Watching real pilots fly and comment on DCS is always a treat. One suggestion, controls indication (Rctrl+Enter) would be nice. Rudder use during aerobatics is hard to pick up.
I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am that you made this video. Ever since I first laid eyes on a yak-52 I've been in love. Now to have sim model of it available and the opinion and remarks of someone who actually pilots one on top of it all. I truly am grateful.
Thank you for the video, it was indeed great! I just got my DCS Yak and I too was looking to hear that characteristic 'whine' of the air starter - hopefully they will get it sorted soon.
Gona have to get this at some point because of my love for radials, thanks for the great video, not everyday someone has experience from the actual real plane.
Thank you very much for showcasing this. Lctrl + numpad 1 can sometimes help. This disables ASW and can make it slightly harder to make out fine exterior details while in a turn, but it can help to eliminate the stutter.
Great insight! It appears that unrealistic wheel and flap drag is typical with ED's engine. Either that or they start with too much and back it off until it feels right.
Thanks a lot for sharing. Really great to hear a real Yak pilot's opinion while flying the sim Yak. Are the reflections on the propellor from the sun (17:38) seen on the real world version too? Great tip about using the roads to stay oriented, as a non-stunt pilot, I would never have thought of that, thanks.
Yes, even with the semi-matte finish the Yak, and most planes I fly, will have some reflections off the back of the prop, can be very annoying to almost disorienting
This Yak does have the gear pins, if you check my landing sequence I actually look at both wings and the nose for them, then call out 'pin, pin, pin, 3 green, air is good, fuel is good, cleared to land'
In short, for the gear position you have Up, Neutral and Down. The airplane uses a "bottle" of compressed air to move these systems (Instead of the usual hydraulics like in the western planes), so if you keep the gear in Up or Down, you will keep pushing on the gear thus reducing your air supply. If the air runs out you won't be able to brake or move the gear anymore (You have emergency brakes and gear ofcourse). On planes like the MiG-21 even the parachute is operated by that system, so you need to be very careful.
Amazing review, one of the best that I've seen! Thank you for that, sir. As soon the DCS release new updates could you bring us your opinion? I'm thinking buy this model to make some formation flights with a friend but any aircraft in DCS is very expensive for brazilian pilots due to the tax rate here and I'll only buy as soon as I have garanty that the model is near to the perfection. Thank you. Hope see more videos soon! :)
Totally fascinating to hear a type pilot comment on the sim type. Thanks. I am a bit puzzled over your concern for your HP air though, doesn't the aircraft have an onboard compressor? If not do you have to pump up your bottles before every flight?
Thanks for the video. When you say that the cockpit is well modelled (textures, etc), can you really observe this from VR, or are you saying it in general, observed from a high resolution desktop display? Cheers.
Settings are Textures, Terrain and Water High, Shadows Low, Cockpit Displays at 1024, Anisotropic Filtering at 16X, Global Illumination and Rain Drops On, with Pixel Density 1.7 in the Rift, the graphics experience is pretty good, it is a beautifully modeled cockpit in the Rift or in 4K, very accurate
Great video. I picked the Yak up hoping to get some General Aviation practice out of DCS World because X-Plane's flight model just feels *wrong* and I've been using the TF-51 because it feels more 'realistic'. Great to have feedback on this module from someone that actually owns the plane. I fly Cessna 172 and 182s primarily and while I know these planes are a bit higher performance (heh) the flight characteristics just feel like what I would expect in the real world whereas the X-Plane aircraft just feel ridiculous.
One suggestion for future videos -- maybe turn the sim sound down to 50% (or 50% of whatever you currently have it set to) so your voice is better distinguished from the simulator audio. Otherwise, great!
Regarding the volume levels, I'd suggest to increase the mic volume instead. I had to crank up volume on my end right through the roof to be able to understand anything just because the general volume is quite low on this video compared to other videos or basically anything.
If your looking for a good flight modelling. IL2 BOS has a great list of birds and the best flight modeling I've been able to find in a sim for prop driven birds.
I set the canvas in OBS to 4K then zoom the Mirror display to record a full screen which is about 1/3 to 1/2 of the total image n VR, seems to work OK but will be going back to 1440P I think to get FPS back for smoother replay
as for being 'nervous about an aircraft that took that long to start' you mention the magnetos are incorrect.....IRL an aircraft that "takes that takes that long to start" usually means the magneto switch is not engaged\on position. perhaps that is the issue, but what would I know, as I do not see you changing the magneto setting whilst the prop is winding over.
In the real airplane a 'shower of sparks' is engaged when you press the starter button and engage the pneumatic starter, the mag switch is only flipped to 1+2 once the engine is running, in DCS I have to set the switch to 1+2 before hitting the starter button since I don't have the mag switch mapped to HOTAS, the issue is more likely how the engine models fuel mixture, I am following my real world start procedure, the M-14P likes to be primed, my typical full start includes pulling 12 blades (mags off of course) to clear any oil in the bottom cylinders, then I will give it 3-4 shots of primer (wobble pump to the right), pull it through another 3 blades, and then follow the start procedure in this video - I may be 'flooding' the engine as far as DCS is concerned, I plan to fly the recommended procedure today and see it behaves better
