As a metal and a blackpink fan I have this to say: the original isnt their best song. it has weird structural decisions that didn't change the mold they established for themselves years ago.
Leo fucking fixed that
my fav songs covered by leo are the ones in which his production style can shine through the original (korn-esque scat on Rolling in the deep? weird whistle in Money Money Money? HECC YEA)
here, he managed to change the song enough to fix its weird structure: having an orchestral intro with a melody that doesnt show up anymore, weird spacing in the chorus, weird ass onomatopoeia everywhere (which is a YG special)
BUT he didnt made a new song on top of it. he kept the song's identity, with a new take on it.
the sitar is great. gives eastern flavor and takes huge advantage of the scale used on lisa's rap (second verse)
the playful/satirical usage of autotune to enhance the bits of the song that needed the extra bump (in kpop melodic prechorus are kind of a staple)
the solo in the verse scale and harmony, holy jesus
the changed lyrics from "blackpink in your area" to "frogleap in your area" and "bring out your boss bitch" (which is a terrible line) to "bring out the mosh pit" WHICH MAKES TOTAL SENSE IN A METAL SONG were amazing, plus the extra scat
and the payoff to the intro by repeating it as an outro
blackpink does have great songs (kill this love, playing with fire), but this comeback was... mediocre.
leo added enough to make it great, as a masterful producer would.
When this song originally came out i was disappointed and sad, wondering how much the kpop industry limits its artists and how poor money-making decisions influence in the artistic expression of girls that have it in them to be good artists.
Leo, who wasnt known as a kpop-cover man, pops out of nowhere, saving this song.

If I'm not wrong, there are kpop (mostly with k-groups & solo singers etc like they are the popular one), k-hiphop, k-metal/rock like this, and etc. Korean music has metal/rock in their own but kinda underrated
