Since he has a lot of Dad Rock influences he’s kind of helped make it more hip and cool. Has enough cred that our kids will dig him like we dig stuff from the past too, I reckon
Many people would argue the opposite haha. But i do enjoy his music quite a lot. I don't know about the indie-acts that follow though. Haven't listened that much to them.
Steve VC Mac also inspired a bunch of shitty rip-offs, too. He’s still my favorite artist, but I don’t think he really had a “positive” effect on music
No comment's about the sound of the guitar ? He has an incredible use of effects and that makes his sounds instantly recognisable. He uses always the same guitar and it's a shitty guitar he bought for 10 bucks
Lie Likes Music the way you pronounced the word "Opera" with your accent made it sound like "Oprah". The famous daytime tv host. So I heard "Oprah singer" and it's a funny thought. Respect man. no worries. 👍
u forget about the whole slacker culture, tht's essential to understand how it appeals to our fasterdriven generation I find the most interesting part to be the honestity during his live shows and how serious he' s about his musicianship, finding that balance it's something that I would like to see/do moreoften superb job btw
Mac DeMarco... The king who started the whole bittersweet indie study music/bedroom pop music vibe that sad, lovelorn teenagers now listen to... Clairo, Cuco, King Krule, Rex Orange County, Still Woozy...
I've always found the melodies in his music to be striking, particularly on guitar. They're simple, yet really impactful. "Blue Boy" is one of my favorites because the melody is happy, but also mysterious and nostalgic in a way.
I'd agree with the comments you made on lyrical content in his songs wholeheartedly. (honestly I agree with most of it and I think this is a great video). But, the lyrics stick out to me in his music. Interestingly enough, I think the low resolution in his music videos, his cheap guitar, and his use of analog recording equipment conjure up a similar feeling to the lyrics. While they might seem unrelated, both the emotional depth and the "mistakes" and "imperfections" in his songs give his music a gorgeous and unbelievably human quality. It speaks to us in a way that is part nostalgia and part raw emotion. (Just to be clear here before I say this last little bit, I'm not against technology or innovation. I think both are great etc. etc. etc.) Mac's music has a quality of purity to it. As humans, we have a bias towards all that which is natural. Mac's music perfectly embodies the "natural" that we all are searching for. Untouched by technology, he can create something free of the system we all feel trapped in.
Well his guitar and tape-machine are pieces of technology too though. But i totally get what you're refering to here. I think his voice, lyrics and playing style boils down to his mindset about music. It doesn't need to be perfect. As long as you play and have fun, that is what matters. He embodies the sweet spot between taking music seriously and not taking it seriously at all. And that polarity really shows in his music. It's intriguing, because a lot of music only has one dimension to it. Mac's got at least two.
Lie Likes Music yeah of course, sorry if I stayed that poorly. I meant more daws and just general things people might consider cold machines or something like that.
I would like to have your playlist if is that possible, you seems a guy with a good taste in music and i really love discovering new bands. Or if you have lastfm just add me there or smth and i will check the artists (www.last.fm/pt/user/nashart). Big up from portugal :)
Dude, your curiosity for the music is the same juice that made dudes like me record collectors back in the day before the internet, streaming and marketing experts running music labels. Finding something yourself and passing it on to others to have their own experience with is the quiet revolution. Cool.
Yeah maybe it is the same juice. I also love vinyls though. Don't have the biggest collection yet, but i'll expand it once i have the time and money for it. Have you collected for many years?
Awesome job, Lie. Mac is one of my favorite artists living today.. So creative and versatile, he always just knows how to write a solid album. I also find him as a big inspiration for recording. Can't wait to see who you do next.. So detailed and informative essays. I'll suggest Jeff Rosenstock, Car Seat Headrest and/or The Velvet Underground!
Thank you for supporting me my friend :) It means a lot! The Velvet Underground is pretty high on my list. You might see that video coming up during the second half of this month.
I recently got to go and see Ryan Adams in Manchester a few months ago and i've always thought of him as a really underrated singer/songwriter or somehow unheard of by a lot of people. Would be interesting to hear what you have to say about him and his music. Will definitely be watching more of your content though man, keep it up!
Lie, Thank you soo much for your video for Mac Demarco. You have made me a fan of his for life. I can't get enough. Your fantastic! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
De Marco's music and persona are fascinating. I listened to him only once and I got caught. Great analysis! Make a video about Peter Gabriel this way, with reference to his childhood, family, to his influences, his period with Genesis, then solo. It is difficult to synthesize so many informations and sketches, but would be a challenging effort and Peter deserves it. Thank you for the work you've already done for other artists.
Did not know him at all, that's why we follow you right?! I know Jonathan Richman, love his song Egyptian Reggae, thought it was a big hit when I was young. Have to listen more to Mac , but his video's from what I saw were pretty cool. This Video essay format is so much better than the older ones, so relaxing to look at. Nice new logo too ! I'll add some bands I would like to see . TX 👏
I had never heard about Richman until i started doing research for this video actually. But i'll give him a listen. Oooh i'm glad you like the new format. I try to make it so that you can just play it in the background as well. Much like a podcast, so that it can be interesting even without the visuals. And yes, feel free to add some requests :) Glad to hear from you Jackie.
You really have to listen to , my kind of woman, passing out pieces , this old dog, chamber of reflection , dreaming , ode to viceroy , salad days and let her go !!!!
thanks. i never really got into mac demarco despite everyone around me being obsessed with him, but this video has made me give him another shot. great video! very informative, keep up
Tape recording does not necessarily mean low-quality, in fact usually better than digital. Although old, crappy and cheap, domestic tape recorders can sound lo-fi. That is what Mac is using.
(Had you made a Rundgren review? Was you?) I used to enjoy DeMarco a lot. As time has passed, I just lost my interest. But your review on his works, lit up the beauty I used to see on Mac's albums! You got my like and subscription 👍
Felipe Fernandes Yes i made reviews of several of his albums. Did you watch one of them? And i'm so glad that your interest for his music spaked up again. Thanks for sharing.
Dude, your channel, your content, your writing.. I stummbled on it all today, watched like, 6 videos, went to subscribe and saw you only had 16k, I was expecting upwards of millions, you're doing some great work, you earned my sub for sure, keep it up and you're sure to blow up!
Ouh people are gonna love and hate that xD Genres is such a polarized topic. Some people hate new genres, others love them. I'll see what i can do. Psychedelic Pop is very much like psychedelic rock just softer. The artists use synthesiers, guitars often supplemented with effects like fuzz, flanger, tremolo etc. Some examples of artists that create this type of music is most notably The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Tame Impala, and Pond just to mention a few old and new ones.
I wouldn't call it psychedelic pop tho. Maybe psychedelic RnB? doesn't really feel energetic enough for pop and the chord progression doesn't really fit either.
I love Mac DeMarco because he has a lot going on in life... not all of it’s good, but it sure is he’ll isn’t bad... and he plays this happy kind of persona who has down days but he finds the best in those days and has good days and again... makes the most of them. If there was one word to describe his personality it’d be what we want ourselves to be; content. His just seems content with what ever happens.
Just found your channel and absolutely fell in love with it! These musical breakdowns of various artists are extremely inspiring for young artists like me:)
Awesome! Yes i remember someone requested Mac DeMarco in the comments of the last video (or somewhere else). And since i'm a big fan of him myself, i didn't hesitate to make one about him. Thanks for the support!
Thank you so much, this was really informative ! I love his music and the videos he creates with others. I plan to do an presentation about him, so this will be helpful.
I hate to be this person but this old dog was recorded on ableton, if you watch mac demarco Ernie ball video, he states it. By the way I love the videos.
In the Ernie ball video, mac says he used ableton to record the tracks, but didn't process anything using plugins- he sent it back out to a mixing desk to mix it. so its kind of half digital half analogue.
gr8 vid but don't play background music while trying to describe how certain songs sound, it gets rlly confusing. You should just play the song you are describing.
His songs feel complete since day one cause the personality you can feel behind his voice and narrative is distinctive, salad day is one of my favourites from him btw
Thank you :) It means a lot to me that you share some feedback. And no problem. Do you have any requests for what artist/band i should talk about next?

