The reason giant sworbs are impractical is not because of their combat capabilitys, its because carrying a huge chunk of metal is very hard.
It works with Guts because he has been swinging oversized swords since he was a kid and he is freakishly strong. It is also important to note that, especially when it comes to the dragonslayer, he actually tries to end the fights in as few swings as possible, because the sword is still very heavy and awkward, and he does lose the ability to wield it properly if he takes too much damage. He is much more nimble with the stuff he uses until he becomes the black swordsman, and only can use the dragonslayer similarly after donning the Berserker armor.
A legendary weapon of this size requires a unique fighting style of its own, not to mention it's big enough to double as a shield as well.

@@shootaman2 Don't need to move faster homey. Just need that heavier weapon and the reach. ;)
@@shootaman2 Defenders don't need to move as much as the attackers do, specially if they can easily move away while putting the sword in the way between them.
@@AscendantStoic I get what your getting at but I really don't think its that's simple. You are basically totally relying on your blows to hit. I cant help but feel if the person you were fighting just focused on baiting you then punishing you after a miss they could just make you look foolish. In full plate i could see this sword working just fine but against someone dressed light with a light weapon they could just dance around you since they aren't carrying a stupid amount of extra weight and there weapons are likely decently balanced and super easy to use.
@@billfred9411 Assume both warriors have armor, breastplate at least, also you are still thinking in terms of regular combat, this is not the case here, using the weapon as a shield you can charge at someone with the sword as cover and knock them off balance by battering them then use that opening to finish them off with one blow, my point still is that with this weapon you will have to fight very differently from a traditional sword.
We can't argue against it's impracticality because there's literally 0 giant swords in our museums. 999/1000 you will lose against someone with full control of their weapon.
It looks cool and it deserves to exist and be practiced because of it. Nothing else matters.
Fair enough.
We often forget that majority of melee based weapons weren't swords but actually spears. Turns out stabbing a foe with a long extended reach knife is better than having a long knife, plus you could still use the spear as a tool version of a knife
@@DigitallyTwistedOutlaws1178 Keep it up. It's amazing to see what you can do with that thing!
@@Crunchymunchys Absolutely. Spears are the king of medieval weaponry. When you mean using it as a tool you mean detaching the spearhead to use as a regular ass knife? I thought those things were pretty secure in place.
Yea the problem comes when you start swinging it and can't change direction mid swing, you are quite literally overextending on every strike with that sword leaving you vulnerable... Kinda like in the UFC if a fighter overextends a punch, his chin is exposed for a fraction of a second longer than if he didn't over extend BUT that fraction of a second is still what gets the guy clipped. Not planned... but I am going with natural! The Colossus Form I have developed is similar in parts of the movements to what Kentaro Miura drew Guts doing in Berserk. It's the only way to really wield giant swords, by using full body movements.
For the people who are skeptical, its the same principle as a step-back jab in boxing. Instead of your fist, its just a massive hunk of steel.
The only intelligent fighter with experience has spoken. Good to meet you.
Not quite. I think I understand your thought process, but it's flawed. A retreating jab allows for an immediate follow-up, usually a right cross after planting, whereas it would be difficult to quickly follow up a strike with this blade.
Except you're entirely wrong for a multitude of reasons.
1. My jab isn't like dropping a 45 lb plate directly downward into the ground.
2. It does not take a large amount of strength and effort to bring my jab back to guard my chin
3. A direct downward swing like this with a weapon this size cannot be instantly and effectively followed up with a successive series of attacks without greatly telegraphing i them via the complete transferal of bodyweight to control and move it.
If you wanted show off a sword equivalent of a jab, why not use a technique that literally uses the same principle like a thrust?
Probably cause moving a huge amount of weight away from your center of gravity makes it harder to control, and it doesn't attack the stationary bucket sitting on the ground at his feet.
@@abarainosa I never said its exactly like a step-back jab. I said it uses the same principles. You step back and let the gigantic hunk of metal lean forward, then as it leans you slam downwards in an axe-chop. Obviously theres massive differences in fighting with a 75lbs+ slab of iron compared to literally every sort of weapon.
Think about it like this, how the hell did people learn to use 11ft long glaives and 16ft long pikes? Theres obviously a massive learning curve and physical prerequisites you need to meet before even attempting to wield such weapons because of how unruly each of them are in their own respects.
We’re also not talking about just a regular sword, we’re talking hypotheticals about a massive hunk of raw iron and potential ways to use it in battle. Modern humans don’t train all their lives in blade combat anymore and so all we can do is speculate how to use it if someone were even able to use it.
