I am very excited to get this bike. Have been riding a factory lowered 2012 f650 gs and wanted something bigger. Now this comes in at 825mm seat height, wich is just fine I guess. For this price I could not find a better bike to fit me. Many people are doubting this gamechanger here in europe. I wanna prove them wrong and enjoy this bike ;)

Great review Curtis. Good to see someone really testing a bike. Up here in Townsville i got to wait 1 month before i get mine the plan is mainly touring with gravel roads thrown in, and generally try to ride the wheels off it.
Good review as others have said. Had this all been a few months ago, I may have just bought this and not the KLR650 I got instead. Looking to swap the KLR out now, & the 800 is looking the goods. Cheers.
I know exactly where you are riding being a Brissie boy, and to be truthful that is about as gnarly as it gets. I think the 800MT held up its end admirably to be honest, with only a few times blew through the stroke and upset the bike. I would put this a class above the KLR650 in the dirt and light years ahead on the road. I can see clearly the KTM DNA passed down with that sublime 790 motor and box. I truly think CFMoto are on a winner here with this as an off-road tourer and Adventure bike rather than an enduro - which is exactly the market it was aimed at!
Excellent review. Much harsher off road than I would dare to try my luck on and this bike can handle it. I ride Tracer 900 GT and adore that triple howl and induction noise and this KTM twin sounds awesome and punchy, pretty close to that triple. Can't wait to see your next little adventure mate. Greetings from New Zealand.
Great review mate and a hell of a ride on an unfamiliar bike, you're certainly not worried to give anything a red hot go!! Good to meet you also the other day.
G'day mate I have one put aftermarket pipe on with a set of motoz rallyz front and rear crash bars, have a bit of a fueling issue at about 1/4 throttle but other than that it goes quite hard awesome review mate.
@@onthebackwheel can't get anything done here in town with the mapping rallyz are a extremely grippy tyre hold the road well any type of terrain there a bit noisy on the tar but overall a good tyre I'm 5 foot 4 and the bike is easy to manage, any info for mapping would be appreciated if you know of anyone I live in brokenhill cheers
I'm thinking of buying the limited edition tourer version so this review is of value. It is an adventure bike not a trail bike so the suspension travel shouldn't be an issue if your main objective is less trail bashing. I wonder how it would go with 35kg in the packs? 👍
Proper review mate👍. I’d be wary about some of the ktm-like electronic issues which might put me off buying one. Fluffy fuelling (if I got that right?) low down and a tall first gear is off putting but not a deal breaker. Great package for their first attempt though and real challenger to KTM, the Husky Nord and BMW. Can see it doing well. Surprisingly weighty for a 790 at 220 kilos. Great off road by the looks of it. Would love to see a comparison with the new Transalp.
They are a good thing. Apparently with a couple of mapping updates they are pretty spot on. Very keen to get my hands on a Transalp. Might buy one at the end of the year, we'll see
Probable the best test I have seen of one of these bikes by a long way..... would hve loved to have seen comments on fuel consumption and also how quick the temps recovered when getting hot... but otherwise well done.
Fantastic review and ride in the nasty stuff. I just bought one an i don't really want to get that technical. But I see it can do it. Of course most of the success is due to your abilities. Thank you for doing this.
Very nice review, I don’t plan on taking my bike on nasty dirt roads, but service roads in the woods, probably, but knowing it can handle it is what makes this bike so damn good. I keep telling people that the Japanese bikes took a verbal beating when they came out and now they rule the world, the Chinese are masters of taking what works from everyone else and copying it to theirs, and making it cheaper.
I've looked into the CFMoto bikes and ATV's, and what has been shown to me is their company has some good sales presentations, and they offer lots of factory perks. But in reality, their products don't compete with Japanese bikes and don't hold up as well. They look good, I agree with you. But I just am one of those who are leary of anything made in China. For durability, my KLR has been proven a bulletproof design. 35+ years in production, it's undeniable.
With the money saved on this, one could go full beans on suspension and possibly give it a bit more travel, or maximize what it's got. I wonder if they're coming stateside with that bike?
Hey mate, can you do a review on the new Explore edition with the rider modes and traction control included as well as other tech stuff! You do top reviews!
