I can't believe it is more than 10 years later, but am just now getting into the game, and your videos have been such an important part of starting to learn the game, and to love it! Thanks so much Rodney!!
I'm so glad you're finding these helpful! One of my favorite games - have a great time adventuring!
Just wanted to add my thanks Rodney. I have Multiple Sclerosis and cognitive function is one of my major symptoms. This makes learning new things a bit of a challenge at times and has made learning new games a bit intimidating. Watching you play through this made me comfortable enough that I know I would enjoy (as well as understand) this game, so look forward to playing it when I am able to get it.
I have multiple sclerosis as well and I bought this game with the complete cycle of mirkwood plus expansions because I wanted to play something to take my mind off the disease. Still learning the game and it's great. Stay strong MS warrior because MS is not our identity.
Hello from 2019, trying to learn after picking up my first core set (2nd hand)
Welcome - enjoy your adventuring!
This game is awesome, I agree.
Same in 2021
Same in 2022
Thank you so much for this video series. Just recently picked this game and the manual was a bit confusing. Your videos helped me a lot.
Keep up the good work!
I have this too. Let's play sometime.
Glad to have helped Christian!
Excellent Mark Micallef . I just have the core set and first AP. After giving it a solo run last night - this game will surely be popular at home even though I got smashed hah
The missions get much harder after the first one. You should be able to beat e introductory mission even with a very basic deck. There are also more missions you can download. Which heroes did you play with?
Only played one game and it did take me a while as I was watching videos and reading the rule book as i went. I followed the manual. So I played with the Tactics deck with Legolas, Gimli, Thalin.
I was struggling to quest as my willpower was always lower than the current threat level. Plus a few times I had treachery cards that 'exhausted' my heroes until I pay two resource tokens from its own pool. So was on the backpedal the whole game.
Will try and play it again solo tonight see how I go and will look into these downloadable missions.
Do you own a lot of the AP/expansions?
just ordered this on amazon. arriving tommorrow. thanks to you, i will be able to enjoy it that much more. thanks man!
You're very welcome! Have a great time playing :)
2020 Says Hello. This helps me a lot, i just got my first core set and trying to play it. It feels so cool and oldschool already. Thx for video.
You're very welcome - have fun adventuring!
Hello from 2019 (almost over). I got my core set as it was first released and haven't played it in years, so I'm here to refresh my memory. Great video as usual Rodney. I wasn't aware of youtube tutorial videos 8 years ago, so I missed these.
Oh, and the end of this video is awesome XDDD
It's never to late to learn a new (or old!) game :)
Dove deep into the archives for this one. Another fantastic video, Rodney. Well done!
Never too late to enjoy a game :) Glad you enjoyed!
Just ordered the brand new revised set because your wonderful videos sold me.
Have a great time adventuring!
You made me buy it. I was addicted after my first game yesterday. I'm loving it - Thank you!
So glad you had fun with it!
I am so grateful these are still up. Thank you so much
You're very welcome - I'm glad you're enjoying!
Thank you Rodney, helped a lot, appreciate the time you take to do these.
So glad you're enjoying!
This game has completely captured me honestly and this was an ultra clear guide, I'm actually running a series of this at the minute but I think i'll send new people to this video if they are unclear on the rules.
So glad you're enjoying the game and found the videos helpful!
Stunning series, highly watchable. Love the detail of your reviews and your genuine enthusiasm. Count me as subscribed.
This was the video series that convinced me to invest in this game. Always enjoy your videos, very informative. Thanks so much!
You're very welcome, I'm glad the video was helpful!
I'm dyslexic, so trying to read the rules from FFG gives me a sore head. watching your series has opened this great game to me. im chuffed you have taken the time to make an easy to follow guide. thank you!
I'm really glad I was able to help!
Just wanted to let you know that this video is still being taken advantage of to learn this amazing game, even in 2020. Thank you!
So nice to hear - have a great time adventuring!
Watched the whole playlist yesterday night and played it today without any problems!
Great videos, thank you very much :)
So great to hear - I hope you have many fun adventures!
I would like to Thank you very much for doing this series as well. Thank you.
You're very welcome!
Your explaination is the best! Thank u! In my country - Poland - I couldnt find sucj an explanation, so very very thank u for it!
