Good day, I have a Canon 50D and CANNOT get the center, white square to go away in manual focus. I have watched your video as well as a few others and read through the comments here hoping to find something that I missed. ML has been installed and seems to be working as intended. I am very familiar with this camera as I bought it new in 2008 but I do not know what else to try. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
So, I did thhe tutorial for my Canon T3i but the box is still there even after turning off the autofocus feature. However, I haven't connected the camera to the computer via HDMI. Will the box go away once i plug it in and use OBS?
I'd gotten a camera for my birthday and was wondering how to use the HDMI output from the camera, after getting the USB output working. After watching the video I installed this software just because it looked cool. My question is, what would you say is the advantage of using the HDMI output vs the USB? I'm still not 100% sure but I think my EOS 600D can do 1080p 60fps over the USB link, so I'm not sure the quality would be any different using HDMI. Is it just a case of whatever output type suits the situation best? For streamers I would imagine the USB link to be easier to use so I'm not quite sure then what problem this would solve, thats why I'm not quite sure about my USB output quality as I could imagine you'd want to use HDMI for good quality while the USB can be used more to do photos (instead of video). Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
Although every camera is different, but most of the older versions have better HDMI Video Quality compared to the USB Video quality. Specially the ones that don't support USB 3.0. HDMI Signal not only carries high bit rate video, it also has better color quality, and video bit rate. However you need to have a video Capture card for the HDMI output, where as the USB output does not require any additional hardware. The type of your Video Capture card also has a big role in your video quality. I am using an elgato Camlink 4K and I am very happy with it.
CORRECTIONS, One, you do not need to backup your FIRMWARE, it's still there, Magic Lantern just runs beside it. Two, you can turn OFF the overlays (top/bottom bars) to get a 3x2 clean image, instead of a 16x9 with bars.
The firmware backup is a legal disclaimer required by Magic Lantern to release them from liability should there be any false claims. About turning off the overlay to get a clean 3x2 image is correct, but it's the same as cropping the image in post. You lose the top and bottom if you produce videos with 16:9 aspect ratio.
Well I have a t2i and a t3i. The t3i was able to install the software but the quick double delete button doesn't bring up the 3rd party menu. I formatted and then tried to update the t2i with the 3rd party software (550D / Rebel T2i 1.0.9) and got an error telling me it's expecting a 550D which the camera is. Very mad at this situation, I wanted to use both cameras for streaming, bought extra cables & HDMI capture usb devices to get this going. You might want to remove t2i & t3i from the title (maybe confirm with others that this is an issue)
Hi, I am not sure why it didn't work for yours because many users reported a successful upgrade. Make sure that you downloaded the files from this page builds.magiclantern.fm/
On 5D Mark III software rev 1.3.6 you can turn off the cube via menu settings. Cube will appear on LCD if lens in manual mode but is not in the actual recording! If in AF mode you can take still pictures while recording video then the cube will appear to indicate focus process but its not in the video recording.
how do you get sound out of the HDMI in live mode? I use an external monitor with a headphone jack. I get sound only when I play back a video. I get sound out of the camera headphone jack. but when I plug it into the monitor, I get no sound. my camera in on a gimbal. so I don't want to plug it into the camera. canon 5D mark 2 with magic lantern installed
The audio output port on a Canon 5D Mark II is only for playback mode. It doesn't have a live microphone pickup stream. For that, you need an independent external Microphone separately not the Cameras internal microphone.
Thank you very much for the explanations, but I have a question, I have an updated 6DMark2 1.1.1., but the Magic Lantern version is for 6D 1.1.6., and I found version 1.1.1. on the 60D, which one should I use? or neither of them? Thank you
