Weather : When camping in Texas, with or without a forecast, ALWAYS bring shorts & tees and jeans & a winter jacket. The weather can go from 72 degrees to 32 degrees, in a heartbeat.
Ain’t it the truth! My kids argue that it’s hot and get mad when I make them take a jacket but then they’re glad I made them take one. You just never know lol
Yessss omg lol there’s one beach I love to camp at it’ll be 80 something during the day 50-60 at night. I love that place ❤ but I hate when it randomly rains when the forecast didn’t call for it lol
Lol not for our Christmas camp out. Every time it’s always been colder than forecasted! It was supposed to be 33 … woke up in the morning and it’s 25! It snowed one year… wasn’t expecting that at all! Could have lived without the 25 mph wind though that was almost scary to paddle back in. The good news about car camping is that you always have access to Walmart as long as you catch it in time
Well...they are significantly less attracted to red light but not completely...due to a different wave length used apparently. Ide also have a thermacell running.
Oh my... it's end of Nov. (we do NOT winter camp), as seniors we started camping once again this past summer and we ❤ u2 and all ur tips u have to share!) Watching u2 makes me look forward to this coming camping season! Thx for sharing ur knowledge and experiences... it helps so much!
Number 7! Last time I went camping with my niece, we used a tarp under our tent thinking it would help with the rain. Little did I know, you need to overlap it! 😂 After a day of rain, our tent felt like a water mattress when we stepped inside. We ended up sleeping in the car. I thought it was just the wrong campground, but after watching this video, I realized the mistake was not overlapping the tarp. Mind blown 🤯 and jaw dropped! I’m going camping again soon, and it might rain. I was worried, but now, I’m so glad I saw this video! Perfect timing! Thanks for the great tips!
Ahhhhh man that’s no fun! 😕 Haha hey 90% of this is trial and error that’s just how you learn 🤷🏻♂️😁 Really happy the video gave you a few ideas and hope they help you next time you’re out there! Thanks for watching! Hope you have fun on the next trip! 🏕️😊🤙🏽
After I tighten the guy lines, the tent occasionally shifts. I'll walk around and fold the tarp under 2 or 3 inches in from the edge of the tent. Heavy rain can track under the tent's bucket floor. For added protection if any condensation runs down the inside walls, I use a picnic blanket that folds into it's own package with stakes. One side of it is comfy flannel and the bottom is water resistant. It also keeps my sleep mat from sliding around and if it gets cold I can wrap it over me like a taco shell.
We were meeting family, all traveling long distances, to camp together. My brother-in-law forgot his tent poles! He had a canvas tent and managed to use rope to string it up to trees. Years ago, we were camping at Crater Lake. There were signs posted everywhere and rangers went around warning campers to not leave food out. The next morning, the people in the site next to ours were upset because a bear got into the food they'd left out on their picnic table! My husband heard the bear; I slept through it, thankfully.
I've been slowly collecting new gear for camping, but haven't gone since I was a kid. Really looking forward to it but watching a ton of yours and others' videos on RUclips has given me a TON of insight about what NOT to do when camping. Much appreciated! Subbed.
We found small ceiling fans that connect together and work on 1 rechargeable power pack.. they are lite weight and a great addition when it's hot at night.. a very small thing but comfort for sleeping makes it sooo much better.. we tent camp when I'm having a good week.. I have serious health issues that sometimes makes it impossible to tent camp.. my other half is amazing.. after my diagnosis he traded his brand new toyhauler and bought us a diesel pusher so I can do long road trips..when life throws a curveball you figure it out..Yes we still tent camp from time too time.. we camp and glamp...lol CANT SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF AND EVERYTHING IS THE SMALL STUFF ❤
Yes! Bins!! I carry three small gasketed totes. One is kitchen, one is shower and one is dishwashing/clothes washing kits. I actually have two kitchen bins. One is if I have access to electricity (electric skillet, kettle, kuerig) and the other is if I don’t (butane, titanium cookware, pour over coffee). If at any time I will be traveling with no electric access, I only take the no electricity tote. Both totes are redundant as far as cutlery, plates etc. The three totes fit in my front seats when I’m not driving or I put them in my toss up tent which I only use for storage. Love my bins!!
