What I don't like about the MT10 lineup is that none of the trims, even the SP, gets the same power numbers as its Super Sports siblings. For example the BMW M1000 is a 210 hp Super Naked, same with Ducati Street Fighter, same with Aprilia Tuono Factory. During my discussions with some riders here, the general agreement was if you want a Super Naked, get a Euro Super Naked
Nobody needs 200hp on the road. What yamaha did with the mt-10 engine is took some of that eccessive top end power and spread it all over the range. Having owned both aprilias v4 and the last gen mt10 among others, id say the mt10 is by far the best streetbike ive ever ridden. Reliability, sevicability and even build quality is superior to euros. Changing my Italian in for new mt10 in a couple of weeks and couldnt be happier
@BlackFlag714 from what I understand, the current MT10 has the 2015 Yamaha R1 CP4 engine albeit tuned for more torque lower down the rev range by implementing a heavier flywheel compared to the R1

Right now, I’m on an Aprilia RS660 and I must say, I love the bike besides missing a bit of power in the low range and I was looking for an upgrade for the next coming years; and I was hesitant at first, between the Aprilia Tuono 1100 and the MT10, but your quick yet detailed, well reasoned and thorough review made it clear that I’ll hop on the Japanese back 😅 🎌🏍️
Thank you for your feedback. Aprilia is a great brand making great bikes. But living in the US, I have a preference for Jap brands simply because of the ease of availability of parts and service departments compared to any other manufacturer.

Innaccurate to ever say it is "the same engine as the R1" you CAN say "built on same base PLATFORM as R1" It really is plenty significant difference it is NOT "the same engine as the R1" in a nutshell the R1 engine has a differnt lighter crank shaft different cam shafts TITANIUM valves and Titanium connecting rods, different throttle bodies I think and shorter velocity stacks plus obviously differnt fueling and ignition maps etc. There is a good reason why the R1 costs significantly more money! I think close to $5k perhaps? standard vs standard and even more SP vs R1M.....also note that although both the R1M and the 10SP have electronic Ohlins? NO they are not the same items... Too bad Yamaha did not give the SP EVERYTHING! THAT would be awesome! Of course i dont recon anyone wants to take an SP to 189mph! Damn wind would try to rip you off the bike! Well the drag of an upright rider would likely slow the bike down from ever reaching R1 top speeds even if an MT-10 varient DID have all the same engine bits!
That is pretty accurate actually. The MT10 is the same engine config. Parts numbers are different for a variety of things, some of which you evidently mention, which basically makes the R1 rev faster and harder and hence the power difference.