I have a 600D, installed magic lantern and a 4K Hdmi Recording device but I still see all the parameters on my screen. Please help. Your video did not show the steps how to shut off the ISO Date AF Live and battery status.
I have question. Is it possbile see the video also on display and computer in the same time ? My cam is not it the same place where is computer and if I want to zoom or focus it makes it very complicated. Thank you!
Thanks so much for an immensely helpful video. Magic Lantern is totally worth it. All these years I've had a T3i... finally, no white focus box when testing streaming with OBS. Since I cannot get the EOS Webcam Utility working with my computer (OBS simply will not "see" the T3i as a video capture device-- even with the regular EOS Utility NOT running, even in the background), I had a couple options-- Digicam Control (DCC Webcam) -- the free software which works PERFECTLY (and seems to have a better framerate than the official EOS Webcam Utility)..... and, I bought a $20 HDMI to USB capture card, as the framerate is much faster/cleaner... but that damn white box, haha. This solved it. Thanks SO much! Subscribed!
Thanks for this, works beautifully on my Canon 700D. Small tip: there may still be some overlay after disabling it in Magic Lantern. The rest of this, for example a grid, can be disabled in the regular menus. I wasn't able to remove autofocus GUI, so I had to disable it.
At the time when I made this video the T7 was not supported, but check on Magic Lantern's website they might have added that model. Here is the link builds.magiclantern.fm/
Wish you could do this with the EOS 4000d. I had to buy another camera (Sony ZV-E10) because the Canon I got didn't have the features I was looking for. No microphone/headphone output, can't use dummy battery, and no clean hdmi output as well. Very beginner friendly camera if you're getting into photography only, but not too great for video IMO. My fault for not doing my research before buying!
I have a Canon 80D and I want to use it to take live videos, I connect the HDMI output to the capturer and from the capturer to the cell phone and only the video comes out, but the audio does not come out. As I do. -Does AUDIO come out via HDMI from the Canon 80D live? -When playing recorded videos if the audio is present. Thank you
This sounds like a Computer issue, if you are using Windows you need to go to Audio settings and pick HDMI Audio as your source of audio for recording.
If you turn off the auto focus on your Lens the square will disappear from the HDMI BUT the hdmi feed is cropped and MOST IMPORTANT is 1080i59, it's interlaced No matter what recording setting you set in the Rebel T4i I really hope you will talk about this in this video
The reason why I didn't talk about this is, because this is not the case on all models. Some do support full HD output where as others only support low resolution outputs. Not to mention some have upper and lower black bars that you have to cut off in post production. I contacted Canon about this and they said the older video processing chips can't handle any higher work load, so it can't be fixed with a simple firmware update.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 yes but that interlaced output is really annoying I've no idea how this is dealt with when recording on a Ninja or external recorder... But i never ever recieved interlaced footage from a DSLR.... I've the 650D and I'm using the Intensity Pro 4K (PCIE version) This 1080i60 was a very unpleasant surprise... So ok it's possible to use Yadif deinterlace in OBS or whatever but this HDMI output is FAR FAR less good then the actual recording h264 from the 650D.... This topic of interlaced HDMI doesn't seems to bother any one....... ??? This very curious that no body care about it
As for the croping I understand and you talked about it The APCS already have something closer to 16/9 So it's probably "less" annoying than for Full Frame captor then even have an explanation on ML website Q&A But no mention of the interlaced output...
@@Aniki82 It is indeed annoying, it bothered me so much that I went ahead and purchased a new Canon EOS RP Mirrorless camera to get Full 1080P, and 4K clean HDMI Output.
worked for my canon t3i, but there is a wavy motion effect that i belive is being caused by a interlaced output rather than a progressive output. Is there a fix for this?