HAHAHA what first ride on whats supposed to be a NOT QUITE SO OFFROAD CAPABLE ADV TOURER :)) the track you rode really convinced me that this bike is capable enough. So for the price of a Tenere Rallye I could get a comfy 90 hp ADV Tourer that heats my butt and has cruise and quickshift AND it can also take me up and down bumpy muddy dirt roads .. *thumps up*
I must say that I did visit CFMoto and the quality I found was better than some other good and expensive brands. Just one concern of after sales service, I think this will not be a problem as they were dealing professionally.
Nice review, looks like you can turn off the ABS by pressing the red button on the right, restart the bike to turn it on again, where are those tracks where you were with KTM at the beginning, looks like a good spot
I wonder with some KTM WP forks or just some good springs, fork oil and new valving it could do a little bit better offroad. But it was made for those back fire road tracks. Still held up real well. I test road on the other day, only on tarmac. Still loved it.
i have experienced the shifter problem you did, mines a 2023 brand new .. i have to be very deliberate in my shifts otherwise it finds a weird spot between 4 and 5 mine does not have a quickshift cancel when i use the clutch, so even if i use the clutch, if i tickle the shifter to downshift the rpm still rises even with the clutch pulled in , there should be a clutch cancel for the quickshifter feature. im coming from sportbikes, currently a panigale v4, im a 50 year old sport biker but my back started to complain so i wanted something a bit more comfortable and it most definitely is that,, its a dream on the road.. i have gone to a 42T rear sprocket . and it still has enough grunt for what it us.. but the smaller rear sprocket exposed the super lean tuning up to 5k rpm or so.. ive done an air filter, cat link pipe and exhaust, nothing loud at all though i use the db killer as well. i feel these bikes should be a bit on quiet side especially with the places we llike to explore, partks etc etc, where quiet is appreciated..a loud exhaust i annoying as hell .. after a remap the torque down low is back and the extra 3 or so hp have made it feel about like it did with the 45t rear sprocket.. (and i get better gas mileage, dropped about 375-400 rpm off the 75mph cruise)and has tamed the super sensitive throttle down low... my only real complaint was the super snatchy throttle.. it is now more managle and smoother down low..i also made a new throttle return spring with thicker wire to add more tension to the throttle, i felt it was too easy to turn. the smaller rear sprocket made 1st gear more useable but 2nd is the most versatile while trekking offroad as you said. i really appreciate this bikes ability to carve the curves, up to the point where it drags centerstand, thats the limit, i have to say it looks impressive at full lean sitting upright in the seat LOLOL .. its enough to more than hang with the experienced sport bikers in the curves and pull away from the timid ones , they hate that LOL... of course when the road straightens out they wave goodbye. the abs works well in the straight and in the lean ive found... but i installed a rear abs shutoff for offroad.. i wish it would have come with a fully adjustable rear shock but we dont pay enough for such things on this bike. if my offroading progresses to that point i will upgrade the shock and respring the whole thing but at 190 pounds and the springs are close for me not right but close .. the suspension travel is not great. but its sufficient for what i will be doing..the mcu error has been fixed . i have gone to galfer HH compound pads and the brakes are waaayyyyy better, im really loving this bike , i cant wait to get it done and take my first trip if the quickshifter craps the bed i will just remove it, i prefer as analog as possible, nice thrashing sir, gives me a good idea of what it can take, happy riding
@onthebackwheel also id like to mention that when im coasting at idle in ...say 2nd and i inadvertantly touch the shifter but not enough to actually downshift it lurches forward but still in second when it blips the throttle thinking i wanted a downshift..its super sketchy if your not paying attention...when riding at higher speeds and downshifting its not a real problem..but it reslly needs work..compared to my v4s qs this is downright sketchy..and i dont see them fixing it..i will likely remove it and m a ke it analog clutch..
Hi from British Columbia Canada!. Just wondering about the MCU not working and temperature issue you mention happening in the video as I had the very same message and the temp gauge was way up, yet it was not hot weather and not canning the bike. You mentioned you would look into it. Did you find out what the issue was? Great video BTW, and yeah, way harder ride that my skills could handle.
