Excellent video. You covered every possible breakage and how to fix it without rambling and losing the part off screen. Thank you for taking the time to make the video. I'm sure you helped lots of folks dealing with this problem.
Bravo! Your 12 year-old video just showed me all the tricks needed to get my old tiller going again after it stripped the plastic pulley. So helpful to find out that the spring can be filed to get it to lock in the slot again - I used a small triangular file to notch the end on both sides. And your guide to install the spring first, then the pulley - great! Thanks so much.👍👍
Great great video, it creaked to me too after 5 seconds of operation, I turned it off immediately, 1.06 the part rotates nonstop thenks, I have to lubricate
Thanks so much! You covered every possible problem! I just bought an old snapper to restore and it has all this old tech on the pull cord, and the cord does not retract well, and the clutch does not engage anymore, all of this will help me get er going again ! Motor runs well, for its age, it is a 12 horse I/C. quiet motor. Can't wait to fix er up as my backup mower. You are the man. I could not live in Canada, too cold for too long. Been there in August before, Nestor Falls, cold nights in august! Good fishing though!
You helped me fix my tiller, especially by showing how the spring is wound in the housing. It sure saved me a trip to the repair shop! Thanks for posting this!
A sincere thank you for taking the time to put this video together. It allowed me to save my ailing lawnmower with about 30 minutes of work and saved me great frustration!
Oh man, thank you so much! I had to replace the plastic pulley and did not know what I was going to do or how to do it. Plus, you showed many other things that I needed to do to stop the screeching on other machines! Just perfectly explanatory with accompanying video made this easy to understand. You sir, have a gift. Thank you so much!
The best guide on here by far. Forget other vids that have you was around with screws and cable ties. This way is far easier and actually works! Also, the piece on the end that walks through the pull start cord replacement. The '6 turns' instruction was invaluable to get the spring tension just right. Thanks very much.
Great informative video - Thanks - Today I worked on a 41 year old starter on a 5 HP Tiller - and reinstalled the starter spring and went ahead a put a new rope in it . Gave $50.00 for it for my mom 15 years ago and she used it fir 5 years and when she quit making a garden - she told if I wanted to come and get it and I did . Rest I'd history ... thanks you helped me get the original stater cover on it now ....
Thank you so much for this tutorial, David. I have a Briggs and Stratton closing in on 25 years of service and you totally nailed the cause and effect of my pull rope malfunction.
I have spent over 90 minutes trying everything I could think of fixing my 40 year old Garden Way tiller...got everything running but this starter coil spring.....thank you...going back to work!!
Great tutorial. Exactly what I needed. I watched BEFORE I started the project and as a result was able to avoid pulling the spring out at all. The whole operation took less than ten minutes, including the removal and replacement of the pull/rewind enclosure. Total time from when the cord broke to having a running lawnmower -- including a trip to the hardware store one mile away, watching your tutorial, and doing the repair -- was less than an hour. Many thanks!
Hey, this was supper helpful. You covered everything I needed to know to fix my problem. I have the exact same coil. Thanks a million. My husband will be impressed when he learns that I fixed the recoil on the old tiller that he was ready to throw away.
This video saved me time and money ! I was winding the rope backwards. I set the spring in place, worked the pulley end onto the spring.. then wound up spring tension a little bit more, and finally got the rope in place. Old 1988 Briggs 12hp IC engine. Snapper mower, think the belt is fused to the drive pulley, as the blade turns the engine over,, so something is stuck in place.
Thanks a lot! I didn't really want to take it to a mower shop. The info on the right type of oil is really something that I needed to know as I have already oiled it with the wrong oil. I will fix that! Thanks again.
Thank you so much for this video. My problem went from looks impossible to not that difficult after watching your explanation. If there was a Nobel prize for RUclips videos I'd nominate you sir.
I was having the screeching sound on my Hayter lawn mower, was thinking of throwing it away until I saw your video, it's now working perfectly, thank you very much, cheers.
You sir, deserve many cold beers. Reel exploded out (no tabs bent in to hold it in place) and I was at a loss for getting it back in there the right direction and everything. This was EXACTLY what the doctor ordered. Thank you!
I had to convince my Dad that I could put the spring coil back plus the cord! Because I watched your video, it worked & my Dad was amazed! Although it did take 4-5 tries! I used a needle nose vice grip to hold it place. It helped when ours was a Briggs and Stratton. Mahalo from Hawaii!
Thanks! I was moments away from throwing this engine in the scrap and heading to Harbor freight! Your video is perfect for what I was seeing! Screeching, stalling, not recoiling, how to wind the spring, those dumb bend tabs! etc.... Thanks
WOW !!! Its about time someone really know what hes talking about ! Not only that explains everything in detail , What a God send ! Thanks for the great video .
Hi chughes376, I had the squeal/screeching, seizing pull start. I followed your directions and my 8hp B&S slasher mower is now running great. Thanks for taking the time to make it. It was very informative and well presented. I owe you a beer! Cheers : )
Awesome video! I found a "free" lawnmower yesterday with a broken cord. The assembly of my coil was different than yours, but the principle was the same. The part about being able to shorten a damaged coil and reshape it was extremely useful as I kinked the coil twice on the end trying to get it back in before figuring it out. Now that I got a working lawnmower I'm gonna go mow the lawn. Thanks!