Dunno if anyone else mentioned it, BUT:...Track-Ir-5 has a "SMOOTHNESS" slider underneath the "SENSITIVITY" slider, you turn it up to 50 and it allows you to keep your head from "bouncing up and down" and allows you to see how you would in Real life! ...IE: *STEADY*,...also turning your "sensitivity" within Track-ir down by like .2 at a time can allow you to get still "crisp" head movements by your pilot in the sim without being overly "SNAPPY"... it's almost dizzying and makes me wonder if you're using default settings on a TRACK-ir.3 or 4 or maybe even a VR Headset? still AMAZING VIDEO THOUGH SIR! Thanks for the awesome review!
hey man I don't know what you did but do not prime it so much just 3 pumps and you should have fuel pressure. then it will start after 3 or 4 prop turns. also looks like you did not fully open that starter valve ( forgot what it's called) in the far back left.
The main air valve is backed off a quarter turn from fully open in the real plane, and the start procedure I followed in this video is my exact procedure to start my real Yak. I have since adjusted to 4 strokes of cylinder prime (wobble pump to the right), followed by two strokes to the left to pressurize the fuel system, and then only open the throttle, not pump it, and it starts correctly other than incorrect throttle mapping and the graphics of the prop turning the wrong direction.
A plane taking time to start shouldnt be a concern. Radial engines are tricky and temperamental at the best of times, let alone in the vegas heat. Would never scrap a flight cuz of a botched start.
Very kool. Eagle Dynamics should really produce a series of videos of each module by real world pilots of each machine...
Oh yeah id love one of these vids on i16
Thank you for taking the time and putting this together.
Your input is greatly appreciated!
Watching real pilots fly and comment on DCS is always a treat. One suggestion, controls indication (Rctrl+Enter) would be nice. Rudder use during aerobatics is hard to pick up.
Ah! Who else did it, could you share a link? I love this type of video.
Fascinating to watch, thanks for taking the time to put this together, really enjoyed it.
Great video! thank you for sharing your time and thoughts. I live a couple miles from Henderson Executive. Always a treat to see it being used in DCS.
I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am that you made this video. Ever since I first laid eyes on a yak-52 I've been in love. Now to have sim model of it available and the opinion and remarks of someone who actually pilots one on top of it all. I truly am grateful.
Good cinematic video. I always seem to enjoy your stuff and your skins are very cool too. Thanks for putting in the time to do this.
Thank you for the video, it was indeed great! I just got my DCS Yak and I too was looking to hear that characteristic 'whine' of the air starter - hopefully they will get it sorted soon.
Great video thank you sir.... any chance you can make one just like this in your real yak-52? For comparison thanks
Check the description, its the 2nd link. "Link to sample start typical start in real Yak - ruclips.net/video/w4rN6O51gCI/видео.html"
This is really nice of you to fly the sim for us thanks.
Gona have to get this at some point because of my love for radials, thanks for the great video, not everyday someone has experience from the actual real plane.
Thank you for your review. It was pretty nice and congrats for flying/owning an Yak-52.
That was a great video! I hope Eagle Dyn listens to your critiques and implements the changes.
This is pure gold, thank you.
VKB MCG grip comes with brake lever. Absolutely love it.
Thank you very much for showcasing this. Lctrl + numpad 1 can sometimes help. This disables ASW and can make it slightly harder to make out fine exterior details while in a turn, but it can help to eliminate the stutter.
Really enjoyed this. Thank You
Well done Sir, thank you for your effort !
Thanks John. very informative
Thank you for the upload. Great info and analysis!
Thanks, very good to know. I think I'll get it now based on this.
It would be nice to get a CJ-6 on DCS... This video is great with the Yak and I'd bet it wouldn't take too much work to alter this mode to the CJ-6.
Great insight! It appears that unrealistic wheel and flap drag is typical with ED's engine. Either that or they start with too much and back it off until it feels right.
Nice video John, you have to find some one to get your personel aircraft skin made for you.
Great review, great flying!
You beat me to It John, I was just getting ready to ask how much Air you went through in the Start
How can someone dislike this?
Thanks a lot for sharing. Really great to hear a real Yak pilot's opinion while flying the sim Yak. Are the reflections on the propellor from the sun (17:38) seen on the real world version too? Yes, even with the semi-matte finish the Yak, and most planes I fly, will have some reflections off the back of the prop, can be very annoying to almost disorienting
great video thanks, one question, didn´t YAK like this one used to have a pin rising above the wing to show the landing gear was up?
This Yak does have the gear pins, if you check my landing sequence I actually look at both wings and the nose for them, then call out 'pin, pin, pin, 3 green, air is good, fuel is good, cleared to land'
oh, I see is actually the opposite ,the pins are up when the gear is down...GREAT VIDEO...!
Very nice!
Can you elaborate on the use of neutral position for gear and flaps? Thanks.
On planes like the MiG-21 even the parachute is operated by that system, so you need to be very careful.
Thank you for your cross-checking
Hope ED is aware of this video!
We need more guys like u would love to see some fixs for Mig15 and Su27 and f15
Hi, great video! After recent updates have any of the issues you have discussed been addressed?
Thanks
Amazing review, one of the best that I've seen! Thank you for that, sir. As soon the DCS release new updates could you bring us your opinion? Is this what Bud GRANLEY flys at airshows? Is this from the 1956 circa?
Totally fascinating to hear a type pilot comment on the sim type. Thanks.

