    Very nice retrospective of the GMKs.
    The GMK87 seems to have issues with a film they have put behind the pcb. People have key registering problems etc. Most remove that film behind the pcb and the problems go away. Seems like their QC is not on point with this new one. We see it in our sub reddit. I'll pick one up for sure when I feel they're past their initial batch.
    I value a knob more than a screen. If you want to put a screen, fine but give me my knob! 😅
    I'm waiting for a leobog Hi8. Are you going to review one? Leobog has been putting out nice aluminium keyboards. Thanks again for your reviews 👍

      Yeah, just build my gmk87 yesteday, some keys that won't register properly unless you reseat the nearby switches first. Weird but i guess with that price its ok.

      You just need to open holes on the film/foam after that it's working great.

    Great video!
    Did you end up testing more QMK codes in via?
    I've been trying to map LT(1,KC_ESC) on the Caps lock key, but I can't make it take it at all. It feels like the only layer taps that work are the ones that are part of the prepaid special ones
    Applied the FW update multiple times, from your link and from the aliexpress link, no luck

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  Месяц назад

      Yes I did, unfortunately this appears to be a closed source software pretending to be VIA, so many QMK codes are just ignored.

    Btw quick question, when I try to insert the switch, my pins get bent. I have a 3 pin switch. Do ı need to have 5 pin switches, ? I already popped the plastic layer in the circle you mentioned to. What should I do , the keys don't register.

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  7 месяцев назад +1

      You will need to ensure that the pins are straight and push down on them gently but firm to make sure they go into the sockets. DO you have the PCB/Plate assembly free from the case? It'll be much easier to install them for the first time being able to support the sockets from behind and ensuring the pins are perpendicular to the base and parallel to each other. You also need to ensure that the plate is not bending and angling the switch, it needs to go straight down.
      I provide a guide in the video of the best way to do this.

    Hi, which do you recommend more nowadays the fekker IK65 or the GMK67-s? I plan to do some mods and replace switches and key caps but I won't do any sort of lubing (I'll buy prelubed replacements if need be). They are both $35 right now and they both have VIA so I'm really not sure. I'm hoping to achieve a marbly sound.

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  Месяц назад

      IMO the GMK67-S is good out of the box and is "marbly" without the need for mods, though I personally prefer having a knob over a screen. The IK65 mods nicely if that's what you'd prefer to do.

    • @anikeo1
      @anikeo1 Месяц назад +1

      @@MechKeyboards Thanks for responding. I'm definitely going to be switching out the switches and keycaps no matter which option, doing the tape mod, and replacing the foam. Knob vs screen makes no difference to me, so considering that context which do you think I would appreciate more?

      There isn't a built in shortcut for volume control, but since it is VIA, one just needs to map your own preferred keys to these actions.

    EDIT: some weird stuff going on with the json files. you have to use the preconfigured Fn key labelled 0X5221 in VIA or else there are some weird stuff going on with the layers, at least for Windows use. I had to reflash the firmware so I could get that special Fn key because it's not a normal VIA key.

    this video inspired me to grab this. i ended up purchasing this and so far i'm happy with it. thank you for linking the software; it took me a moment to compile all the necessary software and get it all running since i'm new to via and getting that little screen customized. only issues i have had are having to reload the .json every time i open via to customize things, but that's not terrible - the main issue is my left shift key and backspace feel slightly mushy, more so the left shift key (the backspace doesn't bother me too much, but it is noticeable). i don't think it's the switches i'm using or the keycaps because space and enter are just fine. i tried lubing with dialectric and bending them straight to no avail. maybe they need some break in time or something. other than that the only other thing i'm wondering is if i should take any case foam out to change up the sound. let me know if that's worth it, because i'm too lazy to keep taking the switches and keycaps off and having to pry it open seems like a chore from seeing other videos of the original gmk67. thanks

      Some people have reported receiving stabs in GMK keebs that would just not tune regardless of what they did, you could order a new set of stabilizers off of Amazon/Ali, either plate mounted, if you don't care to disassemble it, or some screw in stabs, which would take more effort, but that should fix those mushy keys. Sometimes it's like gambling, will the stabs on this board be good; it's a roll of the dice. Good luck and glad to hear you are enjoying it, mostly, cheers.

    Idk if it's just my board but putting keycaps on the top right of the board towards the screen was causing the board to bend to a point that I thought it was leaving a dent on that side of the board. I did what you said and placed switches with my hand under the pcb but I think I should've done that with the keycaps as well.

    • @MechKeyboards
      @MechKeyboards  7 месяцев назад +1

      Some keycaps have a tighter fit than others requiring more leverage to attach, it probably is a good idea to add the keycaps as well with these flexier boards.