You’re very welcome! Glad you found it helpful. Greetings from Canada!
and by the way, I have had the game in my shelf for over a year, and thanks to your video I was brave enough to try to figure it out... Thanks!
You're very welcome Matt - very glad to have been able to assist!
Trying to figure out how to play this game. Bought it tonight, so relieved when I saw watch it played had a video! Haha
This is one of our earliest ones - so maybe not as polished, but hopefully helps!
10 years later still a banger , many thanks Rodney👍
Hey, thanks for the kind words Sean :)
I'd always wanted to get into this game and the Revised Core Set coming out a couple of weeks ago was a great opportunity to jump in. This whole series was the perfect thing to help me get going once I got the game home and set up. Now, If I could just figure out how to not lose Gloin in the first 3 rounds somehow...
THAT I can't help you with ;) Have fun playing!
Great tutorial! helped me a lot with my first adventure.
Very nice to know :) All the best in your future adventures!
Thank you for making these videos. Now that I understand the rules I'll be able to solo this game which was the reason I bought it in the first place. Great job!
Great video. Really helpfully explained. Thanks for taking the time to put this together
You're welcome, thanks for taking the time to leave such a nice comment :)
Thank you so much for this video. I bought the original core used and your video was vital in teaching me this wonderful game. However, my win rate using the leadership deck is absolutely terrible!
Solo decks can be quite a challenge!
I've played so many Fantasy Flight games, I've started saying "exhausting" instead of tapping when playing magic.
Those look like the best fitting card sleeves that I have seen. What brand are they?
These are Clear Dragonshield sleeves.
I think dragon shield makes the best @@WatchItPlayed
I like a thematic explanation for mechanisms (where possible) because it helps me remember. Thematically, how would you explain how 'committing to the quest' causes characters to become 'exhausted' and unable to fight or defend?
I would just think of them as being very dedicated to that specific task (while others were preparing to fight or defend themselves from attacks, these questing characters were packing their gear, gathering provisions, exploring, etc).
Just bought this in 2021... getting to grips with it!
Never too late to learn a great game - let's do this!
Really good tutorial.
Actually, really good tutorial CHANNEL.
Thanks so much Timo, that means a lot!
The end is great!
Glad you enjoyed :)
Thanks, your videos are extremely helpful. Your objectives are achieved, I think!
2021 and learning the game!! What a cliffhanger there!!!
Let's do this!
Ah Rodney, I wonder how much money you made me spend so far. You just have this way of explaining rules that makes it crystal clear. I only watched 3 vids and I'm already looking for the best price online for a set of Lotr LCG lol
I assembled one of my threat counters incorrectly too. Easily fixed; just slide a knife in between the base and number wheel then give it a slight twist.
Great job, man!
Very kind of you to say!
Keith Collins is a legend
Couldn't have said it better myself!
Hello from 2020 :-). Thank you 🙏 for this video! Very good, love it!
So glad you're enjoying it :)
I find it a bit funny that this has an executive producer. :) thanks for sharing, 10 years on.
You bet! And the Executive Producers were people who kindly donated to the show :)
Just played this for the first time today was fun but hard to start but got the hang of most of it pretty quickly but dont understand some parts yet though
Hopefully the video was helpful! If you have any questions, feel free to ask here!
I LOVE your humor! Oh, and the tutorials are pretty good, too ;-)
Glad you're enjoying the videos Tim - thanks!
I am a former 40k player > 25 pages of rules is a blessing.
Yep, it's all relative, isn't it? :)
hello from 2020. Love your play throughs. Your'e sense of humor is like mine; "silly" as my family tells me. One question: Shouldn't Thalin's ability of "dealing 1 damage to each enemy as it is revealed by the encounter deck" supposed to put a damage no not only the Dol Guldur Orcs, but also on the Forest Spider also? Or you didn't do it because the Forest Spider was already there at the tart of the game? (I guess that's two questions)
Hey Dale, it's been long enough since I shot this, that I'd need a time stamp to double check the section you are referring to. Thanks!
@@WatchItPlayed I'm sorry. It is 10:39
Dale Disabato Right, that Spider was already in play, so Thalin’s ability wouldn’t trigger on it.
@@WatchItPlayed Thank you for your quick response. I was hoping that wasn't the answer, but oh well!!! Again; enjoy your videos. I like watching your children grow up....
Definitely a hard game. I usually do this solo, with two decks, like a two player game. U usually need a high quest level but also a high combat power, which is hard to get with just three heroes of 1 deck.
