your heart in two
The very flower you chose that day
Its only task was to decay
    You see?
    [Verse 2]
When I watched your first bathing
I only warned you with a lowered voice
"Be wary of my river's undertow
It flows with water from the coldest source"
    Did you hear?
    [Chorus]
    And then I made sure
    You would always return
    You still know of dawn
    But you always return
    [Verse 3]
When you hid under my black wings
They couldn't have protected you from anything
Once in flight they would have let go
You would have once again wound up below
    Only broken
    [Verse 4]
Indeed, it's wrong to keep you near me
One could call me cruel and deceiving
But in your sacred air I am full of light
Your loving arms are the true delight
    To which I'm lost
    [Chorus]
    And you've noticed it
    There is something right here
You have come to love, yes you've come to love
    What you always will fear
    [Bridge]
    (Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)
    [Verse 5]
Yes, my love, I confess to you
I've nothing but the means to break your heart in two
My part in yours may seem important now
But with every spring it will seem so small
Just for now I am your fall
    I am your fall
    I am your fall

It's fascinating how many different ways this story has been told.
I've heard it as Persephone being a victim; kidnapped, forced to starve herself, and then tricked into staying by a ghost child who offers her the pomegranate but doesn't tell her she would be cursed to stay.
I've heard it as Persephone being kidnapped by Hades, but being treated so well she falls for him and eats the seeds willingly. (As my dad said, it's a wonderful love story)
I've even heard it as Persephone walking willingly into Hades and deciding to stay.
I wonder if the reason it changed is because women are tired of being "victims", and want to decide for themselves where their heavens are.
I wonder if even the gods forget which story really happened.

Hades is one of the most misunderstood characters in Greek mythology. Hades was the only Greek god who loved sincerely. The god who was forced to live a life that he himself detested until he met Persephone. His story is the story of a misunderstood sad soul who was looking for happiness and love. For there are numerous versions in which Persephone sincerely loved him and freely chose to live in the underworld by his side.

Agreed but this is also an accurate rep of Hades according to mythos. The flower was part of the gifts she needed to accept to wed him. She picked the flower, accepting courtship unknowingly, then she accepted the seeds, accepting marriage yet again not knowing. Ik there was one more thing she accepted but i dont remember atm but from a Hades perspective it was less "im kidnapping u bc im a king and i can" but more a "i really like u and this is how ill make u mine" type thing. Whereas for Persephone its "i picked a flower like i always do and he abducted me, then he got me to eat some stupid seeds, NOW we're married" bc thats one of the main ways marraige happened back then, or engagements rather. LO gives Perse WAY more agency than she actually had in their marraige, tho i do like the comic.

For me it's loving someone but never getting this love back from them. You are trapped, in a rather dark place you know, you aren't home there, but you know this place, and still feel a comfort. The other person is in the sun, free to go wherever it pleases them. If you would get a chance, you easily can destroy them. You can't win either way.

the version i have of hades and persephone in my head is actually from what i've heard an uncommon one. for me, hades is very quiet. almost cowardly. he's cold to the touch, very cold, and calm. surprisingly merciful. sometimes he has to whisper some words to hold his wife back from going a bit too far, because she gets carried away sometimes. she's powerful. she took her place as the queen of the underworld and finally felt like herself. she's sadistic, really. sweet and confident but sadistic. there's a certain sharpness in her eye to pair with the soft glow in hades'. they are every bit the power couple. she determines some of the punishments, she deals with things at face value, while hades simply takes a step back. although he runs the show in private, she is the face of the necropolis. she is fond of the limelight in a way he certainly isn't. he's always there, softly smiling in the shadows, his hand in hers, or on her shoulder, her waist, or in her hair. he is silent. he is soft. he is smiling. and she is the star. they are the ultimate couple, and they balance each other out. the sexual tension is permanently, clearly, always _tangible_

That actually is close to the true Greek Mythology version. People changed it to fit the more patriarchal and Christian views, which is where we get the version we know the most of. But, in Ancient Greece, no one was to say Kore's name lest she turn her rage on them. It was worse to say her name than Hades. That is why we call her Persephone or Kore, most likely, neither is her true name. The Destroyer or the Girl, both names are just descriptors. This is similar to Hades, as he could be called such to reference the underworld and that wasn't his true name.
In the original myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, some versions have Persephone as the one to be against Orpheus leaving with his wife and it is in turn Hades who convinced his wife.
The only main difference is that in original Mythology, he isn't cowardly. He is just calm, kinda? Collected. He is more merciful than Persephone, unless someone threatens her. He deals with Theasus and Pratrolius (I believe) when Theasus desires to steal Persephone away. Some even like to say Hades did what he did to keep them from feeling Persephone's full wraith.
Think of Eros and Psyche's myth. Persephone straight up just sends a box of death to Aphrodite. If Psyche wouldn't have been tempted, the goddess of beauty would have been killed.
When she hears Hades has a mistress, she pulls a Hera and turns Minthe into a Mint plant. When really examined, Persephone earns her name as the Destroyer.
I could write an entire dissertation on Persephone and the mythological surrounding her lol.

    lyrics
Yes my love, I confess to you
I am only here to break your heart in two
The very flower you chose that day
Its only task was to decay
    You see?
When I watched your first bathing
I only warned you with a lowered voice
"Be wary of my river's undertow
It flows with water from the coldest source"
    Did you hear?
    And then I made sure
    You would always return
    You still know of dawn
    But you always return
When you hid under my black wings
They couldn't have protected you from anything
Once in flight they would have let go
You would have once again wound up below
    Only broken
Indeed, it's wrong to keep you near me
One could call me cruel and deceiving
But in your sacred air I am full of light
Your loving arms are the true delight
    To which I'm lost
    And you've noticed it
    There is something right here
You have come to love, yes you've come to love
    What you always will fear
Yes, my love, I confess to you
I've nothing but the means to break your heart in two
My part in yours may seem important now
But with every spring it will seem so small
Just for now I am your fall
    I am your fall
    I am your fall.

Persephone (aka Kore) was the Greek goddess of vegetation, especially grain, and the wife of Hades, with whom she rules the Underworld. An important element of the Eleusinian Mysteries and the Thesmophoria festival, the goddess was worshipped throughout the Greek world and frequently appeared in all forms of Greek art.

    'Letters from Persephone'-
    By Natalie Wee
    "I wasn't afraid, mama;
I was bored, I was hungry.
Do you know how long I waited
for that fruit? Me in the fields,
The sunlight on my hair, a crown,
    sweat on my palms glittering
    like starbursts carved in marble,
    teeth sharp as Athena's sword.
He took one look at me
    and broke the Earth open
    for desire.
And, all that time, you thought
    golden-armoured braggarts
    could storm my heart into
    surrender. Oh, mama.
What did I care to be a bride,
    when I could be queen?
    I wasn't afraid, mama;
    I wasn't taken. I left.
    If only you knew
    how his hair is softest
    when he's on his knees,
    coaxing Spring
    from inside of me."