Hi there, I have a problem now, I have done everything but for some reason the shutter turn off and on after 30 min, I've juts did a video now and it turns off and on after 30 min. is there a ways I can have continuous live streaming without interruptions, my streaming is usually around 1:30 to 2 hours....I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks a lot! Made the mistake of updating the firmware of my 550D to 1.1.1, only to realize that a tested version of ML for 1.1.1 didnt exist. Had to downgrade to 1.0.9 and then install ML as per this tutorial!
5D is an excellent camera for video recording, however only if you record on it's internal Compact Flash Memory Card. If you use it for live broadcasting or recording on a PC using the HDMI out, then you will not get the full 1080P resolution. Also when recording video the Auto Focus will not work, so you have to manually focus constantly if your subject is moving.
Sorry, but I did everything the video explained, and it didn't work. I updated the firmware, disabled Global Draw, but the screen is not clear when streaming over HDMI. Is something missing? My camera: EOS T2i/550D
Hi I have magic lantern installed on my t3i and something odd is happening, after some like 20 min or less, my camera disconnect or goes to sleep and I have to check every time my screen to see when it happens and then click the shoot button again. I have clicked on record on the part to turn off automatically when stand by , on recording or recording and stand by, since I am just outputting the hdmi i click turn off on recording on Magic Lantern; meanwhile on the setting on the camera is never to shutdown the screen at all, so why I cannot have it running like using webcam utility for 2 hours or more...any help would be appreciated.
The models which are not currently listed will be added in the near future. They are working tirelessly to create firmware for all major Canon camera models. I don't recommend trying similar models or similar firmware versions unless it is approved by Magic Lantern's software engineers.
This has been a struggle. So the 650D / T4i still will not have clean HDMI after all these steps. I had a hard enough time finding a 1.0.4 firmware as Canon doesn't support it anymore. I also have manual focus on and still not working.
Since the mirror goes up when you shoot video the auto focus will not work on DSLR cameras. So leaving the Auto Focus On will not do you any good. For that you will need to use a Mirror less camera like a Canon EOS RP
Everytime i take a photo, the screen suddenly turns black and it takes seconds to back to normal. How can i fix this problem? Is it the cable or the monitor? I use canon 600d
With most DSLR cameras Auto Focus only works when the Mirror is down, once the mirror is flipped up for exposure the Focusing action is not possible. So in order to get full HDMI feed you have to shoot in video mode with the mirror up and Auto focus is not possible in that settings.
Hi, awesome video, thanks for all the detailed info. I just have one question, what cable are you using? An HDMI to usb? Is it plugged directly to the pc?
I am using a USB Video Capture card which has HDMI input on one end and USB 3.0 plug on the other end. I bought the higher end one called elgato camlink 4k, but you don't have to get that one any cheaper ones should also work fine. For example the first link is the one I have and the 2nd link is a cheaper version of that www.ebay.com/itm/175016601258 www.ebay.com/itm/195049289690
Not when I posted this video, but the Magic Lantern team is constantly working on adding support for more models. So I recommend you check out their site. builds.magiclantern.fm/
Thanks for the video very helpful. I have three question 1. Will it work on the Rebel T5 2. Do I have to always use the memory card with fimware in it to get clean HDMI, or will it stay installed in the camera permanant. 3. Should I use this method or be satisfied with the option canon provide with the USB out- EOS Webcam Utility, which is not as good as HDMI but serves the purpose with clean output.
No problem! 1. Yes it should work for T5 as long as your Firmware Version is 1.0.2 builds.magiclantern.fm/1200D-102.html 2. Yes you must have the Memory Card in it if you want to Run Magic Lantern. If you remove the card the camera will load it's original default firmware just like it does now. 3. No for the Webcam Utility you don't need any modification, but you are limited in features and functionalities
Thanks!! This worked perfectly on my 1100D / Rebel T3. I did have firmware version 1.0.5 on my old Rebel, however, it's since been updated to 1.0.6 by Canon. The magiclantern update says it has to be 1.0.5 in case people are having issues, that could be it.
Is there a solution for the bodies that are kinda in the middle deadzone, where they have usb video streaming support with canon utility but no clean video purely through hdmi? Running with a T6s/760D myself and it's always annoyed me that I /have/ to use USB to get video streaming from it, and there's no magiclantern support either :
