Foxes are actually pretty vocal. Many people hear them from time to time not knowing what the sound is. It's an almost human sounding "WHaaaaaaP!" but don't take my word for it. Look it up.
What it sounds like to me, and the way others have described it as sounding, is like a woman screaming in the forest, like she's being chased by Jason Voorhees.