Well made video, incredibly informative, and about an artist close to my heart? You've earned a new subscriber my dude. Can't wait to see other good content like this.
What artist/band should be next?
FIshmans
Dan Auerbach \ Kurt Cobain
Genesis ( peter grabriels ) or rush
HOMESHAKE
Ty Segall
Mac looks like a human embodiment of a thrift store. That’s why I love him so much
lol that's true xD
oh my god yes
That's mad deep
His face looks like the son of Frodo and Sam.
Brroooo youre a genius
In 20 years his music will be considered as dad rock and our children gonna hate him
it already is dad rock
I’d always make more noises if he did
Dad cock
Since he has a lot of Dad Rock influences he’s kind of helped make it more hip and cool. Has enough cred that our kids will dig him like we dig stuff from the past too, I reckon
:'(
He's a likable, simple man.
He really is.
Thats what i like the most about him
Yes!
he's chill and humble, what's not to like about him?
dude mac demarco literally talks personally to you at the end of his albums that's why we get easily in his world
That too :) Maybe he should narrate some books in the future. I think that would sound dope.
Lie Likes Music totally! great channel btw :)
Lie Likes Music similar to the beatles
Mac is a freaking genius. Never have I ever fell in love with an artists and his craft until I met Mac
Really? Isn't there any other band or artist that you appreciate at the same level?
Lie Likes Music hey there’s this cool band called hippo campus, try making a video about them
ScruffPuppie