Which cessnas did you use on X-Plane 11?
Which airplanes are you using in xplane? that's the big question.
Regarding the volume levels, I'd suggest to increase the mic volume instead. I had to crank up volume on my end right through the roof to be able to understand anything just because the general volume is quite low on this video compared to other videos or basically anything.

How do you record your VR point of view in full frame ?
I set the canvas in OBS to 4K then zoom the Mirror display to record a full screen which is about 1/3 to 1/2 of the total image n VR, seems to work OK but will be going back to 1440P I think to get FPS back for smoother replay
thank you ! I will try it
Thanks for the information :-)
Thanks: subscribed and I will order her.
How much does a mint condition Yak-52 go for these days?
a nice one like mine would be $65-75K, low end is $50K, very high end can be $100K - the Yak-52 great bang for the buck
how do you record at such a good quality using the rift?
Great review! Between do you use Oculus or HTC? Subscribed:)
It said he uses the Oculus in the video description.
your mic is coming across pretty nicely, are you using the inbuilt HMD mics?
Yes, that is the Oculus Rift mic, it seems to work very well
Стружка в масле, блеать!))) Awesome!
Right turning tendencies on a clockwise spinning prop/engine? Defies all I learned about torque. Is this modeled correctly?
the prop is turning the opposite direction of what it does in real life. He talks about it in the video
You own a yak pilot? What’s his name? Is he good?
You have my subscription that's for sure :D
3:25 where is your video?

The start and aerobatic video links are in my description, just hit 'Show More'

Super. Pozdrawiam:)
i'm a Strike Eagle owner too
as a guy who has flown yak-52s as well the trim is way off

I use Oculus Rift and move my head a lot in the sim and IRL when I fly my Yak, sorry...lol
John Knolla I would be happy to know how to record from my Rift like yours. Mine comes out portrait oriented and a bit fisheye.

yeah, though remember it is a WIP module so I HIGHLY suggest you send in a ticket or post this on ed forums so the devs know!