Excellent video and detail. This helped me fix my 1979 tiller "Squealing" and return spring lube with ATF. New I just need a demo of the carb rebuild. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for being the only video (that I could find) to discuss this specific (older) recoil. All I needed to do was just dribble some ATF in on the spring and that fixed it - it now fully recoils. :)
Cheers David. I managed it and just about gave up looking as most are those modern plastic ones. The spring keeps sliding out again when I give it a good pull :) but at least I got the idea and I really appreciate your help.
I had that screaming noise from a mower my landlord left to take care of the place. I had it all apart but couldn't figure it out. Thanks for putting up the video it really helped.
Outstanding instructions - I have the exact Briggs and Stratton engine he shows - it took me hours to get the spring attached to the pull cord plastic piece but it is now fixed. This was the best set of instructions - this fella is patient and very knowledgeable.
Thanks man this video help me a lot .... I was going to buy a new lawn mower but not anymore!! Thanks agian keep loading new videos how to fix the throttle...
Thank you so much for the video...my string broke last night before I could finish mowing. Being the rope busted your video just showed me how to simply fix it. I will have to purchase some new string for sure as I am sure the rope will be to short, plus it is worn. Thanks again for saving me a lot of frustration and time.
Thanks David - Great video from the other side of the world. Inherited my father's 1968 rotary hoe and your video enabled me to reassemble the recoil starter after I fixed it - just needed some lubricant after 48 years! You guys are going into your spring and we're going into our autumn. Thanks again!
Man that was perfect! 10.0!!!! Thank you. I ran out of fingers at some point so I used a 2" c-clamp to hold the spring a bit while attaching the pulley. Excellent work.
Thank you! I have an old engine, and all the other videos I was finding were showing how to to replace the whole assembly on newer types. I remembered doing this once before, and watching dad fuss with it, and I figured I'd better hit RUclips before putting this mess back together.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I was trying to wind the spring and pulley together and then drop back in....for an hour, had to leave came home and found this video, got it the first time! You rock! This sounds fake but it's not...I am seriously so happy to have accomplished this task! (Back story- my son used to do the yard work, but suffered a brain injury and can't do it now)
dave thank-you, i trolled around you tube and i couldn't find the exact motor, and then i found you.....this was my very first engine repair--spring repair--i had to rejig both ends (i used my dremel) of the spring....i will post the video of my amazing journey.....sherri
Yee-Haw! I finally got the pull starter working on my eight horse tiller after thirty years of relying on the electric starter! Thanks for explaining it so clearly!
Very helpful video. The 14mins put me off, but it's all worth watching carefully so you understand what's going on and exactly what to do in terms of technique and sequence. Put to good use. Brilliant.
Awesome video!!! Completely saved me, and far better than any other vid out there. I know, as I tried to figure it out on my own beforehand and failed numerous times until I found this. Thank you for taking the time to make this.
Great video! Thank you for explaining how to maintain the shaft also, and the different ways to tension the spring for when the rope is broke. This video explains the entire cowl & re-wind starter housing maintenance and is very easy to understand.
Thanks man your time is very appreciated you saved my ass on getting to a job site on time in the morning! Thanks to you I can keep making money! Thank you thank you thank you!!! 😎👍
David, thank you for the great video/help. You were spot on about the challenge of hooking the reel to the inner part of the spring. For what it's worth, I used a nylon wire tie through the same hole in the housing where the outer part of the spring hooks. This helped hold the spring in place while I hooked the inner part to the reel. Once in place and secured with the tabs, I cut the nylon tie and pulled it out of the housing. Hope this helps.
Excellent instructions! You answered a dozen of my questions in about a dozen minutes. Can't wait to apply this to my chipper with this identical problem.
Best advice on the web! I was going to resort to using my drill to start my engine. Great practical tutorial, I found it easier for me to put the inner part of the spring on first .
A big thankssss for this great video . I have the same motor and I spent all yestrday trying to rewind bridds but it's very hard , so thanks to you I managed everything follows , you are really TOP handyman.
Thank you for youre video. I was about to order another spring when I noticed that I could regrind the end of the spring where it broke off. Thank you for helping me save some money. God Bless.
david sir,.. thanks very much... your video explained all my symptoms.. (i love this old briggs..) the screeching quit and i did it (the three handed monkey spring trick) on second try... got er running & carb cleaned & adjusted... you are good...i buy bbq if you get to austin..
Thank you my good man! I tried fixing it on my own without this video and made up a few curse words along the way. Never got it to work. Anxious to give it a try again with the help of this video. I'll let you know the result :)
I watched several videos on this topic here on RUclips and yours was by far the best and most informative one. Keep up the good work and I just subscribed to your channel.
Done them! I foound it hard to put the spring in the housing, so I wound it up tight on the pulley, then dropped the lot into the housing, then wound it up as described in the video, no more loose hanging end!
Thanks a lot for the video. Very helpful for the B&S engine that is used on our wheel line. Had a squealing sound coming from the starter, started jammed up as well. Going out to apply ATF fluid to the bearing, I'm sure that should fix the problem.
Thank you my friend, this was a big help. Had to replace this pull housing and had no idea that it just screwed off the main shaft.Simple repair...Thanks again!
This video is great. Thank you so much. You taught me everything I need to know and more. Great tips about the transmission fluid and the stuff about sanding the shaft.
This is the exact pull starter I was looking for. There are many on here that do not correspond to the one I am rewinding. Very good video.

Awesome video that finally addressed how to work on these recoil units and not leave the hard parts to one's imagination...
10 years old and this video is still helping people. Thank you for your efforts.