Thanks! Great reminders!!. Another item my wife and I added was a checklist to make sure every item that we might take depending on weather and such we were sure we had actually packed. Imagine this conversation: Husband, " I thought you put that back in the bin" Wife, " No, I heard you say you were going to clean it first and then put it back." 😱
Hahahaha that’s funny. 👊🏽😁 Always great to have the old packing checklist going for sure! Having the inventory of your bins, and then running down that checklist for everything else is a great great way to make sure you have everything you wanted to bring. We do that packing for any trip not just camping! 😊🤙🏽 Good stuff.
Your first tip is the number one thing all campers should do. Check all of your new gear before you head out! I learned my lesson many years ago with an instant tent. Got to camp, unpacked the new instant tent and started setting it up when it started pouring. Hurried to try and get it set up only to find that two of the poles were installed backwards from the factory. The knuckles were facing the wrong direction. Had to find a screw driver and disassemble the 2 poles in the driving rain and reassemble them to get the tent up. It totally sucked! ALWAYS CHECK YOUR GEAR ESPECIALLY NEW GEAR BEFORE HEADING OUT!!!
Thanks! Hope they help you out. 👊🏽☺️ And sweet! 😃 The bins really really help, and just writing up a checklist ahead of time and checking things off the list as you pack should keep you from forgetting anything. Hope you have a fun! 😊🤙🏽
Another scout leader left out a closed jar of peanut butter and we came back from kayaking all morning and it had been chewed open. There were the tell tale claw marks of racoons in the PB. Yup. Never leave food out.
I get a campground map of the place I am thinking about going and I pay the day use fee to drive around with a co-pilot to take notes. Mark on the map with highlighters of different colors the most desirable campsites (green) and the medium ones (yellow) and the least ( orange) then I eat my picnic lunch, take a nice walk. Go home and tidy up my notes. Then I have a "top ten" list for when I am ready to make reservations.
I don't use a lock but I do use a small carabiner on the inside at night when Im sleeping. I use an outdoor living space for hanging out and cooking when it's wet and I zip tie them shut at night or when I'm away from camp.
I use an IKEA blue bag for all my soft stuff like sleeping bags, pillows, mattresses etc. It has backpack straps which makes it easy to carry. I use a plastic tub (“bin”) for all my other stuff (kitchen etc) and the only other thing I carry is my tent and a bag of food.

Hi Richie and Jamie, thank you for sharing with us your experiences. I find very interesting and very useful tips either hiking or camping. Your sharing videos are very helpful for those who's like outdoor activities. Which's why I chose subscribed your channel.
Great video with a lot of great info! I have seen people camping that decided to leave their coolers out on the picnic tables, BAD mistake! Here in the south you will wake up to a family of raccoons having a feast. Fun to watch if it’s not your cooler! Cheers and safe travels
If going for a long camping trip far into the woods check the phase of the moon, no moon no light after sunset. also use good rebar tent stakes & know at what angle to put them in the ground. If you get lost STOP moving & take a whistle with you, yelling for help gets old fast.
Most of my camping is on sandbars along the river. All my gear fits inside one medium tote. But I also take minimal gear because it's in the kayak or canoe.
I've burned anti-mosquito insense to clear the tent when I didn't have the tent door shut enough. With the door open, they leave pretty quick, then i can seal it up fresh like it never happened.
Omg you guys have your own store now!!!! 🙌🏼 So neat! Btw we are like a clone of you guys cuz i literally have like allll the stuff you guys have recommended 😂
Yeah it’s pretty cool we’re excited! 😃 It’s nice to be able to show all the stuff we like and use because it’s impossible to mention it all in the videos. And awesome! 😃🤙🏽 Really hope the stuff we have recommended works as well for you as it has for us! 👊🏽😊
We go thru a last check down and put back what we dont need. And we always have stuff we domt need. Always. And since weve done this.....we are packing frugal naturally.