I asked them about it when I gave the bike back, they weren't sure at the time but said they'd look into it. I asked some owners and they'd never had the problem 🤷
What a breath of fresh air you are mate. Loved your review. All important stuff was covered and, as a bonus, we actually get to see an offroad trail as well. Also, low seat position is really helpful to mention, specially for a dude like myself, who's 193cm. I'm not a pro rider, by any standard, but really understood all of your points, good and bad, about this bike. It's a great bike. Curious what you think though, this bike goes for 11000 euro vs bmw f850gs for 13400euro (standard gear, with a similar spec to match 800mt adds up to over 15000 euro)? Question is, does the 850gs, standard option set, provides a better riding experience or not (for a 70% road, 30% offroad rider)?
Cheers mate. Ultimately the 850 is a bit more capable with more suspension travel. Depends on the riding you are doing too though. If it's light off road and you arent going crazy, probably won't be a lot of difference TBH. Look at the vstrom 800de too. I just bought one and in a similar category
@@onthebackwheel Tnx mate. Will try to get them both on a test ride, which should help decide if splashing a ton more makes sense, really... I doubt it, but wanted to hear other opinions, especially from the more experienced riders.
Great review! Great riding! Great video! Im from the Netherlands and we dont have roads like this here but still i want this bike! looking for adventure! is this video taken in Australia? get me a ticket!! Cheers.
@onthebackwheel yeah mint! We often ride Mt.mee on the road bikes, flagstone/glassy/beerburrum and so on on the dirt bikes, very interested in the adventure side of things and I think your review has just made my mind up for me
Hi ! Did it in rain or sport mode ? My first offroad track on the Mt800 I did it in rain and was al little better than sport (to torky) The only a bad thing for me is that my tires are road so...A little bit harder 😖 And yes, absolutely agreed with the fuelling issue. After the firmware upgrade it is a little bit better but still bad The gearbox is that from KTM, same issue on the Adv 790/890 Yes, the quickshifter sometimes in harsh conditions get stuck and you have to "restart" the bike (I only use it on street or highway, on offroad you have to change gears manually)
can you share what brand of microphone you were using? Fairly good on speech plus could also hear your breathing and pantings, lol. plus is it blue tooth capable and be use for a two way communication unit if i were to have a pillion behind?
I've recently changed to a Rode Go. I would have used that or my old computer microphone with a dead cat. Happy with the quality of the Rode, still trying to keep wind noise down
awesome review, thank you.. wondering, for anyone reading, would this be a suitable bike for 85% normal road riding (commute and weekend blats through the twisties), 10% touring, 5% dirt?
Hi Curtis That was a great review - you are obviously an experienced dirt bike rider. I have ridden on road for last 20 years (currently 2007 BMW K1200gt) - and I am just south of 60yo - all the other guys have now gone to the big adventure bikes and want to ride some dirt roads and good trails - not the hard stuff you did! At 5ft 8in the big adventure bikes are just too tall for me. My K1200gt is a great tourer but not good the dirt I sometimes think the bigger bikes have a lot more power that is mostly unusable but then they do have comfort I had a Ninja 1000sx a few years back - more performance than I needed - but it was a bit tiresome for long touring. Next year I was hoping to do a solo lap of Oz - do you think the new 800 MT Explorer would be enough bike (mostly bitumen and some dirt)? Once again - great review. .
G'day mate. Thankyou. Yes it would be perfect for basic off-roading and mainly bitumen. I believe a few people have done that already. Honda Transalp could be a good choice too, have to see
Hi! Love your videos. I know this video was made a year ago but i just bought a 2023 Ibex 800 MT and i would like to ride it just like you did off road. I also know a KTM 890 Adventure R would have been better but the Ibex was the bike i wanted loll. I ride mostly 70% road and 30% off road (this is why the Ibex came to my mind) but when i am off road, i like fire roads and BDR's, rocky hill climbs and washouts, etc... I'm 6'ft and 230 lbs. With your experience with the Ibex, what would be the best suspension settings front and rear for this kind of off road you did? Would a different front spring rate is necessary? Again, i know this is not the right bike for this but like you said, it did good despite the fact that she was not in her element. Thank you
Looks like a good bike for the money. I saw the bike in person and it looks to be good quality. Positively suprised. You took that bike places the next owner will never do🤣 If only it was not built/owned in China...
