Tip from a carpenter: when putting up walls, start by nailing studs to the bottom plate where you've got 16 on center marked. Then place your top plate at the other end with 16 on center marked. Much easier and faster than dropping them in like that. Also, nail your plywood sheathing on before you lift with a good 4 inches or more overhanging so it's along the deckbox. This way, when you lift, it's not going anywhere and it's easier to nail in place because you've got an edge overlapping the dockbox to register your wall against. The more you do while it's laying down, the easier it is. It almost hurts to watch you guys work, but it's evolving.

Well I think it depends a lot on the size, features and particular design of the home. A more standard wall foundation with a bigger footprint would not be quite as easy as this small footprint cabin. And that's not meant to deter you at all, just putting it into perspective.
It’s not as easy as it looks. Obviously these guys don’t know much about framing or carpentry. First the walls should be squared and sheeted before standing up. As it was they had one brace on a wall when the rafters were installed. I’m surprised the whole building didn’t collapse because of no sheer strength. I’ve seen it happen before. Second the door was an interior door installed inside out. You don’t have a secure door with the hinges on the outside. Doors always swing into the room. Third the walls only have a single plate therefore not connected with a second plate per code. The rafter blocks weren’t installed before the roof. The roof metal was put on sideways. It’s important that the roof doesn’t hold water and snow will slide off. This is impossible when the metal is on sideways. It’s plain for me to see this is going to look like 💩 compared to a professional job.
Mick, it's great that your parents are not helping you with your home build. This way you & your friends are not only making incredible life time memories but, you guys are learning great building skills. I would recommend anyone building a cabin to build the cabin off the ground by 5-6 feet so that you can use the underneath of the cabin as a great storage area. Make sure you inclose the bottom area for winter but, in the summer have some screened in air vents that will allow for the air to flow. This will prevent mildew in the upper cabin & storage area with it being off the ground especially, in hot humid climates. Good morning Mick. just trying to give you a little bit of advice on your door. Looks like you bought an interior door for an exterior use. That is basically a press paper door. Not sure if it was hollow or solid core. But I would give that DOOR plenty of coats of paint so it can weather the winter in Maine. Also, it’s not very good at keeping the cold out. Being that door does not have weatherstripping or the bottom sill with weatherstripping on it. It will be drafty. Also, I would recommend in the future swapping out those hinges for stainless steel. In about six months they are probably going to be rusted and dripping rust on the side of your shack. I have a bit of experience with those doors. I’ve sold thousands of them. I can tell you that door is probably going to swell on you in the wet weather. Paint all six sides of the door that means the bottom and the top on the edges and sides. That way you’ll keep the moisture out of the door and keep it from warping and swelling. framing looks great. T1-11 is great product. Also put a lot of paint on it . also, I recommend sealing the bottom edge of that plywood near in the ground. That edge will suck up moisture like a sponge and it will start to warp. Nail that bottom edge like every 6 inches with a galvanized. 6D nail. Other than that it’s a very sturdy look and structure 2 x 6 studs excellent choice. Great to put extra insulation in it. Good luck with the rest of your build.👍😀

I love watching this process. Looks like a ton of fun hanging out with the guys and building a home for yourself. It’s coming along fast! Just a quick safety tip around 7:05: you never want your cut to be between your sawhorses where the 2 boards could fall inward like that after the cut. The 2 boards can end up pinching the blade of your spinning saw when they collapse, which can cause your saw to kick back and injure you. Instead, make sure your cut is on the outside of your sawhorses, so that the board is fully supported after the cut is finished, and the part you cut off should fall cleanly off. Basically, you only want one side of the board to fall off after your cut. Hope that makes sense! I just don’t want anyone to lose a finger or worse 👍. Keep up the good work!
I was scared af when I saw one of them standing in the front of the circ saw WHILE IT WAS CUTTING. Holy smokes It's awesome that they're making things with their hands, its not common for people their age to be doing it, Good on them for it.
considering who his parents are, I am surprised over the lack of work and safety tips! Kids survive most the time, though. But I didn't know about not making a cut between the saw horses. Too bad they don't teach shop anymore.