@@BatistaBass I have been criminally lazy with this. More of a content appreciator than creator these days. I had plans to try this for use with OBS but I just haven't gotten around to it.
I tried whatever on the 70d. But the only solution is the webcam output. And record and stream that on the computer. The good news is: no stop in recording after half an hour.. And clean output of course.
Thank You for this video. There is still a gray box around the entire window. the HDMi is clean, however I can't figure out how to get rid of this box. I am using a Canon 60D
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 It's on manual focus. I don't meant the gray box in the middle of the screen. There is a gray box around the entire frame of the screen.
@@MafiaTrends If you are talking about the bars on the top, bottom, and sides that is because of 4:3 vs 16:9 aspect ratio sizes, which you can either change, or crop in post production.
The presenter mentions that you have to turn AUTOFOCUS off while video streaming...but when using a USB connection you do not need to turn off autofocus (which is very useful if you move at all). DO u have to turn off autofocus for totally clean HDMI?
On all DSLR cameras the Auto Focus will not work when the Mirror is UP for Video recording or streaming. The Auto focus only works on Mirrorless cameras when shooting Videos or live streaming. So you must turn off the Auto Focus to get rid of the focus box.
Do you think it should work the 1.0.3 firmware version ? I already had it installed before viewing your video. On the Magic lantern site it specifies their patch works with the 1.0.2 firmware version (even if it says the test actually failed :)).
I don't think it will work with 1.0.3 if it didn't work on 1.0.2. So I would wait and see if Magic Lantern will fix the bugs on their firmware for this camera. Also, did you know that now even Canon has released a Webcam Utility for their DSLR cameras so that they can be used as normal webcams?
Great video! I have a Canon T4i, would you recommend using 2 different SD cards, one for regular camera use with original firmware and one for streaming with the updated firmware?
Thank you, and yes that is a good idea just to be on the safe side and not to accidentally format the Compact Flash Drive in which you have the custom firmware.
Any tips on how to get that clean HDMI screen for a Rebel T6? Really want to use it for live-streaming but I haven’t found a way to get rid of that auto focus box and there’s no link on Magic Lantern for that model.
Hi, they are actively working to cover all Canon DSLR cameras, however currently they only have for limited number of them. Pleas keep checking and as soon as they cover more I will put the link on the description of this video. Meanwhile try turning off the Auto Focus to Manual on the physical switch which is on the Lens itself. Thank you
Thanks for your video. I bought Live Pro L1 and am trying to do livesteaming with Canon MK2.But I found Live Pro L1 can not recognize MK2 as webcam , when I connected with HDIM cable. I wanna know Clean HDMI by ML could be a solution for me? I was so disappointed and sad during first test today.
Canon DSLR cameras can be connected to PC in two different ways, via the Mini USB Port, or HDMI port using a video capture card. If you use the Mini USB port then you will need a still capture software such as CaptureOne to take still shots only. The camera will not be recognized as a webcam. If you use a Video Capture card and connect the camera via the HDMI Port it will show as a webcam for most programs including OBS/X-Split/WireCast/V-Mix and more.
Thanks for your compliments, about your Canon EOS M3 it's very similar to the new EOS M200, so did you try this ruclips.net/video/eBLFLHXrThA/видео.html
Thank you so much for this! Just got my old camera set up when I was about to purchase a new one for streaming. I had a question, do you use a capture card? I am using my elgato HD60S+ or whatever it's called, and when I pull it up in OBS, it shows a very small screen. I can obviously stretch it out no problem, still looks great. But I was wondering if this is the way to go or if I am missing something. Thanks!
No problem, and Yes I am using the same elgato USB to HDMI adapter but mine is the 4K version. Although I don't shoot at 4K I still like to have the ability to do so if need be. About the video size you need to make sure the capture or live-stream settings on your OBS matches that of your camera output, and you will never have to stretch the video to force it to fit the frame.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Thank you so much. For some reason, my Elgato program says it's capturing in 1080 at 30fps but OBS can only select 720. Not sure what the problem is. Looking for some answers online.
I am using a USB Video Capture card, and a Xsplit for broadcasting, I also use OBS which is Free for broadcasting. I made a complete video on my Video Setup here is the link if you are are interested in seeing it. ruclips.net/video/NnY-Zl1-WM4/видео.html
Turn Off the Auto Focus, by the way Magic Lantern will not reside on your camera bios, once you remove the card it will default to the original Canon Firmware.

