Great reax! It's hard not to love 2112. Almost everyone's first impression is astonishment - I know mine was. Gets even heavier when you know the lyrics/story.
Probably the difference you hear in vocal performance is; this is Geddy's hard-rock voice, as opposed to a pop-rock voice. Same voice and range, different tone and timbre.
I've found those who love 2112 also love Cygnus-X1 from A Farewell To Kings.

Great guitarists add something to a song, where most guitarists will do their solo because the song just needs a solo right? Sometimes you find a guitarist that actually adds something special, and if you were to remove those parts from the song, it would be definitely lacking.

    • @putinontheblitz359
      @putinontheblitz359 3 года назад +2

Yes ...... you can hear him actually fighting to strike that balance especially on 2112. He is right on that razors edge. When they give him the room to breathe his solos are brilliantly melodic and expressive. When the odd and fast paced time signatures happen you can hear his early development of that choppy and chaotic style. I think it is in those sections where he is right on the edge of over doing it but by Moving Pictures he perfected it. Brilliant combination of rhythm and chaotic lead to keep things from going over the top........ that's a great point you brought up.

I'm a first timer for seeing you. There was a comment under this that said (to paraphrase), "I had a grin on my face the entire time watching your movements and reaction" . I was and still am very animated when I listen to great music acting much like you did during this. And no, it's not weird, it's awesome, it's freedom of expression. If I'm with 1 or some friends I'm the chill guy, however when I sit alone in my dusty old basement watching people cool like you and so into the music it often brings me to tears. (Anyone else ?) But they're tears of joy for your discovery and enthusiasm but also sadness because I'm 54 and don't get to do what you're doing anymore. In my teens it was a constant search to discover new music and when I did I reacted like you. Sadly there is no creative new music for the last 20 years for people to discover. By that I mean creative like the period between 1960 and 1980. That is just not gonna happen again. I thought your reaction was fabulous and it looks like you're well on your way to soundscape nirvana. Keep diggin and listen to older people regarding recommendations,we love pointing younger people into new musical avenues. Cheers from canada.

Glad you're getting into Rush. Drummer is Neil Peart "Peer-t". He's been touted as Rock's best drummer. Rush is just a three piece band but they can make such full sounds. The singer, Getty (Gary) Lee also plays keyboards, pedals, and Bass. Alex Lifeson is the sole guitarist. Playing rhythm and lead (with occasional pedals). Their progressiveness has spanned 50 years and they don't have a bad song (some are better than others). The early years are great, raw, rock influenced by Led Zeppelin (Albums like 2112, Fly By Night, and their original Rush). Their middle years slowly moved to more synth (albums like Signals, Grace Under Pressure, and Hold Your Fire) and their later years moved back and perfected traditional Prog Rock (albums like Test For Echo, and Clockwork Angels).
Such a great and talented trio!

    I. OVERTURE
The "sci-fi" sounds in the beginning of the song were created using an ARP Odyssey synthesizer and an Echoplex tape delay. On the "2112 / Moving Pictures" episode of the documentary series Classic Albums, producer Terry Brown states the synth intro is composed of various parts played by Hugh Syme that were put together in a collage. This part musically foreshadows the rest of the song - incorporating movements from "The Temples of Syrinx", "Presentation", "Oracle (The Dream)", and "Soliloquy" - as well as a guitar adaptation of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture. Its sole lyric, at the end, "And the meek shall inherit the Earth", is a reference to the Beatitudes of the New Testament and Psalm 37:11.
    II. THE TEMPLES OF SYRINX
The song introduces life within the "Solar Federation" under control of the "Priests of the Temples of Synrix". The computerized nature of The Priests' system was a concept envisioned by Neil Peart in the 1970s.
    III. DISCOVERY
The Protagonist finds a guitar in a cave by a waterfall. He figures out how to tune and play it, enabling him to make his own music. He states "How different it could be from the music of the Temples". He decides to perform it before the Priests, believing they will "praise my name" for letting "[the people] make their own music". In this song, guitarist Alex Lifeson builds up from simple open string guitar playing into increasingly complex patterns and chords, showing the man's progress as he teaches himself to play the guitar. Printed on the album were the lyrics "Chords that build high like a mountain" and Geddy sang it this way for the 1996 live album, but the original recorded lyrics were "sounds" instead of "chords" ("Sounds that build...").
    IV. PRESENTATION
The Protagonist performs before the Priests, but they tell him that "we have no need for ancient ways", and dismiss the instrument as a "silly whim" that "doesn't fit the plan". The Protagonist tries to explain, "our world could use this beauty ; just think what we might do". However, the Priests tell him, "Don't annoy us further". Vocalist/bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson alternately represent the Protagonist with gentle, low-pitched vocals and clean guitar, and the Priests with high-pitched vocals and distorted, hard rock guitar. The song ends with a guitar solo.
    V. ORACLE (THE DREAM)
The Protagonist "wanders home" and has a vision of the past and future. An oracle shows him the way it was before the Federation rose, a society where creativity and individuality flourished, with great "sculptured" works of beauty driven by "the pure spirit of man". He now sees that without these things, life has become "meaningless". He also sees "the hand of man arise with hungry mind and open eyes". The "elder race" was not destroyed, but "left our planets long ago", plotting to ultimately return "home to tear the Temples down".
    VI. SOLILOQUY
The protagonist returns to the cave and broods for "days". He imagines "what my life might be in a world like I have seen", and now considers life under the Federation "cold and empty", with his spirits "low in the depths of despair". He resolves that, in order to "pass into the world of my dream, and know peace at last", he must take his own life, his narrative ending as "my life blood spills over".
    VII. GRADNE FINALÉ
The song concludes with a hard rock instrumental part. Pingree's Music Reviews says, "2112 ends with the oppressive government being attacked by another entity, left entirely up to the listener's interpretation." On the Classic Albums episode on 2112 and Moving Pictures, Lee comments on the ambiguity of the ending, but Peart states that his intent was that the Elder Race successfully deposed the Solar Federation. As the Grand Finale ends, the lines "Attention all planets of the Solar Federation" followed by "We have assumed control" are spoken three times each.