I didn’t think I could do it either yet I still surprise myself on a daily basis. With Faith in yourself and the Big Guy Upstairs, anything is possible! Especially with all the access we have to research how to do it with amazing RUclipsrs like the Whipples. But it won’t be possible until you try. You can start with saving for that perfect piece of land. Good luck and God Bless!
@SHARKNADO_2006 his parents did it and that was years ago. I think it's important to get someone like-minded in your life like his parents were, if that's what you want. So much heartache and headache comes from rushing into getting married and settling down! Then the trap is set!!! Divorce can ruin all your dreams, if you had any. If you don't know your dreams and goals, pursue different things until 1 of them clicks in your soul. Give yourself time to get mentally and emotionally 'mature' . Sorry if it's TMI! Were you in on the build, or in on the beginning of the video series?? One thing I observed in my life is that we are what we attract, in some cases. I needed to be a better person, a healed, mature person, to attract better quality for me.
Great job young men! Mom and Dad got to be large proud! Looking forward to the continuing build-out! 👍🏻👍🏻 Edit: Time to cook some brauts and stuff on an open fire grill. What a great time! Remember the old 4H song, “Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold!”
Inspirational to see what you're trying to do here. Everyday now I'm finding my situation to be similar to yours. I'd like to pursue music, maybe it's time I start focusing on it. Here's to growing alongside you!
Always great having friends helping out. More fun / more enjoyable doing the work It's fun watching the progress. Makes it easier having your family's knowledge & experience Good going
Great job gentleman!! I have a question for you though…..shouldn’t the hinges be on the inside of the Cabin? Having a door knob locked would be good if it weren’t for the fact that a screwdriver and hammer could just knock the pins out of the hinges and just remove the door.
.... In bear county it's better to have the ext. door swing out .. the door stops beefed up to 1x2 ,, and latch ,, heavily secured ,,will hold a great deal more force than just a door latch ... When bears break in they stand and bounce on the door ,, swinging in ,, blows open easily ... as of yet ,, it has not been found that bears know how to remove a hinge pin .... Hopefully he won't have to deal with human predators and vermin ... (fingers crossed) ... might have to bring all the friends back out and have a "Security Party" ....
@@rockytopwrangler2069you make good points but this is a hollow interior door that a koala could break through so hinge placement and swing are a moot point
Looking good Mick , can't wait to see the finished product. It's great to have good friends like you have to help you. I was begining to think carpentry was a lost craft with the younger generation. Plan on raking lots of snow off of your roof with that shallow pitch it has , I'd hate to see it cave in on you.
Looking great! So wonderful seeing young people being so productive and doing something with their hands and having fun doing it! Thank you for sharing your adventures! ❤
nothing better to have a big project and have some nice friends to help and share te experience. Loving the videos. Hope you guys are ok.. Much love from Brazil.
Nice to see its going well. I'm kinda in the same situation as you, I'm 14 and really am tired of city life and school but places like this is where I'm happy, calm, and feel purpose. Hopefully by the time I'm 18 or 19 I can save up enough money to buy atleast a few acres land and build a cabin on it in alaska, and see where life takes me from there. Hope you're having a great summer! Cheers. Edit: by the way, don't forget to make a good ventilation system in your house. My dad does construction, and all the time does he have to deal with moldy roofs and other things, because the houses were built with a terrible system for ventilation.
Quick comment on the ventilation part, as much as regular ventilation is important. What you need above all else is ventilation between the steel roof and the insulation if you are using anything beside closed cell polyurethane insulation for the roof. You require that ventilation to make sure the insulation remains dry at all time. Even if your vapor barrier is perfect, there will always be humidity from anything happening inside that will find its way into the insulation, which at some point will condense and create mold and many other problems, especially if you are using glass wool insulation which will lose all its insulating properties the second it's wet. Hope that helps :)
Mick you are creating so many wonderful memories doing this build with your friends. Something you will remember all your lives. 25 or 30 years from now when you guys get together and all of your lives have evolved and moved on you will laugh and have so many good stories. 🔨 🪛

