When this was announced, I had no idea how one would turn this concept into a fun gameplay experience. I feel a bit redeemed by the fact that, apparently, neither did the developers.
Maybe if it was a game about golum following the ring's fellowship and having to survive without being detected or straying too far while needing to survive then... maybe it could have been an interesting game.

Gollum is the video game equivalent of when the self checkout asks if youd like a receipt and you press no but it prints one anyway.
And then the receipt is 2 feet long but half of it is barely visible because the printer needs new toner
And rips so you only get half of it, the rest jammed in the machine.
And then asks for a tip...
Gollum should patch that in, so it prompts you for a tip randomly throughout the game.

I'll always laugh at people here in Australia that spend $120 on games to preorder them, only for them to be served with the same shit sandwich they always get then complain about it, while I sit back and say "I told you so".

The thing I don't get is why you poor Aussies are still getting ass*** on game prices in this day and age. It made sense in the 90s when shipping physical copies down under was a necessity, but what's the justification now? How is a digital download in Australia less convenient than anywhere else in the world? You don't even have the world's absolute best living standard, which someone could present as a counterpoint to reduced prices in places like South America. It's just weird how this is still going on and no one is doing anything to address it.

Gollum is a character you'd have as a side character that would only be playable for a few stealth missions and that'd be it. You'd have another character to play as for 95% of the rest of the game.
Kind of like how you could play as Daxter or Clank for a few missions in the old Jak&Daxter/Ratchet&Clank games.

as far as i know this game was made by a german company. so its not like its a massive company behind it.
i even watched the interview with the lead designer in german. its so crazy. in the interviews you see that they think that the game is really good and interesting lol.

If you want top play a Gollum like game, try "Styx: Master of Shadows" and it's sequel "Styx: Shards of Darkness".
They are by no means perfect and rough around the edges, but way more fun than whatever this shit is!
And they look way better and run well despite being released some years ago.

I have both and always get bored a few hours in, but that shouldn't stop others: Well made, stylish, solid controls and easy to understand/more difficult to achieve game loop. I haven't been able to put my finger on why I don't play them more.

We previewed this on our channel a few months back based on the cinematic and gameplay trailer footage and saw this car crash of a game coming! It's unbelievable that it's been released at all, let alone in this state. This game just wasn't needed and will do more damage to the wider LOTR game franchise than good.
The thing that's wrong with it is "it was made". I nearly choked on my baked potato. Mack you are one of our national treasures.

They should have made it a survival horror game with scenarios of Gollums fantasies and descent into madness.
I think its pretty hard to translate Gollums schizophrenia in to a game without it being some sort of lame gimmick. At least too hard for this game :D
it should have been huge open world where golumn travels, eats hunts and spies on orcs, meets hobbitses,fights giant spiders,crawls on walls,steals treasures under a dragon visits balrog in his deepest lair- open world travel adventure.
Perks to get faster(smarter maybe) use his second personality to be angrier, i could have been best lotr ever
@@votpavel Yes, and perhaps from the time he still had the ring. All sorts of cool stuff gameplay-wise you could have done with that. Then stealth could have actually made sense and it would of course have allowed him to take on much tougher opponents than himself. And he could have had like weird dialog with his Precious, so interesting from a narrative side as well.

I read a funny comment on MetaScore when this game was in pre-production and this person said "It's like if Fifa made another soccer game where you played as an audience member watching the game." This Gollum game has some similarities in that statement. haha

3 seconds in, the subtle chuckle at "just read the words" tells you what you're in for, I love it !
The really sad thing is... the concept itself could have worked. Remember Thief: The Dark Project? Imagine if gollum had worked like that, where you had to actually avoid detection or conceal your murders while trying to escape and track down the ring bearer...
Styx Master of Shadows and Shards of Darkness are basically what this game should’ve been.
To be fair, this literally makes you feel like Gollum and his descend to madness. Truly immersive.

Also sneakily hidden in the various soundtrack DLC are Elvish voiceovers. They locked actual in-game voiceovers behind a paywall.
This entire product has zero love for the IP or the fans. It's nice to see most everyone gets it this time. I will say the voice for Gollum is fine - Gollum was around LONG before Andy Serkis and Serkis's take is just that - a take on the character, like Bale's take on Batman. (now all I hear is Gollum in Batman voice: "Where is it!?? Where's the Ring!??")