Nice reaction video - and lovely to hear someone your age appreciate a real drummer. As someone who saw Rush perform this entire suite a couple of times, I can tell you it's amazing to hear live. And, as a drummer, I never tire of Neil's drumming on this album.

Can’t wait for you to read the lyrics and understand the story. It’s brilliant, and you will see just how well the music and vocals express the emotions of the characters. The intro felt like a bunch of songs because it’s a true overture, which in classical music introduces all the major themes in the later movements. Try to pick out which part is which next time you listen to it. Many people have a problem with Geddy’s voice because he is higher pitched, but as you can see from this piece he’s pretty versatile. Give it time - he’ll grow on you. Can’t wait for you to do Moving Pictures with your dad. Cheers!

Glad to see another person enjoying this epic song.
The bass is there throughout, but Geddy Lee has a very unique tone that blends super well in the mix. In Presentation you mentioned a point where you weren't sure if it was bass or guitar: it was bass!
The lyrics are a key part of the song. Say what you will about Neil's politics or inspiration (the song is very close to Anthem by Ayn Rand, but Neil insists it was coincidental and he credited her after the fact), it's a good story. The TL;DR:
    1. Overture: Musical elements of the remaining sections, as normal for an overture. The "meek shall inherit the earth".
    2. The Temples of Syrinx: In the world of the year 2112, the Priests of Syrinx control everything: art, expression, industry, everyone's lives. They claim this is for the best. "Oh what a nice contented world".
    3. Discovery: Our protagonist is introduced, as he finds an old Guitar in a cave behind a waterfall. He teaches himself to play, amazed at the power to create his own music. Inspired he resolves to tell the Priests about his discovery. "The priests praise my name on this night!".
    4. Presentation: Our protagonist shows the priests what he has found. They are... not impressed. "Don't annoy us further." "Just think about the average, what use have they for you?". The lower voices/"verses" are the protagonist, the high voice is the Priests. At the end, represented by the screaming guitar solo, they destroy the guitar and cast our protagonist out of the temple.
    5. Oracle, The Dream: Our protagonist, dejected, falls into a deep sleep. He has a vision/dream of an Oracle who shows him the wonder of the Elder Race (i.e. us today) and what they accomplished with their individual expression.
    6. Soliloquy: Dejected and depressed with his life now, the protagonist retreats to his cave. He commits suicide. "My lifeblood spills over."
    7. Grand Finale: More instrumental. The last line is the linchpin of the story: "attention all planets of the solar federation, we have assumed control". Is this the Priests announcing they have finally succeeded in stamping out all individuality, or the Elder Race coming back to destroy the Priests and liberate humanity? Neil leaned towards the latter, but it's yours to decide.
Definitely one of the pinacles of Rock music, showing what the genre could accomplish and what 3 very talented musicians could do.

Ready for your mind to be blown away. The Last two lines of the song hold a special meaning. A hidden gem so to speak. First line: "Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation" and then the second:. "We have assumed control". Both lines are repeated 3 times each. First line has 7 words the second has 4. Repeating them 3 times each you first get 3x7= 21 and then 3x4=12 or 2112
    Rest in Peace Professor!

Really pleased that you enjoyed this wonderful opus by Rush.
As others have said, they thought this was going to be their last album due to the previous one Caress Of Steel not doing so well, even the tour was a bit of a disaster (the album is great by the way... and without it they would never have made this).
They were recommended to right something more catchy and short so they did an album where side one was a conceptual piece based on the writings of Ayn Rand! It was a case of, "well if we only get one more shot lets go down doing what we want". As the lyrics remind us "let them make their own music" as our hero tries to convince the priests to listen and allow freedom!
I think once you get a chance to read the lyrics and surrounding story you will understand some of the other clever link ups musically. Oh and just in case you do read this, your homework is to work out the clever (well I think so) word play at the end which reinforces the theme/title! It shows also the attention to detail they put into construction that they thought of everything.
Again pleased you enjoyed it so much. (Oh and notice how Geddy utilises 2 different vocal styles/sounds between the words from the hero and those of the wicked priests!)

It's hard to convey how this music hit differently back in the 70s/80s when half of Europe was under authoritarian/communist rule. Basically, every country east of German and Italy were communist, all the way to the Bering Sea. Imagining yourself living in an authoritarian state wasn't difficult.
Music itself was much more important to us back in those days too - there was no internet, less than 10 channels on the television, etc.

Your on a great musical journey with the rock genre there and great to see. 2112 is an instrumental masterpiece and Geddy has a voice that could cut through steel. Maybe on this Rush island you've discovered, you may find Hemispheres. Personally a favourite and once again a concept album with a Greek mythological narrative. Worth a spin even if you don't review it as it contains the elements you've said you enjoy.

Kira, Rush was here in Brazil only once in 2002, and they recorded one of their live albums here at that time. They played this song, but only the intro. But the energy that Brazilians put into this show was something unique that not even the band expected to receive. I recommend it if you want to listen to the live version of 2112 recorded here in Brazil on the album "Rush In Rio". I was at the show in São Paulo and it was the show with the biggest audience in the band's history.
