London transport country buses 1950's Lovely 1950s film championing the use of London Transport's country bus service and Green Lane public transport. Film follows several routes connecting the districts, towns and villages on the outskirts of the capital on the London Country South West network. Lots of idyllic old England locations.
Public transport montage introduces the subject of the film - A London Underground train approaches the camera on part of the line which is outside. Creative fade to another tube train moving towards the camera in a more rural area. Fade to a single decker bus. Fade to a double decker bus approaching the camera. And another on street of terraced houses. Sunny shot of a field of wheat blowing in the breeze - we're in the countryside. Fade to another picturesque, sweeping view of the English countryside, rural England. Fade to a large Arts and Crafts style country house. Fade to a village street with a timber framed building and other historic buildings, a single decker London Transport bus drives out of the village and towards the camera. Point of view from the inside of the top deck of a bus looking out of the front window and the fields passing by.
Another single deck Green Lane bus passes the camera on a busy street approaching Hyde Park Corner in London. In a leafy suburb, a woman leaves her bungalow and walks out onto the pavement, shot from inside the bus, we follow her down the street. At the bus stop, a 405 to West Croydon double decker bus stops and she gets on. Outside a large house with a stone porch, a smartly dressed woman with her shopping basket and handbag walks down the front steps. On the main road, we see a bus approaching, the camera moves right and the same woman is sitting on a wall nearby waiting for the bus with another woman and her child, they get up and walk towards the bus. A London Transport sign, camera moves down to the left to view the bus station as the same bus pulls up at the bus shelters, there are lots of travellers waiting to get on, the smart woman alighs and walks away from the vehicle. Close up on her shopping basket as a shop assistant places an item she has just bought into it, the camera moves up to a wider view of the woman shopping and the shop keeper helping her, she walks away down the street.
A Victorian looking school building with school children running around a central courtyard garden. Outside, a double decker bus pulls up and a stream of children leaving the school gates jump on. Elevated view of fa factory complex as factory workers leave for the day, the camera moves right over the rooftops and looks towards the nearby road on which they will catch their buses home. Camera moves across the fronts of three stationary buses with 'Special Service' signs on them. Passengers getting onto the back of a bus. At a bus station, a large crowd of passengers are walking away from five parked buses, the camera follows them as they get on another bus with a 'Black and White Scotch Whisky' advert across the side and 'London Transport' below. Fade to elevated view of a very busy market day scene, with animal transport vans and parked parked, pens and farm animals, shoppers, market stalls and shops.
A rural road sign pointing to Hemel Hempstead, St Albans and Whipsnade in one direction and Watford and London in the other, a man on a horse drawn cart approaches in the junction in background. An Enfield road sign with three panels directing traffic to Windmill Hill and Potter's Bar on one side, and Church Street and Chingford on the other. A woman sits in a grassy field admiring the rural landscape in the distance, judging by the sign posts in the previous shots this is probably Kent...
Huntley Film Archives is a film library holding tens of thousands of films. The large majority of the films are documentaries. Films cover a wide range of subjects and production dates range from the 1890’s to the 2020’s. As with all libraries we make no judgement on the content of our holdings and make them available for educational purposes for all to see. Films may have content or express opinions some may think inappropriate or offensive, but it is not the work of a library to censor educational resources. Films should be viewed with historical objectivity and within a context relevant to the times in which they were produced
