The Constable episode is one of the show's finest....Compelling, nail biting to the end, with the perfect ending not only for the owner's trust in Philip, but the vindication of that young art dealer who already knew his craft but didn't quite believe in himself at that time.

Love this show. As a Portrait painter, who studied at a top art school, and whose family was involved in the art world as dealers for 50 + years.... My 10 second reaction to the Tom Roberts , was it's REAL, late 19th century, a very fine piece of work, and it's a self portrait, look at the long skinny legs. (as his grand daughter confirms 2/3rds of the way through.). I find it amazing that the Australian art authority could say "well it looks like any young man from the late 1800's"...??? poppycock !" I also find the quality of the figure and face extraordinarily great ! I have a very high batting average for guessing the outcomes on this series. I must admit I doubted the Constable but I had never seen his rough sketches before. Wonderful content and very well researched.

What an amazingly entertaining show this is. Fiona and Philip have kept me up way past my bedtime for several nights now. I often say that I'm not really a person that 'binge-watches' TV shows when asked, but now I will have to confess that I'm completely obsessed with Fake Or Fortune and simply can't get enough. Riveting and educational, so glad I found this great program. Thank you to all that are involved in producing it. Please keep going.

Jeepers, the emotion depicted in the Tom Roberts painting is emblematic of emotions Joe must be experiencing going through his trials and tribulations while working so hard only to lose so much. I can see why he was so drawn to it. I'm so glad he hung in there; it was meant for him. I'm so happy for them. I'm so happy for Joe. I almost wish that he could keep that painting but I feel it has served its purpose for him by allowing him to put that chapter of his life to bed and move forward with the means to provide for his family. Who knows, maybe Tom Roberts's spirit presided over that auction and sent that painting Joe's way. I know if I were the artist I'd surely want to see it go to him.

Tom Roberts' sketch book provided the bulk of evidence, esp given that there are no official records for the painting. A forger would not have had access to the sketch books and so would not have known about the composition.

I was a odd child while most ten year olds were saving money to purchase a bicycle, i saved for a drawing. I'm so glad now that all the artwork I ever purchased, I would write a letter of when and where I purchased it with the receipt attached to a envelope on the back. I met my life partner at thier art exhibit where I commisioned a piece from them. I purchased many, many pieces over the years and had many commissions I paid always giving each artist the same exact instructions of a rough idea that i wanted painted always the same subject. Now behind my desk and surrounding my office walls is a scene depicted by around 175 artists in thier own interpretations. I also made sure that they never saw my collection before hand, amazing enough there is no two that are the same all distinct differences, I even have several sculptures of the same scene, even jewelry and for when I'm gone a memorial form of graveyard sculpture. I have been extremely lucky that I was able to purchase many before they were famous, or known artists.

A chemical analysis of the paint used from the back of the painting along with that a of a known painting of Tom Robert's would be a legitimate analysis, and about a 100% confirmation of legitimacy of the painting, as artists back then generally mixed their own paints from pigments, and oils.
Their Robert's painting has all the hallmarks of his work and is a beautiful painting.
A very good investment. I doubt there was someone that long ago who would've been copying his works.
    Well done.

Wait, so who took off the extra coat of paint on the Constable? Old lady Battson? Her husband? Because the 1950s sale catalog of the painting showed that tree in full bloom, and then the real painting had all of that stripped away. Is that the reason the experts in the 1990s sale of the estate thought it was a fake Constable? Why did the Battsons not have any records of this stripping away of paint? Was it an art conservator in California who did this? It would’ve been nice if this bit of the mystery had been filled out. Instead I’m left here guessing about a rather important part of the provenance trail.
As for young Philip Mould in the 1990s, trying to prove this was a real Constable? He didn’t have access to those two sketches that proved the painting was the real deal. One was buried in a private art collection Philip had no idea existed (the present owner dug that one up) and the other was in some random museum in the south of France. He was only able to view that sketch because he got a fine digital copy of it. In the 1990s this was not possible.