It’s so encouraging to see young people working hard towards a defined goal. As long as the tomfoolery doesn’t make things too unsafe (trips to the hospital are NEVER fun) there’s no harm in having fun, too. I was more than a little concerned about the stability of Ian’s ladder, but wouldn’t it have been poetic if Jacob had made it? You’ve got a great bunch of friends there, and I’m glad you’ve got some help.
Of course it’s too late now but since you did have the help I would have nailed the T111 siding on the walls before you set them in place. It would have made it easier too check them for square and is also easier than trying to nail them from the ground, 🤷♂️
Osha approved ladder was the perfect addition and dont worry with a wood stove and several cords of wood you should be fine but insulation would definitely help

Holy smokes
It's awesome that they're making things with their hands, its not common for people their age to be doing it, Good on them for it.
considering who his parents are, I am surprised over the lack of work and safety tips! Kids survive most the time, though. But I didn't know about not making a cut between the saw horses. Too bad they don't teach shop anymore.
Oops- Thx for the tip
I didn't know this either. Thanks for the tip!❤
"This is the most Calvin and Hobbes lookin ..." is the greatest line of the channel so far. That took me back to my childhood and I need more of it.
I loved ian's calvin and hobbs ladder! You should have kept it 🤣
I did that thing is awesome
We’re gonna use it more if I can help it
@@ianfuller2782so that last name is Fuller. Nice to know, and now you have a “credit” 😅
@@ToddAdams1234 this doesn’t count and I wanna say the end part