It's simple, every time I want or I buy a game, I watch your videos as reference or for learn the rules even after read it, thats your goal I think :) Rodney Smith you're amazing and thanks you to do this for boardgame fans like me. PS: even if I'm a french canadian I understand EVERYTHING you say ! :) Best Regards.
And now he's on the back of the box of many board games! He's done an awesome job with this channel!
2 questions. Can one character defend multiple enemies at one time? And if one of your heroes dies do you keep that hero's current resources or do they get discarded
You can only defend against one enemy, unless it's card effect says otherwise. You lose that characters current resources if it dies.
Very helpful! Thank you :)
Glad you liked it!
Great video. Also--what kind of watch is that you're wearing?
+Cody Deitz Good question! I actually don’t remember anymore - and I lost the watch so I can’t check.
awesome
Rodney, I've noticed that you apparently used to have magic. What happened to it? Why can you no longer magically teleport cards with a snap of your finger?
I don't like to overuse my powers. These gifts are a responsibility :)
I only watched this for him to say card(s)
+LOL JJDEDERPYFLY Well, I'll bet I didn't let you down - I said cards a LOT in this video :)
+Watch It Played you sure did I enjoyed it 20× more every time u said cards!!
"Curd" :D I also like it.
Ah that moment when you get Lord of the Rings The Card Game Revised Set and pull up a video with Rodney 10 years younger.
Going WAAAAAAAAAY back. Have you played at all before? Hope you enjoy!
@@WatchItPlayed I vaguely recall playing the original once upon a time, but it's been awhile.
@@BoardGameCo Enjoy the revisit :)
Not sure if you will read this, I just realized how long ago you posted this. I just started playing the game.
After an enemy is "engaged" in combat and after my attack step, the enemy is damaged ( for example he has 3 damage tokens out of 9), does he return to the staging area? or does he remain engaged into the next round and should his threat level not be counted next round?
He remains engaged, so his threat level does not count!
Congratulations on this excellent guide! One thing not so clear to me. Hope you can help me! If I have say 4 progression tokens scored by having more willing power than threat power in the previous phase, once I start the travel phase, I have a location which point is 3. Can i use the 4 progression tokens I have already to complete the active location and discard that card? If so, what happens to the progression tokens? Do they all go back to the search deck or just 1 that has exceeded the 3 progression tokens needed to clear the active location? Thank you! Claudio
Any progress tokens you have "must" be put on the location you have traveled to. Any left overs can then be put on the scenario card. Whenever you travel, that locations must soak up all progress tokens first before you can put any on the scenario quest card. So in your example, you put 3 on the active location and discard it, then put the last one on the scenario quest card.
Hope that helps.
Ah great! Thank you so much for your reply!
Only one more thing if I can ask! What happens in case an enemy can't engage 'cause his score is lower than mine? Do I skip to the refresh page straight away or I can still attack enemies that haven't engaged me at first? Thank you very much!!!
fingolfin75 You can't fight enemies in the staging area, but the rules tell you that you may "choose" to force a single enemy to engage you each turn, even if it is above your threat level.
The travel phase is after the questing phase. If I understood Fingolfin75's example correctly, I thought all 4 progress tokens would go directly onto the quest. He then travelled to a new location. In the next questing phase, up to three progress tokens would be placed on that location (which is now 'active', having been moved from the staging area during the travel phase of the previous round) with any more than that again going directly onto the quest. Have I been playing this incorrectly?
I think part of the confusion here is just that it's hard to put into words exactly what we're trying to show each other, so something is probably getting lost in translation. In short, if you have a "location" card in play that you "traveled to", it becomes the active location and all quest tokens must be played to it until it is resolved, before you can add quest tokens to the main quest. If you have no "traveled to" location currently, than progress tokens go directly to the quest.
Can I ask what sleeves you are using please? Looking to sleeve my collection! Thanks!
Hey Benjamin, these were clear dragon sleeves.
just one question, when the Orcs were revealed you placed 2 damage points to Gimli but you didnt take into account his defence (which is 2). So the defence doesnt matter in that kind of scenario? Because if it does, than Gimli doesnt take any damage, the 2 damage points from the Orcs are ''blocked'' by his defence.?
Please provide a time stamp for the section you are referring to, and I'd be happy to try to help.