The type of your Video Capture card also has a big role in your video quality. I am using an elgato Camlink 4K and I am very happy with it.
I just wish I could avoid seeing black screen once I connect to HDMI
Yes that depends on the size and shape of the sensor in your DSLR, not all of them are 16:9 sensors.
It may not be on the Video recording to the Compact Flash card, but it probably will be on the HDMI Out signal
how do you get sound out of the HDMI in live mode?
Thank you

I have question. Is it possbile see the video also on display and computer in the same time ? My cam is not it the same place where is computer and if I want to zoom or focus it makes it very complicated. Thank you!
Very few cameras support that, most of them don't support dual video out because it requires double the work load on the video processor chip.
Subscribed!
You are very welcome, and I am glad it was helpful to you. Thanks for your subscription I truly appreciate your support
Thanks for this, works beautifully on my Canon 700D. Small tip: there may still be some overlay after disabling it in Magic Lantern. The rest of this, for example a grid, can be disabled in the regular menus. I wasn't able to remove autofocus GUI, so I had to disable it.
You are welcome, and yes I had to do the same with my Canon 5D Mark II
how did you crop the weird rectangular overlay? im also on 700D and i cant seem to get the correct proportions
I have a Rebel T7/2000D. Do you know any fix/software that will produce a clean HDMI?
At the time when I made this video the T7 was not supported, but check on Magic Lantern's website they might have added that model. Here is the link builds.magiclantern.fm/
Wish you could do this with the EOS 4000d. I had to buy another camera (Sony ZV-E10) because the Canon I got didn't have the features I was looking for. No microphone/headphone output, can't use dummy battery, and no clean hdmi output as well. Very beginner friendly camera if you're getting into photography only, but not too great for video IMO. My fault for not doing my research before buying!
I agree the EOS 4000d is not ideal for Videography.
Do you need a "Compact Flash" card specifically, or will a normal SD card work as well?
As long as your camera can boot from that specific card slot, any type of card is fine.
Thank you sir! One question though: how to get the black bars away? Looks bad while on zoom etc. Thanks in advance!
On the lens itself there is a sliding switch for Auto Focus, put that switch on OFF or Manual position.
Wow! Totally worked for my Canon Rebel T2i. Great job for this amazing tutorial!
Glad it helped!
works well for canon 1200d but border removal of video seems not possible. I was trying to do this for HDMI video recording.
Make sure to turn off the Auto Focus switch on the lens.
If you turn off the auto focus on your Lens the square will disappear from the HDMI
BUT the hdmi feed is cropped and MOST IMPORTANT is 1080i59, it's interlaced
No matter what recording setting you set in the Rebel T4i
I really hope you will talk about this in this video
The reason why I didn't talk about this is, because this is not the case on all models. Some do support full HD output where as others only support low resolution outputs. Not to mention some have upper and lower black bars that you have to cut off in post production. I contacted Canon about this and they said the older video processing chips can't handle any higher work load, so it can't be fixed with a simple firmware update.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 yes but that interlaced output is really annoying
I've no idea how this is dealt with when recording on a Ninja or external recorder...
But i never ever recieved interlaced footage from a DSLR....
I've the 650D and I'm using the Intensity Pro 4K (PCIE version)
This 1080i60 was a very unpleasant surprise...
So ok it's possible to use Yadif deinterlace in OBS or whatever but this HDMI output
is FAR FAR less good then the actual recording h264 from the 650D....
This topic of interlaced HDMI doesn't seems to bother any one....... ???
This very curious that no body care about it
As for the croping I understand and you talked about it
The APCS already have something closer to 16/9 So it's probably "less" annoying than for Full Frame captor
then even have an explanation on ML website Q&A
But no mention of the interlaced output...
I think the Wavy motion is due to an incorrect video system such as NTSC vs PAL/SEC, but I could be wrong.
I'm still hoping for a build for the Canon T6/1300D.
Fingers Crossed, hopefully they will make it
Can i use like recording 35 min with 5mk2 heling from magic lantern?

