Hello Sandra, i've been completely lost with no direction and have really dug deep into my thoughts on what I want to pursue and love the idea of Cybersecurity. I have no degree and no experience in tech or cyber but plan on exploring my options to get my foot in the door. What advice could you provide as far as steps for someone like me :) Thank you for the informative video!
Hi, I'm not Sandra but I saw this and thought I'd respond. You should know if you want to be on the blue team or the red team. But since you've never been in tech, you want to be sure that your knowledge of computers and networks is great. You can check out the comptia a+ and network+ certs to give you the solid foundation you need; you don't have to take the exams but the knowledge really helps. You want to read for these certs as if you're going to take the exams. Then take the security+, that's a good foundation for cyber professionals.
Also, check out your state department of labor site and career services. The White House initiative included announcements of grants for people who want to work in cybersecurity- you might not need to pay anything for a bootcamp
You should try getting a beginner certification in cyber, a good one is Comptia Security+ but i have a video on beginner certs here for more options: Best Cyber Security Certifications For Beginners | Best Entry Level IT Certifications & What to know ruclips.net/video/vgBQV7jDTsE/видео.html - and then try to get free pentesting experience on Hackthebox/Tryhackme/DVWA/etc! Goodluck with everything! :)

Hey, thanks for the suggestion! :) i’ll def look into this topic since i’m also a huge fan of the data science/ML world. There are many cyber security startups i’ve seen but many of them have experience in the field and see the gaps and areas that companies need third parties for, i would start with consulting if you’re trying to start a cyber business bc it gives you insight into what companies want in terms of security and how you can make their environment more secure
I don't have help desk experience but many people Ik do, but i even know people in cyber security w a psychology background since a lot of it is dealing with people hacking, if you're starting from the very beginning, a help desk role might be an easy first job to get your feet wet while you study for a cert or two to get into other cyber security jobs, good luck Felix!
Great video! Would I be wasting my time going through a bootcamp for a Security+ certification, without any degrees? Are there any entry level positions where a degree isn’t required?
Hey thanks for watching :)! You should look into the year up program, they have partnerships with big companies that want to hire diverse background candidates with a ged/hs or associates, a security+ would be a huge cherry on top if you get into that program, good luck !!
No, you’re not wasting your time. I’m doing a boot camp for the project and hands on experience. If you’re a hands on learner or need external motivation then boot camps are great. I’m working on my CompTIA certifications too. It’s good knowledge and looks good for job applications/interviews.
I'm finishing my diploma in computer systems technology, I just got accepted for a graduate certificate program at Seneca for cybersecurity & threat management, I'm so hyped, my question, do you think a diploma program and a cybersecurity postgrad would land me a good job, would it be equivalent to a CISSP? I'm trying to work towards sys admin, SOC analyst role
Is the grad certification program similar to a masters? I think certs like CISSP do well because many recruiters are told to look for that certification while they’re scanning through resumes which helps them get their foot in the door easier. Your degree and grad cert program can definitely make you qualified for a cyber role but just make sure you write your resume in a way that those resume scanning tools they use will pick up on the right keywords!
Aw thanks 🥺 i try to think about things positively but at one point want to work abroad so hopefully can still do something security/tech related there lol

Hi, I'm currently in the process of college applications. I'm having a struggle deciding between majoring in bio vs cyber security. If I went down the cyber security path, would you reccomend I major in cyber security? Would that set me up for success within the field? Thanks.
I know the question is directed towards her but I just wanted to put in my input in case it helps. It depends what you want to do with that bio degree. I was majoring in astrophysics until recently when my priorities changed. If you're planning on doing research with bio you might not be getting paid as much as your degree is worth. That is why I didnt want to pursue astrophysics even though I've been going to school for it. Its competitive and a bachelor's does not pay as much as I would like, heck my current job pays more. Hi Yashika, thanks for your question! I think these are both great options but I think you'll at most need a bachelor's degree for Cyber security entry level roles so i don't think an MBA would be necessary yet, unless you already have experience in cyber security and are looking towards a more senior/management position. I'd stick with the option that is the best financial choice but still has a competitive cyber security program that teaches real skills, good luck with your decision! :)
Bachelors in Cyber security, Information technology, or Computer science would be perfect! They each have a courses differences so pick the major that resonates most with you, good luck! :)
Which major is best for undergraduate student computer science BSc Hons or computer science (cyber security), BSc Hons I don't have much experience in neither of'em so what would u suggest :) Plz reply 🙏
Hi Larisa! I've heard of it but haven't looked into it too much, it looks like a good program from just the website but i would really want to look at a bootcamp with corporate partners so you know they have companies working with them or that directly hire from the bootcamp program, good luck Larisa! @@WithSandra Hi Sandra, I wanted to follow up on my previous comment. Thank you for taking the time to respond. After looking more into the program I entered I came across this info: To get you to this point, Fullstack Cyber Bootcamp leads you through a five-part curriculum covering Foundations (AWS basics, Linux Command Line, Computing and Networking Concepts), Security Essentials (Data Encoding, Basic Cryptography, Networking and HTTP, System Administration, Security Concepts), Red Team (Ethical Hacking, Penetration Testing Methodology, Attack Types, OWASP Top 10), and Blue Team (Threat Modeling, Aws Best Security Practices + Tools, Firewalls, System Hardening, Identity and Access Management, Log Hunting, Splunk, Incident Response). Last, you’ll complete a Final Project, which will be a powerful tool as you apply for your first role. Do you have any recommendations on any certificates I should look into before this?
I dont have a laptop brand preference since my company actually assigned me a laptop 😅 but i would definitely want 16gb ram preferably DDR4, intel i7, and your ssd anything over 256gb!
Actually!! If this is for school (which i didnt read at first lol) i’d go the refurbished route, and focus on 8 gb ram and at least i5, that’ll be much better for your budget, the storage is more flexible if you’re in school too since you’ll probably get a laptop from your employer when you graduate! I had a refurbished lenovo thinkpad in college and ik the dell xps is a good choice too, good luck w everything! :)

I got a bach in Psychology and now doing Software Eng Masters, so Cybersec makes the most sense for me, I think
Which degree would you recommend for this career path
Bachelors in Cyber security, Information technology, or Computer science would be perfect! They each have a courses differences so pick the major that resonates most with you, good luck! :)
Which major is best for undergraduate student computer science BSc Hons or computer science (cyber security), BSc Hons
I don't have much experience in neither of'em so what would u suggest :)
Plz reply 🙏

Have you heard of full stack academy cyber security bootcamp?
Hi Larisa! I've heard of it but haven't looked into it too much, it looks like a good program from just the website but i would really want to look at a bootcamp with corporate partners so you know they have companies working with them or that directly hire from the bootcamp program, good luck Larisa! Keep me updated :)

Hi Sandra, I wanted to follow up on my previous comment.
Do you have any recommendations on any certificates I should look into before this?
im going to school for cyber security analysis, i was wondering what is the best laptop to use?
Great Content but,

Hey Sandra how much can you expect to make with security plus certification in an entry level salary?
Based on comptia security+ FAQ www.comptia.org/faq/security/how-much-can-i-make-with-a-comptia-security-certification the median income is $81,100 but it definitely varies a lot from state/company! They show the 25th-90th percentile of salary too