This is stuff you only read in books, love what you’re doing dude, keep it up
WOW !
Look what you all accomplished in such a short time !!!
The bond of friendship is so strong ! Surely you will be on their "build teams" , when their time comes...such a blessing for you all !!
Thank you for sharing ...be safe , well and successful !
Your friends will remember this forever, and I'm betting at least one will sort of follow in your footsteps.
In short, you made the world a better place without knowing you were doing so.
That's priceless.
Let's go boys.
Kid never heard of snow and roof slope. This channel might only last one winter.
He has learned a lot from his parents. I have faith in him knowing their in his corner.
Agree with the slop and direction of steel roof but he will learn.
Lets gooo
@@maryhall6584 he might die from his mistake. But we will see.
Write down as many memories from your time with your friends as you can. I'm 41 now and I find it so hard to recall all the shenanigans from my younger days. Very special! So excited for you !!!!!
ABSOLUTELY a pleasure to watch this process, banter, good times and work. Your home. Your voice is very clear and unique. Ever thought of being a "reader" for audio books etc? Radio work? You're a good man Mickey.
Friends & cabin building. Doesn’t get any better than that. Love that ladder! Thoroughly enjoyed watching this! Stay awesome Mick!!😁
What a great bunch of friends you have - great work! You have a beautiful speaking voice by the way. Loving your vlogs - best wishes from a pair of old grandparents in Australia 😊
What amazes me the most is that you are a young person and you managed to get other people your age to hangout and have fun with your project. This is how it should be. Friends my age (24) all bury their faces into their phones when we hangout. Always too tired to go do something fun, let alone build anything together. God bless you all.
Memories that'll last a lifetime right there. Kings,...and Queen, to you all.
Looking good guys! But I think your roofer could use a good pair of work gloves.😉
SO MANY FRIENDS U HAVE>>>
"This is already a friendship cabin and a safe anchorage for you and your friends ... the hearts of thousands of subs" peace & luv to you & all your friends / subscribers KEEP that ladder!!! your history in the making
Anticipating a great cabin finish.
So, I am SURE you know more about building than I do as I know NOTHING but.....shouldn't there be some plywood or something under the metal roofing? I really enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie. You are making such wonderful memories for your future. 🙂
I was thinking the same thing. More protection from snow and ice buildup? Not talking about the weight but how it latches on and builds up
@@robertavaughan8236 plus insulation, and humidity building causing mold issues etc.
lol well you got quite a bit done and it's a time you and your friends will always remember and hey you got that crooked ladder to remember it all lol great job
Glad to see the progress on your winter shelter. And the years of great memories created amongst you and your awesome friends. Good job guys!! 🤗
Nice to have true friends to count on. Those are the ones that last a lifetime.
You guys are certainly on your way to becoming good helpful carpenters to society, very much needed.
Is that roof going to be waterproof? i have 0 experience in building so Im genuinely concerned, i thought that typical housing projects used some sort of protective layer prior to putting the roof on.
Mick, the cabin is coming along great. You have wonderful friends, really. I'm glad they are helping you out. Winter will arrive soon, but I'm sure you'll have your cabin ready by then, God willing!!! 🙏 But if by any chance is not 💯 % finished, that's okay too. You are a very determined young man, little by little you'll have everything you have planned. God bless you, be safe dear heart.
So nice to have your friends helping out. Hopefully you folks got a first aid kit with betadine for any wounds. Also, good to wear safety glasses.
So young & yet you're all so skilled. Absolutely fantastic to see, kudos to you all. Mick, your channel is taking off like wildfire, if your buddies have their own accounts, let us know, we'll give them some love too!
I agree, Jax.
Reminds me of the song "I get by with a little help from my friends ". Thank you for the update and introduction to your friends. This was a lot of help not a little help.❤
Its looking great. Be safe
This was the last know footage of Ian Fuller before his disappearance. No one seems to know what happened. Legend has it on still cold winter nights you can still hear his voice howling.Check the snout of the McTurdle Glacier in 15 to 18 years. It's a Great Mystery.
I’ll be out and about haunting the wilderness
@@ianfuller2782 You are legendary!
I'm waiting to see if you are going to do an artistic flair on the cabin like your mom or keeping it old school like your dad. Your family is so inspiring! I know they are super proud of you. We are all cheering for you to live your dream!!! It's so nice to see a group of friends constructing a home together. What awesome memories you all are creating!!!
That Ian is a menace! Every good team needs one.
What an amazing bunch of friends! Hard work with some fun and getting your cabin built. So glad we get to come along for this journey, thanks!
A brick-layer friend of mine liked to say, "The work's not blessed until you bleed." So the work's been blessed now. Congratulations! 👍😊👍
I find you and I to be pretty similar. We're both spiteful of a world that mutilated the creativity of our generation, we're both wanting to escape from what they plan our future to be, and we're both the same age. I haven't done anything like this because it hasn't been proven to me that it is possible. You are slowly proving it. I am so glad I could be one of the people that was here from the very beginning.
Don't ever wait for somebody else to prove what's right for you in your heart.
Maybe you're meant to teach the people coming along after you.
@@mycabinlife1291 thanks man, your words mean much to me. I'll take time to think this over, of course, but I do think this is right.
@@SHARKNADO_2006 I gave you the same advice I would give my grandchildren. I'll be 58 years old in a couple of weeks so I've made plenty of mistakes and I'm willing to help people learn from mine LOL
You've got this :)
1st step is always the hardest.
Just do it, you won’t regret it! My only regret, as a 50y/o single woman, is that I didn’t do it at your age when I was still full of oodles of energy and pi$$ and vinegar, lol.
Edit: Time to cook some brauts and stuff on an open fire grill. What a great time! Remember the old 4H song, “Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold!”
Hi Mick 🤗 so nice your friends came to help you build your cabin - looking good 👍
Brest is spelled breast. Jus fyi 😂
😂🎉 I had tons of fun watching you and your friends build. Great job.
Inspirational to see what you're trying to do here. Everyday now I'm finding my situation to be similar to yours. I'd like to pursue music, maybe it's time I start focusing on it.
Here's to growing alongside you!
Stay focused boys mom's watching ! Lol 🤣
Always great having friends helping out. More fun / more enjoyable doing the work It's fun watching the progress. Makes it easier having your family's knowledge & experience Good going
What great hope these friends helping bring humanity back to life!
Good job guys. You have marvelous friends. Stay safe Mik. See ya next time.
Y'all are doing a really great job! Just one thing I want to point out though that is a interior door it won't hold up to the weather 🤔
Lord, help this build! Installing a door before the building is braced. Good one!
Looking good Mick , can't wait to see the finished product. It's great to have good friends like you have to help you. I was begining to think carpentry was a lost craft with the younger generation. Plan on raking lots of snow off of your roof with that shallow pitch it has , I'd hate to see it cave in on you.
great progress. it makes me smile to watch all of you work and also have some tom foolery.🌻🌻
Looking great! So wonderful seeing young people being so productive and doing something with their hands and having fun doing it! Thank you for sharing your adventures! ❤
I LOVE YOU!! Alaska + cabin you made yourself + freedom = happiness