I have a tent with a small screened in porch (or vestibule of sorts) in front of the tent entrance/exit which is great for keeping bugs out when you have to go in/out. It can be annoying to deal with two zipper doors but it's easily worth it. When you've opened the tent door & while you're closing it back the porch screen remains closed keeping the bugs at bay. Nice video.
Depends on the environment you’re in I suppose huh… but definitely not with bears around. We’ve seen them rip cars apart to get at food that was left in them. We have a lot of bears in the areas we camp the most and they all come with bear boxes in each site to store your food in.
Hey 👋🏽😊 Depends on how cold out it is, what makes you personally feel the most comfortable, what type of camping you’re doing, and how often you plan on going! If you’re backpacking you’re going to need a much lighter sleeping system, if you’re car camping you can get away with bringing bulkier stuff from home. We’ve done regular pillows and blankets while car camping in the summer plenty of times! If you plan on going camping a lot though, having a good sleeping bag or two rated for specific temperature situations would be a good investment. 🤙🏽
Just adding to the previous. if camping in the summer take a sheet, that way you can stay cool when sleeping on top of your other gear & still keep bugs away.
the air mattress thing, don't just air it up for a couple hours, if you got room, air it up & put your weight worth of items across it at least overnight. Learned that lesson years ago...the hard way
When we use our Intex we blow it up when we first setup camp and then we might hit again right before bed to make sure it’s full. Doesn’t really lose too much air during the night, but we’ve had other ones in the past that were pretty bad with that. 😁
Roll/fold all the edges of that tarp under that tent. That way there is no chance of rain water to get on top of the tarp and get between that layer of protection.
Honestly if the fire bans get that bad we tend to not even bother going to that area because we love to have a real fire when we go! 🔥😎😂🤙🏽 Haha several times though we’ve had no choice without warning and would just cook using our little butane/propane backpacking stove and that’s it. One time we drove 5 hours to a place we had a reservation at and a fire was so close they had evacuated most of the area but they let us camp there anyway as long as we didn’t have a fire. Raining ash. Basically dark/orange outside from the smoke blocking the sun. Tougher to breathe. It was kind of ridiculous. We were like the only people there. That’s a cool idea with the diy ammo can. I’ve seen some propane fire pits I’d be curious to try out on like big multi day car camping trips, but they’re definitely bulky to travel with.
@@WhereWeWild A few companies make ammo can fire pits now, but going the DIY route saved me a good amount of cash 😁 and they are definitely a lot smaller than the standard "portable" fire pits. I have a short video of my fire pit on my YT if you're interested.
In Australia we need to avoid camping under large eucalyptus trees in spring summer. These trees can drop large branches without warning, and we are talking of 30 cm or 1 foot in diameter, widowmakers. These are the second most planted trees worldwide wide. We use a caravan annex mesh under the tent and put tarp on top. Bugs and snakes are a good reason to leave. Don’t feed the animals because, when regularly fed, they get angry when there is no food for them.
With all the camping videos out there, this video should not be trying to teach beginners about outdoor camping from indoors on a couch. These tips are all good, but if a beginner doesn't know to at least look at their tent and set it up before getting to a camp site, they surely wouldn't understand how to set up that tarp for a rainy situation just by hearing about it. Have videos for each of these examples with most of this audio accompanying the examples. Sorry for the critique, but I felt it needed to be said. Most of the comments I see are from non-beginner campers with additional great tips. If a beginner watched this video, they'd have a good list of tips, but they surely would have been looking for more videos to learn with visual examples.
People need to lose the mentality about feeding chipmunks. Yes they are cute BUT, they can fend for themselves. They become a real nuisance once you start to feed 'em.
My 1st camping trip I left the tent door open and we had thousands of daddy long legs in the tent. That was a new fear unlocked with spiders falling on you and crawling everywhere. I can promise you the tent door was shut after that.
Racoons scavaging sound like a criminal trying to break in. Whew. I think they get mad when there is nothing at our site that they can eat. We wash everything we used to cook and pack all up and put in vehicle. Trash is taken to dumpster. Sure wish all campers would do the same.