They don't feel too heavy, definitely a big bike but manageable. I liked the engine, bit soft off bottom due to fueling but that appears to be fixed now
@@onthebackwheel Thanks my bike is a 2017 standard Africa twin so that’s why I was wondering how it compared Does it feel much more torquey than the Tuareg or noticeably more top heavy? Does it handle twisty roads any better than the Tuareg?

i really appreciate this bikes ability to carve the curves, up to the point where it drags centerstand, thats the limit, i have to say it looks impressive at full lean sitting upright in the seat LOLOL .. its enough to more than hang with the experienced sport bikers in the curves and pull away from the timid ones , they hate that LOL... of course when the road straightens out they wave goodbye. the abs works well in the straight and in the lean ive found... but i installed a rear abs shutoff for offroad.. i wish it would have come with a fully adjustable rear shock but we dont pay enough for such things on this bike. if my offroading progresses to that point i will upgrade the shock and respring the whole thing but at 190 pounds and the springs are close for me not right but close .. the suspension travel is not great. but its sufficient for what i will be doing..the mcu error has been fixed . i have gone to galfer HH compound pads and the brakes are waaayyyyy better,
im really loving this bike , i cant wait to get it done and take my first trip
if the quickshifter craps the bed i will just remove it, i prefer as analog as possible,
nice thrashing sir, gives me a good idea of what it can take, happy riding
Sounds like you've got her set up nicely mate. Good to hear you're liking it too and I'm not crazy with the quick shifter
@onthebackwheel also id like to mention that when im coasting at idle in ...say 2nd and i inadvertantly touch the shifter but not enough to actually downshift it lurches forward but still in second when it blips the throttle thinking i wanted a downshift..its super sketchy if your not paying attention...when riding at higher speeds and downshifting its not a real problem..but it reslly needs work..compared to my v4s qs this is downright sketchy..and i dont see them fixing it..i will likely remove it and m a ke it analog clutch..
a great revue well done its the best I've seen
Thanks mate, appreciate it
Hi from British Columbia Canada!.
Love the POV ride thanks!
Thanks!
It's a fantastic review! Well done!
Great Review of the Bike and its capability's ,? Is that D 'Agauliar NP . you travelled thru. Looks great
Yes mate, thats my local haunt. Some good ADV riding in there
Wow, what a proper thrashing of this bike! You have some good skills 👍 some parts it looks like your hanging onto a bucking Bull 🐂
She gets loose for sure!
@@onthebackwheel
Tnx mate. Will try to get them both on a test ride, which should help decide if splashing a ton more makes sense, really... I doubt it, but wanted to hear other opinions, especially from the more experienced riders.
What tyres are you running on the bike?
Fantastic review!
Making those trails look easy.
Thanks
Tkc80's. Good performing tyres
Looks good for up in Canada .this bike does thanks well done
Nice bikes
thanks m8ty,good stuff, funny that off road gearbox issue, and you say it didnt play up again aye?
Cheers. Nah it kept playing up the rest of the time I had it
@@onthebackwheel so maybe there not as GD as they say, many thanks
@@steveelliott5643 I still liked it. I spoke to a few owners who haven't had any issues with it, time will tell though I guess
Great review! Great riding! Great video! Im from the Netherlands and we dont have roads like this here but still i want this bike! looking for adventure! is this video taken in Australia? get me a ticket!! Cheers.
Thanks mate. Yes, this is half an hour from my house near Brisbane, Australia
I'd love to know where this is, will be adventuring myself soon, on the same bike in the same region
Daguilar state forest. It's at the back of Mt Mee
@onthebackwheel yeah mint! We often ride Mt.mee on the road bikes, flagstone/glassy/beerburrum and so on on the dirt bikes, very interested in the adventure side of things and I think your review has just made my mind up for me
Wow, if you’re going to do a first ride impression, that’s the way you do it.
Glad you liked it mate
Great content!! 😀Have you solved with that MCU error? What was that?
Thanks! I never found out, never got it again either though

Hi ! Did it in rain or sport mode ? My first offroad track on the Mt800 I did it in rain and was al little better than sport (to torky)
The only a bad thing for me is that my tires are road so...A little bit harder 😖
And yes, absolutely agreed with the fuelling issue. After the firmware upgrade it is a little bit better but still bad
The gearbox is that from KTM, same issue on the Adv 790/890
Yes, the quickshifter sometimes in harsh conditions get stuck and you have to "restart" the bike (I only use it on street or highway, on offroad you have to change gears manually)
I tried both and just kept it in sport. A tyre change is definitely needed for any decent off-road riding!