So very interesting channel! - STAY HUMBLE, STAY ALIVE.
I swear this could be a series on Netflix. It's really amazing to watch this journey unfold!
I love the fact you guys listened to the red dead redemption building a house song that's brilliant 🤣
That's where friends are for, great job!!!
Your parents taught you well , I really enjoyed watching you and the boys build your cabin, can’t wait to see more
nothing better to have a big project and have some nice friends to help and share te experience. Loving the videos. Hope you guys are ok.. Much love from Brazil.
Mick and all that helped, God bless you all! It is looking great! I pray the Lord blesses and protects you all. ~John
This really makes me appreciate Surviving Ringworm. I know what you're doing here is incredibly hard work, but comparativly it seems like you're putting together legos.
Hello from north Carolina
I'm so PROUD of ALL of you being there for one another Great job EVERYONE🎉
Excellent examples of tomfoolery! 😊 Looks good!
Love watching all of you. Hope everyone has an up-to-date Tetanus shot. With that said, I could watch you build and interact for a much longer time. Your pathway to the cabin is so beautiful! Also, ingenious ladder! Just be so careful! Can’t wait for your next video.
Long time forester here. Gloves boys, Gloves. Great channel. Haven’t been this addicted to a channel in awhile. Thank you
It’s so encouraging to see young people working hard towards a defined goal.
Looks a fun project and what better than to share it with friends , the ladder was hilarious btw 😂
That is what it is all about. Glad your first cabin is built on good friendship. So encouraging to see this drive and friendship.
Throughly enjoying you and your friends on your adventure. Great bunch of people!
Of course it’s too late now but since you did have the help I would have nailed the T111 siding on the walls before you set them in place. It would have made it easier too check them for square and is also easier than trying to nail them from the ground, 🤷♂️
Love seeing friends help this makes such amazing memories for you all!
LOL you guys are true friends I'll resist on building tips this time but I'm glad you made your friend get off the ladder.
Hi there Mick you’ve definitely got friends for life, great team work with some fun thrown in, can’t wait to see your finished project.X💕🏴
You're out here living my dream, man. Awesome work and I'm excited to see where this goes.
Osha approved ladder was the perfect addition and dont worry with a wood stove and several cords of wood you should be fine but insulation would definitely help
Yeah, with no insulation+Alaska, you’re going to need SEVERAL cords of wood. S E V E R A L 😮
The amount of wood required full time to heat a cabin in an Alaska winter is . . .

Good morning from Utah! Congrats on what you have accomplished! From what I've seen in this video, and the 3.5 years of construction experience, it looks like you are doing a fabulous job on your cabin, and I can't wait to see this whole thing through.

You were having entirely too much fun for all that work. Proud of all of you. Good job!
Maybe I didn’t see but no headers above the doors and windows? And the roof there’s a reason you see high pitched roofs in the cold climates it’s gonna hold every inch of snow. I just pray it holds and I’m just an idiot 😂 love your videos comes from a place of concern