To me Mac Demarco is one of the best if not the best thing that has happen to music in the last couple of years, him and all the bands that came along
Many people would argue the opposite haha. But i do enjoy his music quite a lot.
I don't know about the indie-acts that follow though. Haven't listened that much to them.
Agree 100%
Steve VC haha, no
Steve VC Mac also inspired a bunch of shitty rip-offs, too. He’s still my favorite artist, but I don’t think he really had a “positive” effect on music
These video essays are so good, they're so detailed, keep it going man
rick the lai Thank you for saying that Rick 😊 I sure will. Wish you the best with your channel this year!
No comment's about the sound of the guitar ? He has an incredible use of effects and that makes his sounds instantly recognisable. He uses always the same guitar and it's a shitty guitar he bought for 10 bucks
I know, but i didn't want the video to go on forever. Most people only watch half of this anyway.
But thank you for adding it here in the comments :)
Wawawaw Wawawa he actually just got his own guitar made by fender and has good gear now
on his first albums he uses a cheap guitar he bought for 10 bucks, I saw that in an interview
Wawawaw Wawawa that cheap guitar was paired with a 300 dollar pedal and a 2000 dollar amp. The guitar is only part of his tone
Wawawaw Wawawa he plays an american fender stratocaster and had played one for a couple years

It's more like "OP-Pra", rather than "OH-Pra"
think 'hip hOP'-ra ;)

Mac used digital recording equipment for This Old Dog, not tape. I asked him myself, thats what he told me.
Julian CP cool! where did you talk to him?
in Durham, NC. I met him in September 2017.
Mac probably said that because it wasn't purely analog. But there's definitely something tapey in the mix.
Or just use GarageBand and iPhone headphones for the mic
I'll do my utmost best to try promote this channel, loving it so far.
Wow that's amazing to hear!! Thank you man. Love all your support!

Peter Kovács Yes that's what i tried to emphasize. Maybe i didn't make that clear enough. But thank you for adding that 😊
I want to say thank you for making these videos. Because of this, you showed me an amazing artist.
That's awesome to hear! No worries. I love making videos about music i like.
mac is the homie, thank you god bless
True! Thank you for watching man.
This way great! Very in-depth analysis. I would love to see a Title Fight music analysis, although they're not as mainstream & popular as Mac Demarco.
Thank you :) I haven't heard of them before. But i'll try to check em out sometime.
Thanks for mentioning them.

Its jizz jazz my dudes
I love Mac DeMarco because he has a lot going on in life... not all of it’s good, but it sure is he’ll isn’t bad... and he plays this happy kind of persona who has down days but he finds the best in those days and has good days and again... makes the most of them. Lol isn't that the Norwegian band that had a huge RUclips hit?
They kind of sound like Homeshake and Mac right?
YES. pls try to do one about them even tho we barely know anything about the band lolol
Kevin Zhu they are touring in Europe right now too... no state side dates tho
Understanding what? I like them but they are barely one year in the scene and have released only one album.
Lie Likes Music Pablo's a pioneer of 'meme rock' and the first of his kind. Serious dream pop with a fun twist.

young mac demarco looks like matty b lmao
Great video on DeMarco, here i am to announce to the world I am the culmination of what you will find in Mac Demarco, Homeshake, and Vacations.
Finally i get em 3am red taxi vibes!
I hate to be this person but this old dog was recorded on ableton, if you watch mac demarco Ernie ball video, he states it. By the way I love the videos.
No problem, it's good that people correct me. I can't get everything right each time.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment Ryan.
yaman prob got run through a tape machine
In the Ernie ball video, mac says he used ableton to record the tracks, but didn't process anything using plugins- he sent it back out to a mixing desk to mix it. so its kind of half digital half analogue.
Thanks man :)
Thanks :)
SUCH a good and genuine video thank you!

I can imagine it was xD He makes it look like a big party.
I'm so glad to see your channel growing like this!
Thank you. That's very nice of you :)
Chamber of Reflection's main melody is sampled from a Japanese artist, though.
I know. But it doesn't sound sampled. It sounds recreated with another instrument.
Right, I meant recreated actually. Still, wish you mentioned that.
Homo Sapiens ruclips.net/video/Q8oS_B6IaKE/видео.html There you go.
Nice intro for me ... I wanna hear more from Mac now ... off to buy his stuff
Good video but the “simple lyrics” caused by mostly one or two syllable words is a weak point considering most songs use one or two syllable words
GREAT video and well put together !
gr8 vid but don't play background music while trying to describe how certain songs sound, it gets rlly confusing. You should just play the song you are describing.
Good analysis - excellent presentation - nice work!
tame impala nexttr
Stella Lee Oooh i can see it coming 😉
