Frozen Stuck Seized Caliper Pin Removal HD (Failure & Success =D)

  • My failed attempt removing a frozen, seized and stubborn caliper pin. After 20 minutes of having zero success I decided to purchase a new caliper mounting bracket, caliper pins and the pin boot for $30 and calling it a day. In my opinion, spending the $30 was well worth the investment rather than spending hours attempting to remove the caliper bolt. As an alternative, try using a torch.

    After watching multiple videos of how to remove a seized caliper pin/bolt I mashed everything up and proceded as following:
    1. Remove rubber seal with needle nose plyers dont be scared.
    2.Torched the fk out of the bolt.
    3.hammered the fk out the bolt with large flat head.
    4.repeated steps 2 and 3 (taking 15 mins breaks to breathe).
    5. Applied adjustable wrench (quality and huge in size).
    6. Sprayed pb blaster a tiny bit (clean thoroughly after: pb blaster is not suppose to be inside where pin is located).
    7. Twist back in forth the 🔧 and hammer the wrench.
    8. Once bolt can spin 360 degrees while still "siezed" THEN take large flat head put the handle to your man chest and apply pressure like a hug while spinning the adjustable wrench.
    9. reassemble new pin with crc black or cemtex synthetic (green pack) caliper and brake. The substance is known to cause cancer and reproductice harm be CAUTIOUS and wear gloves.
    10. Reassemble all parts you are officially a Man.

    I don't have a torch to heat up rusty bolts.
    If I have the time and another ride I do this first, before breaking anything:
    2 to 3 times a day, for up to 4 days, use a small ballpeen hammer or similar weighted tool and tap firmly on 5 to 6 areas of the bolt housing area. I whack each area for 30 seconds. Then I spray it with oil, then I whack again. Then oil again. I've never had a rusty part not come out after 3 to 4 days of this. And usually the parts are reusable.
    I recently had to do this on a caliper bolt and pin (one piece). The threads were fine, it was the pin end...it was stuck solid in the receiver-end of the caliper. I couldn't turn the threaded end with a 18" extension! Took 3 days of whacking and oiling on 6 areas of the bolt housing. Then I could back it out.

    Heating up the bracket from the outside works on getting it loose. Most likely seized because who ever did the previous brake job didn’t use brake lube or the wrong lube. Mine actually broke off inside the bracket. If yours broke, again use heat but be careful as the pin will shoot out like a bullet as you’re heating up the pocket of air inside.
    I learned this from briansmobile1

    If the guide pin is frozen to the point the it can not be easily removed, the pin is probaby a write-off. The bracket will probably have some rust mixed with some brake dust and dried up lube in the hole, so you need to have some plan on cleaning that out.
    I imagine washing it out with some penetrating lubricant and brake cleaner?
    In any case , that bracket must come off to do that.
    To remove the pin: grab the pin in a table top vice, and pull while twisting the caliper body back and forth.
    If the pin does not move at all, you are running a high risk that you end up snapping the pin, and then you will have to get a new bracket anyhow. Drilling a broken pin out is more or less hopeless.
    Given the difficulty of removing the stuck pin, and the difficulty of cleaning out the bracket, if it does not come out in 15 minutes,
    I usually give up and just replace the bracket. It really comes down to time: trying to deal with a stuck pin is an open-ended time waster, that has a high chance of not working out in the end. So..
    What I do now, is pick up the brackets, the guide pin kits and the rubber boot kit ahead of time, and return them if I end up not needing them. Got into this habit after having to spend an hour (twice) running around to get the bracket when the pins broke on me on both sides. BTW the rubber boot kit is pretty expensive, but has 4 boots in it, so one kit covers both sides.
    I recommend putting thread locker on the bracket mounting bolts as well.
    What else? Note that the mounting hardware (ie the shims) may be different on the top and bottom. These are stainless steel, so they can be cleaned and reused. If you replace the shims, pay attention so you do not end up ussing the 2 bottom pieces on the same side ( top and bottom) because this makes inserting the pads nearly impossible. That is, if you are having trouble installing the pads, double check if you are using the correct top and bottom shims.
    Messing with the calipers ( pushing back the piston, hanging it upside down), often kick loose some crud in the lines and the caliper, so it is not a bad idea to bleed the line after you are done. If you do this, and see that the fluid coming out is dirty
    (black), you will know I was right :-) Before pushing the piston back into the caliper, I tend to remove some brake fluid from the master cylinder ( if the fluid level is high) with a turkey baster to prevent the brake fluid spilling out all over.