It's just that the Andy Serkis Gollum is so iconic, so widely known and deeply engrained in popular culture, that any other attempt will pale badly in comparison, and you cannot help but compare them. Centering a whole (poorly made) game around an alternate version of Gollum is a fool's errand if I ever saw one.
@@utrak It also hurts that this version of Gollum is very derivative of the film version, just with a crappy cartoony face & appearance. If they stylized him differently, made him more like a creature instead of a human for instance, did a different color scheme, etc etc, then it could at least have some interesting creativity instead of looking like a bad bootleg of Jackson's Gollum.

And I also agree 100 percent,don't preorder games,I used to for the so called AAA games and it's always disappointing,haven't pre-ordered a game for years now.
Games like this are the result of preordering, the company gets it's money so there's no incentive to actually make a good game or even finish it, and it's 100% the gamers fault that this happens. If companies had to rely on sales after the game came out this crap would stop really quick.

I like that you get a achievement for jumping Gollum into the lava. They should give you another for the hilarious rant at the end.

I'm a Dev in the "current" industry and I am seeing a trend in how "smart" a game is being made. Every designer now is seeing what works and copying suit, the lack of creativity is honestly astounding. Art hasn't been affected by this but it just seems creating a new idea is absolute madness now.
This is what happens when developers stop doing in-house alpha & beta testing. Not only are bugs not being picked up but they have nobody to tell them the gameplay and storyline is crap. The new Zelda shows what is possible when the developer works to a quality goal rather than a set timeline.
When Mack paused before the words, I knew this is going to be a good one! :)

A good use of this character would be playing as bilbo and have a horror game based around getting the ring and escaping gollum.
All they had to do was copy Styx Master of Shadows to make a decent little stealth game with some LOTR fanservice. Hell, I might have paid ~20 bucks for that.

Mack , I have a great idea for a game ! How about playing the guys who run around in these dungeons , tunnels, buildings whatever with a bucket of paint marking all the climbing spots. Putting up the invisible walls so muppets cant fall off, blinding all the guards and putting up cloth sheets and ropes and stuff at ledges . And don't forget appropriately placed barricades , barrels and and boxes to use as cover. And lobotomise the enemies so they don't, use em Call it 'Simpleton Dungeon Simulator' or some such thing

My guess (and I'm playing Devil's advocate here) is that there was an initial vision where they went all out stealth that had direction. Then at some point there was a creative dispute with someone or other and the person/people that originally were in charge of direction left/were let go and replaced. I reckon that the people in carge thoght that this game would be too niche and not attract the mass of people needed to justify the licensing cost for the LOTR ip rights. They they turned this into a super generic, easy peasy game with no soul to try and appease to the usual AAA crowd whilst not even believeing in the product and trying to cut as many costs as possible to just release a playable product and be done with it hence why everything feels so half baked.
If this wasn't the case then God fucking help us if morons like these believe that this is a good game concept. This would be a complete lack of market understanding.
I think it's a pretty good guess, but this isn't coming from a AAA publisher, it's published by Daedalic, they are far from AAA.

I love PC ports these days. Xbox 360 graphics, "modern gaming" gameplay, requires a RTX 4090 to get 60fps.

I've long said that sadly we, as gamers, are largely responsible for the current state games are released in, as well as the prevalence of microtransactions and such, since to many will happily throw money at a titles, no matter how many time that same company has screwed them over.
I swore of AAA games years ago, largely thanks to Total Biscuit, and instead mainly buy indie titles and those from smaller studios and have been very happy for having done so.

Mac you hit the nail on the head. People seriously need to stop pre-ordering games and buying into this early access farce. It's the very reason why developers take gamers for a ride. No money for the developers = no early access which means full releases and polished games. Unfortunately people have more money than sense sometimes. This never happened pre-2000.

Personally, I think a stealth game playing as Gollum is actually quite a good base idea. As long as its executed right, why not? I feel like this is a wasted opportunity. I mean think back to the old Thief games. Imagine something like that set in LOTR and youre playing as Gollum and you have to head out to settlements to steal food to survive and then someone notices you, and hires you to steal artifacts that save the world. But Gollum doesnt care, because he just gets to collect a good treasure stash along the way to keep his precious company and plenty of food for the coming winter. Just a thought.
Movies are in direct competition with video games and it’s been that way for a long time now. So the smart thing for Hollywood to do would be to make GOOD games based on their properties. Why haven’t they figured this out??