Ok ! Thanks for the info ! Will be changing tires soon I hope. Cheers !@@onthebackwheel
can you share what brand of microphone you were using? Fairly good on speech plus could also hear your breathing and pantings, lol.
plus is it blue tooth capable and be use for a two way communication unit if i were to have a pillion behind?
I've recently changed to a Rode Go. I would have used that or my old computer microphone with a dead cat. Happy with the quality of the Rode, still trying to keep wind noise down
@@onthebackwheel do you have the link that i could purchase it online? Does it come with a bluetooth devise as well?

Thanks for the info.
great review mate
Thanks 👊
awesome review, thank you.. wondering, for anyone reading, would this be a suitable bike for 85% normal road riding (commute and weekend blats through the twisties), 10% touring, 5% dirt?
Imo sounds like it will be perfect for you. Anyone else?
Nice review, thanks. How does it compare to your klr 650 on the highway, in twisties and off road?
The MT a better bike all-round TBH. Much better on the highway and better on the twisties. Off road the KLR is better for sure
@@onthebackwheel What about reliability?
@@johnk9290 I can't see it being like a KLR in that regard, it's reliability is legendary. I'm hearing good things from owners though
@@onthebackwheel mcu error? What ever happened regarding that?
6 inches of suspension travel, 19 inch front tire, 7.4 inches ground clearance, 500 lbs. I think I'll pass. In its favor it does say TOURING not ADV.
Its pretty handy off road. But yes, definitely more touring
Bro! Let us short kings have an adventure bike we can actually fit on! Haha
It's a big girl this one! There are a few good options out there nowadays, V-Strom 800 and Tuareg come to mind
@@onthebackwheel I want to take one for a test ride regardless. I’m currently riding a BMW R1100RT so this will be smaller, weight wise at least.
Hi Curtis, could you see yourself buying one of these in the future, maybe the 2022/2023 model?
Yeah for sure, it's a good bike
Hi Curtis
That was a great review - you are obviously an experienced dirt bike rider.
My K1200gt is a great tourer but not good the dirt
I sometimes think the bigger bikes have a lot more power that is mostly unusable but then they do have comfort
I had a Ninja 1000sx a few years back - more performance than I needed - but it was a bit tiresome for long touring.
Honda Transalp could be a good choice too, have to see
excellent review, thank you
Thanks mate
hi! Did you had shimming event while riding fast with topcase or trio on?
Hi, I didnt ride with any cases sorry
Bloody great review.
Thanks
That real test wow
Had a good time on this one 😁
Thank you
Hi there, now that is testing the memory. I'd have to look back at my review to see what I settled on
How did you find the TKC 80s on the Tarmac for noise and vibration?
So far really good. When you take off its noticeable they are pretty well nobbies, but once you get going they seem good
Tkc80 must be toast real quick with an engine like this
Yep. Got a follow up vid to do on that
It is the best review. Is it tubeless?
Cheers. Yes it is

Anyone think this bike will eat the cam like the 790?
So non switchable ABS? You can’t back the rear in at all?
Nope, it's always on 😬
That quick shifter has the same problems on the KTM.
You aren't the first person to say this

How too heavy does it feel and does it have good torque down low?
They don't feel too heavy, definitely a big bike but manageable. I liked the engine, bit soft off bottom due to fueling but that appears to be fixed now
@@onthebackwheel does it feel much less too heavy than a standard Africa twin or much less torquey I wonder?
@@IAmYourReflection definitely less torquey, especially the 1100 Africa twin
@@onthebackwheel Thanks my bike is a 2017 standard Africa twin so that’s why I was wondering how it compared
Does it feel much more torquey than the Tuareg or noticeably more top heavy? Does it handle twisty roads any better than the Tuareg?
@@IAmYourReflection I wouldn't change from a Africa Twin to the 800MT. Bit of a downgrade TBH. The Tuareg handles better than both and it more capable off-road, my favorite ADV bike atm
What about real consumption?
I can't remember off the top of my head. Would have to check my review, I may have mentioned it there