    Been known to invent new cuss words to help get them out. Putting the bracket in my large bench vise and using a puller helps. Caliper brakes and road salt does not mix well. Another trick, dump the bracket with pins in a bucket with a 50-50 solution of water and muriatic acid, eats that rust away like crazy. Did you know our illustrious EPA banned electroplating in this country? Sure that electrolyte contains acid and metals and can be cleaned before dumping it. But really have a terrible EPA, don't help solve problems, but fine and even shut us down.
    If those brake products were electroplated, won't be near the problems combined with winter road salt, just begging for problems. Write your congress person if you feel like wasting your time. Working for a more conscientiousness company, we shipped our products to Mexico, just inches across the border to have them electroplated.

    There is another way: Pins rotate inside of the break mount. you need to initiate the rotation to loosen it up. WD-40 or other antiseize fluid is helpful, heavy hummer and good quality (craftsman) wrench key (small that wont go over end tip and bigger that will hold it for initial rotation) and pliers wrench (once the pin is rotating). Initially remove the rubber seal from pin to the housing to try save it and reduce damage to it.
    1) You take bigger wrench key and start to initiate pin rotation w/ hummer in break housing turn little Rt vs Lt (doesn't matter which side - no tread).
    2) Once initial rotation established, pour more antiseize fluid and switch to pliers wrench to break more loose the pin w/ rotation.
    3) Take smaller wrench key and put it bellow the end pin stoppers and beat it pretty well close to it. direction of beating will be like you want to remove it pulling it out. It will take a time and combination of antiseize, rotation and beating.
    Usually I save the Pin, rubber not usually. .

    I just experienced this on a different model of car even though it's not that old. It was TERRIBLE. No screwdriver would not have made any difference. It usually require a very hot torch (get it ROCKET EFFING HOT) and use an 8 lb sledge.

      @CarsNToys  6 лет назад

      Absolutely. A torch would certainly work. Or for around $20 just grab a new kit. Cheers.

    It has a rubber boot and if not aligned correctly water gets in and rusts it.

    Im still pissed you couldn’t get that pin out

    • @JodBronson
      @JodBronson 4 года назад

      Here is a lesson... Take that pin out every year. Grease it and put it back. You will never have to deal with it again.

    The only wah to get pin out is heat clamp the bracket to something heat it up and twist of with visegrips works great

      john strong Absolutely. I was hoping to get this done w/o torch but what can you do.

    • @janicerogers6946
      @janicerogers6946 7 лет назад

      I got three out. One upper and the two lowers on both front wheels. The last one is stripped. Will get torch to heat it up and use vice grips. Tried with vice grips without heat and no luck.

    That's not the only problem with this vehicle apparently lack of maintenance is an issue look at those lower A-Arms if that goes out of the shop like that it's a wreck waiting to happen

  • @williamsrdemeter9147

    I had the same problem trying to get the pin out and I took where the pain goes in that metal by heating it up with a torch and then I grabbed it with vice grips and tried turning it up and down it finally loosened up and I got it out he is the answer

    Snap it off grind it down and drill it out. That's why you need to service your brake calipers each season.

  • @iameatingursnack
    @iameatingursnack 6 лет назад +1

    You could always put it on your bench and use a drill press.... drilled one out today for an 08 f250 diesel