Hi, it looks like you need to change the video resolution in your camera. Set it to the max resolution possible at 16:0 aspect ratio
If using this technique will the black bars show on a zoom call??
Yes, unless you zoom in to shift them outside of the viewable area.

Any idea what the camera is outputting the HDMI of the 5DMK2? 10-bit 422 1080, etc...??? When doing this clean output with magic lantern.
On the Canon 5D Mark II the out put is not 16:9 HDMI, it is a lower resolution and you will get to black bars on the screen.
I wanted to see if I could get help I did everything step by step on my Canon rebel T3 but my box is still appearing can you please help me
Turn off the the " Auto Focus " switch on the lens itself.
Please i needed camera that can make a good video. Is 5D good for video recording?
5D is an excellent camera for video recording, however only if you record on it's internal Compact Flash Memory Card. If you use it for live broadcasting or recording on a PC using the HDMI out, then you will not get the full 1080P resolution. Also when recording video the Auto Focus will not work, so you have to manually focus constantly if your subject is moving.
Thanks for you video!
Is there any way to remove black padding around video when streaming to TV ?
The only way to do that is to zoom the image which will lower the quality.
Sorry, but I did everything the video explained, and it didn't work.
I updated the firmware, disabled Global Draw, but the screen is not clear when streaming over HDMI.
Is something missing?

You can get one for very cheap here is an example www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832813339734.html
Any suggestions on Canon T6i since it is not listed on magic lantern?
The models which are not currently listed will be added in the near future. They are working tirelessly to create firmware for all major Canon camera models. I don't recommend trying similar models or similar firmware versions unless it is approved by Magic Lantern's software engineers.
This has been a struggle. So the 650D / T4i still will not have clean HDMI after all these steps. I had a hard enough time finding a 1.0.4 firmware as Canon doesn't support it anymore. I also have manual focus on and still not working.
Actually it should work if you have the firmware version 1.0.4
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Yeah I changed from 1.0.5 to 1.0.4 and followed the steps in the video. I'm still not seeing clean HDMI out.

How to use ATEM MINI with CANON 80D clean hdmi output. Turn off the autofocus in lens.

i think u can stay in manual. You jus need to go in autofocus settings and turn off focus box
Since the mirror goes up when you shoot video the auto focus will not work on DSLR cameras. So leaving the Auto Focus On will not do you any good. For that you will need to use a Mirror less camera like a Canon EOS RP

Make sure the shutter speed is not set to multi seconds for night shots, this is not normal.
without auto focus is unusefull for me
With most DSLR cameras Auto Focus only works when the Mirror is down, once the mirror is flipped up for exposure the Focusing action is not possible.
3. Should I use this method or be satisfied with the option canon provide with the USB out- EOS Webcam Utility,

1. Yes it should work for T5 as long as your Firmware Version is 1.0.2 builds.magiclantern.fm/1200D-102.html
2. Yes you must have the Memory Card in it if you want to Run Magic Lantern. If you remove the card the camera will load it's original default firmware just like it does now.

Canon DSLR cameras can be connected to PC in two different ways, via the Mini USB Port, or HDMI port using a video capture card. If you use the Mini USB port then you will need a still capture software such as CaptureOne to take still shots only. The camera will not be recognized as a webcam.