When I pack for camping, I bring one of everything. A bathing suit, a pair of shorts, a tank top, a T-shirt, a long sleeve shirt, a flannel shirt, sweatpants, blue jeans, and the appropriate amount of underwear and socks. A fleece jacket, a leather jacket, and a raincoat. Pair of sandals, a pair of runners, and a pair of rubber boots. A wool cap and gloves.
Haha I’ve heard people say that before! 😃 Some find the blue relaxing but I can totally see how that would make some minds feel that way for sure, especially in cold weather.
Pro tip for #1, eat first. Don't work out how your equipment works hangry. It will help you and your spouse avoid and argument. Oh, also not the day before you leave on your trip... Just saying.

Same in Colorado!
Use red light instead of white light when getting in/out of tent at night. Bugs aren't attracted to the red light.
Yeah the red light is nice for that doesn’t wake anyone up either. Good for eating too as far as the bugs haha 😁🤙🏽
Well...they are significantly less attracted to red light but not completely...due to a different wave length used apparently.

Placing a clothes line above your tent in case of any falling tree limbs.

@@KaiMirra Cool 😊🤙🏽
Gas One rocket stove is what I use. It's basically a cooktop that doubles as a fire pit.
the giant of British outdoors, Alfred Wainwright said, 'there is no such thing as bad weather only unsuitable clothing'
Haha I like that 😎🤙🏽
Camping with a dog gives so much security.
Appreciate your perspective! Most of our videos have the visual aids you are looking for. 🤙🏽
That’s no fun! Haha mosquitos and biting flies are even worse! 😂 Definitely always gotta shut that door. 🤙🏽
No fishing poles no camping
Aye 🎣😎🤙🏽
one time. my husband forgot the tent
Hahaha stuff happens 🤷🏻♂️😁 We forgot our pillows and blankets on one trip, just left them all ready to go in our living room. 🤦🏻♂️😂
Somehow it has gotten lost in the new world 🌍 the big one common sense lol🤔
Hahaha oh yeah… you can say that again. 🤦🏻♂️😂
Dont camp by a beach.....the waves will scare the crap out of you.
Hahaha yeah they can if you’re not used to them, just have to be mindful of how high the tide is going to come up.
?
We made all those mistakes 😂😂😂
Think everyone does 😁
Racoons scavaging sound like a criminal trying to break in. Whew. I think they get mad when there is nothing at our site that they can eat. We wash everything we used to cook and pack all up and put in vehicle. Trash is taken to dumpster. Sure wish all campers would do the same.
Yup! And bears are even worse! They will destroy your car if they smell something in it. 😳😬
Noticed your musical tattoos. Do you play ?
Haha yeah guitar mostly since I was a kid. Music has always been a very big part of my life. 🤘🏽😎😊🤙🏽
You car campers are funny and are like bear magnets if you want to see a bear just go to a campground
Haha just have to keep your site clean, no matter where you are 🤙🏽
When I pack for camping, I bring one of everything.
Hey better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it 🤷🏻♂️😁🤙🏽
Dont buy a blue tent. They are depressing to be in and feel cold.
Haha I’ve heard people say that before! 😃 Some find the blue relaxing but I can totally see how that would make some minds feel that way for sure, especially in cold weather.
I like the green ones
This should have been a 2 minute video.
Lol yeah good luck editing that 😂🤙🏽
I did not make it through this video, every few minutes it was taking me to an add. Ugh
Hahaha welcome to RUclips 🤷🏻♂️😂🤙🏽
This could have been 10 minutes shorter if you didn't babble
Stop your crying. 🙄
@@WhereWeWild lol still a good video... babbling and all
Let your Lady talk,
Thanks for the comment! We really appreciate the support 👊🏽😊
Pro tip for #1, eat first. Don't work out how your equipment works hangry. It will help you and your spouse avoid and argument.
Oh, also not the day before you leave on your trip... Just saying.
Hahaha nice 😁🤙🏽
Bring a pre-cooked meal for the first night, or a big snak.