@@jancarlosnatano885 Except that is still not what a step back jab is for. A jab in most uses is to judge distance and set up follow ups. It is a useful tool because it is low energy and low committal and it easily retrieved. Hence why I used the example of a thrust. Unless you are outrageously strong, there is only one direction that sword is going in once it begins moving down That is farther down, unless you use all of your body to stop its momentum and redirect it.
In fact if you watch correctly. He's not swinging it down. He's stepping out of the way, letting it fall and pushing it down once it's past a certain point. He's not stepping back to create distance. He's stepping back because he's letting the weight crash down. He is moving around the weapon, instead of making it move around him.
To your point about glaives and pikes, both had long shafts to grab them so you could better distribute the weight. Furthermore, a large sword like this with a much longer handle would probably be more useful and resemble that of the Zanbato from Rurouni Kenshin.
Although not as big, giant swords like this actually existed in medieval europe. They were more or less for breaking up up formations because they could cut or deflect spears and pound back shields. They people that used them were paid double or triple the average price because they were both more physically strong and needed more training and food, but also because they were targets for fast moving attackers and archers. I'd heard one guy specialized in dueling with that kind of sword, because people assumed he moved slowly. He just practiced doing a giant circle really fast and won most of his duels with that.
IAh yes, the age old Dark Souls debate. Dex vs Stregth. Never gets old.
Peasants: Too slow, it's too heavy to be practical...
Warrior: That's because you're a peasant. Should've chosen a warrior class.
And on that day, every member of the Buckethead Army fled before the might of the giant sword.
As a huge Berserk fanboy this video really gives me the tingles.
"That thing was far too big to be called a sword far to rough, far too heavy, far too thick, indeed it was heap of raw iron"
-straight out the berserk book
Bro is the type of guy to scream his Nemesis name really loud and kill demons and have a microscopic elf
Guts!!
GRIFFIIIIIIIITH!!!!!!
Ok, but here's the issue: you get one commited attack. Yeah, it's very difficult for them to block, but the massive end lag is gonna be a serious problem. You might be able to deter them entering your striking range but if you swing and miss, it's gonna be really tricky to stop them coming at you and hacking you to pieces, or just grabbing your giant sword seeing as it's now 40 lbs of steel buried in the ground with a really bad leverarm.
he got that item asylum looking dragonslayer sword
From the age of 4 years old Guts trained with swords the size and weight of his own body. So not only did he equivalently grow with his swords and get stronger to handle them, he essentially developed his own style of swordsmanship that other knights just can't handle. He's often counter balancing with his own body weight and able to use momentum to gain even more speed.
The dragon slayer
Motivation!
The wyrm slayer seeing how thin it is
the bucker slayer, also impressing
i love that sword, looks awesome.
But can you break a saber in half that is closing in rapidly and stop your sword just before hitting the enemys shoulder?
Lol. Maybe?
To be honest no one can.
But I do train with emphasis on control where I stop the slashes from smashing into the ground.
You can see examples from my Colossus Workout #1&2.
@@shootaman2 Zero. Only need to kiss them once. ;)
@@DigitallyTwistedOutlaws1178 Good luck. Let's see that!
There's a channel about swords and they tried this great sword against a regular sword. It's not easy to deal with this one. You can't even block it because the weight is enough to ruin you. Your best bet is to keep distance but then again if you're too far, you can't hit your target with just a regular sword.
@@shindenxxxx what’s the video, cause if it’s just a sword fan video and not people who actually understand all the factors then they are not really doing anyone justice.
Ork warboss - Who touched my knife?!!!
“Have I ever before wielded a sword so heavy?” -Guts.
you have one chance to hit them if you make a vertical swing, if you miss you die. the only time this is preferred to an proper sword is if your opponent has heavier armor, but at that point just use a mace
That's why everyone throughout history used giant swords.
Exactly!!
Then the Titans and Gods came and stole them for their battles!
Everyone throughout history was a starving peasants and you know the .1% of huge warriors carried bigger weapons
@@frozengoat5834even still, nothing comparable to the Dragonslayer was ever used.
You should study more HEMA and historical sword play. You'd be surprised how big some of those swords got. Looking at *you* 7ft Zweihänders 👀👀
@@OldBuggaboo Not really the point of what I'm doing. But I have discussed it with others.
Guts and cloud would be proud.
Imagine him spinning with that thing 💀
No, imagine him trying to stop spinning 🤣
