When I migrated to this country I was fascinated (I was seven years old) by all the rag and bone men and their horses that always wore blinkers; i thought London was wonderful.

I was friendly with Freddie who was Alf's brother also Bernard Raftery who commented below and Gerald and Dennis McMahon who lived at number 9. Alf bet me £2 that I couldn't drink 8 pints of Draught Double Diamond in 2 hours. I did it in 11/2 but don't remember much else and had to miss school the next day. This was in The Duke of Edinburgh in Fonthill Road and I was about 16 - 17. Alf's dad used to recite a poem about Dangerous Dan McGrew.