Defense only applies during an attack. In this case the orcs of Dul Gul Dur deal damage directly to a character committed to the quest and do not attack
@@WatchItPlayed 9:40-50 but it was answered by @Justin Lorence, so all is good, thanks.
Another question about Objective Cards in the Escape from Dol Guldur: while it is guarded it is considered as "Guarded" not "Unclaimed," right? If so, the Dungeon Jailor isn't able to send it to the encounter deck. If I defeat it's guard I am not forced to claim the card, right? So it remains in the Staging Area undefended until I claim it and this status is when the Objective is "Unclaimed" (and the Jailor can send it away). Am I right, or I'm missing something?
Hey Daniel - while I do try to answer all game rules related questions, I tend to avoid trying to cover card specific rules (as it would be too many for me to remember/cover as one person :) ). For that, you might want to check Board Game Geek or with the publisher directly. Sorry I could assist more personally in this case.
Good video, I tried to play along, but I don't think my game came with kerds???
This has been a common problem for our American viewers. Very concerning! ;)
You think that's a problem? I don't have any kerds OR reezorses!
What are the ways to get rid of locations other than making it the current location, because i have 3 locations in the staging area with a location that is already active
I ended up with 6 locations in the staging area and an active location. Ridiculous!🤯
Making them active is the way to do it. Sometimes you can get a lot of locations in the staging area :)
Lolll this time i was really getting in to it but suddenly a .......to be continued jump in to my face Ha hahahaha this one is really good :)
It's a shame that Chaz's music got copyright claimed. Deleting the intro instead of muting it pretty much destroyed the timing of the automatic closed captioning.
Yeah, it's unfortunate - especially when they claimant had no rights on the music. They are hard things to beat.
Looks like a fun game, but very complicated -- or seemingly so.
It's got quite a few moving parts, but you may find things start to click after a turn or two.
Hahah what an ending! So climactic... or should I say Cliffhangmatic? Or maybe Climacthangery? Errr.. regardless, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time :D
So glad you enjoyed the cliffhangmatic ending Ivan :)
"To be continued..." LOL!
Magic Trick at 1:41
Can anyone please tell me what are the games being played in the opening intro scene. Thanks!!
Mansions of Madness first edition, Wrath of Ashardalon, Small World, Space Hulk. You'll find videos for all these on the channel, including Mansions of Madness second edition.
Thank you for the info!! Much obliged friend!!
Where did you buy the sleeves? What size are them?
I bought them at a local shop - but you can get them in many places. These are the same size that would fit cards for Magic The Gathering.
Im confused, you're using uncommitted allies and heros during combat?
You've got it.
HAHAHA! Great ending!! 8o)
If one of your hero dies, the threat level remains the same or you extract the hero's threat from it?
You don't subtract what they initially added (whew!)
Thank you! I've just got the game today. It's awesome! I wish I'd found it sooner. And your tutorials are the best even after 6 years!
Thank you very much!
Do you have to flip one card per hero you send on the quest?
t1ravisb The encounter deck reveals one card per player.
Wow thanks for responding after all this time. Just started and me and a friend got rocked because we were adding encounter cards per HERO we sent on the quest
t1ravisb Very pleased I could help! I appreciate you watching - have a great time adventuring!
Man not even the Real Fellowship from the Books could beat that!
Why are your Threat counters bigger than the ones I received? Pls?
I’m not sure. Perhaps in later editions of the game they changed the counter sizes?
Mine are also smaller, and they don't have the slight cut outs on the edges either. Not sure why they got rid of that, seems easier to spin the wheel like that.
Could someone tell me the name of the first board game used in the intro, please!! :)
That was Mansions of Madness. You can find it in our playlists.
What's the name of the second board game used in this intro? Thanks
wehttamc Wrath of Ashardalon - there is a video series for that in our playlists.
"Re-Zource" lol
Accents, eh?
What game is that at 0:15?
Space Hulk 3rd Edition. You'll find videos for it here on the channel, if you're interested!
@@WatchItPlayed great thanks Rodney
That was just mean. (the continued) ;-)
What a life saver. There is way too much reading in the rule book.
Glad this was helpful Matthew :)

Never too late to learn a great game :)
id rather play a living card game than fry my eyes looking at a pc screen
14 orc lovers dislike the video lOl
I can't blame them!
