I haven't picked up the Starter decks, and I've been doing just fine so far. I found a great core-set-only deck on ringsdb called Back To Basics that almost feels overpowered. I'm even coasting through the Angmar Campaign so far with it.
Fantastic video. I picked up the revised core set and wanted to get the others but I was so confused on where to start. You did an incredible job breaking it all down clearly and now I filled out my wishlist on what to get next, starting with the starter decks! Thank you
This is exactly what I needed! I started collecting LOTR LCG this week and love it to death but had real fear about not being able to get those packs. This is handy! I'm keeping this as a guide :)
Yeah, I just picked up The Lord of the Rings The Card Game box (Gandalf cover) at a local thrift store and I'm completely lost. Guess it's time to break open the rule book! Then this video will probably make sense! ;)
Your experience hunting down packs just before the announcement of the repackage just gave me arkham mythos pack ptsd - I think Carcosa alone must have gouged me at least 5x msrp, and now here I am ready to do it again 😂
Hello from Korea. Huge Tolkien fan. Brilliant video. I will be buying this game. Great to learn about all the enthusiastic interest in this game. Cheers!
Great video, fella! Very condensed and informative! Sadly I used to have a master set of every single release, including the nightmares. Sold in many years ago and have regretted it ever since. Guess I'm starting over, and this was a great video for help doing that!
Awesome video! I bought the revised core set yesterday and this has been so helpful. I'm already tempted to get the Fellowship saga expansion and preorder the Two Towers one (despite not playing any core set game yet)
Thanks for the video nelson! Normally I'm here for the Champions content (love your podcast with Villaintheory), but I've been thinking about dipping my toes in this game to get something new. Well new for me at least! I love the LCG format and my friend has Arkham so this seems like the move. Thanks again
Nightmare packs make the quests very very thematic and have improved upon all the quests I have played so far. I got them *luckily* after an email went out where some former FFG employee had a warehouse for his games he was selling, and he had them all for sale at once. I think it was $600 total (I have a problem)
That is a good question! I think I kinda assumed they would not get printed since they jumped straight to the LOTR trilogy, that being said, I really hope they do get printed because they are a ton of fun!
They do, but not a ton! Like you get Gandalfs and such in the starter decks. The cards that are repeated are super useful and are needed to make the starter decks function as a standalone product!
I’ve been playing journey through middle earth and really like it. But this caught my eye. So I’m wanna start this now (year after you posted this 😂) there are more expansions available now right? Thanks for the vid. I’m a new watcher and subscriber!
You having such a good how to play video and buyer's guide should come with some kind of gateway drug warning as you've taken me from first play to a full GameNerdz basket in under a few hours 😂
In order to get a full playset of cards in the original packaging you would need 3 total core boxes. So the options would be to buy 2 additional core boxes (if you want multiple copies of all the cards) and then you could print the campaign cards out from the FFG website. Or you could buy the revised core! I think the first option would be the cheapest while the second is a bit easier!
My Lord of the Rings Core set ( which is the original version) came with Black Riders Expansion, so to play the fellowsphip of the rings saga I just need to get the The Road Darkens pack.
Thanks! I used to play this game way back. Did any rules change with the revised sets? Why were the sets revised to begin with? What about items to organize card storage, any recommendations on box inserts, etc?
Hey! Short answer - no rules changed. Longer answer - there were a few cards that got their traits updated and they added in a way to play campaign mode through the new released cycles, but functionally in game no rules were updated. They reprinted it to make it easier to get and more economically and ecologically friendly. It was getting very difficult to find different APs and this took everything and combined it into one box. Storage is an insane task lol I use a big white box (www.amazon.com/BCW-5000-Count-Monster-Storage-Strength/dp/B0857L4913/ref=dp_prsubs_3?pd_rd_i=B0857L4913&psc=1) with Tesseract dividers(www.tesseractgames.co.uk/lord-of-the-rings-the-card-game). This is a video on how I store Marvel Champions and it is a very similar system to what I do for LOTR if you are interested! ruclips.net/video/WG2T6DlyhGw/видео.html
@@NelsonAllOverCards thanks for the detailed reply. Do you have a Patreon? I’m a fan of your content, even though I’ve stopped playing Marvel TCG. The Star Wars video was great!
I bought a (legacy) core set years ago and really wanted to love it, but found the game quite tough. Hoping to get back into it now with help from the starter decks. Do you think I'll miss out on much by using the old core set? It seems like most of the cards haven't changed in the revised version?
I actually only have the old core as well. There were very very few changes (and I think all the changes may be on cards that are in the starter decks, but don’t quote me on that) and really the only difference is the number of each card. So the new core comes with at least 3 copies of each player card while the original set didn’t always do that!
My wife and I are trying to incorporate LOTR to our rotation of games I don’t think I’ll grab any that not been repackaged. Between Arkham horror and champions I already have a lot of content.
I found the files for PnP core set campaign cards provided by Fantasy Flight under player resources. Now what? How do I go about printing them out? Can I go to a local printing shop? How does this work?
Agmar really making it hard for me to like this game its such a brutal time in true solo that makes it not that fun at the moment for me 😂 I do hope we get more hero packs
@@andrewshaw3703 Before I answer a few questions! Which theme do you like more? Are you super interested in the deck building side of the game? LOTR is a lot harder and there is much more to learn about on the deckbuilding side of things. That being said, I think it is more satisfyingly than Marvel Champions if you put in the time to learn it! Champions is great, easy to pick up and play games, plus it is still getting new content! (There is a lot of LOTR content though so you wont run out any time soon lol)
Since the posting of this there have been a few products released, all of which I would recommend and I don’t think any of the suggestions here have changed yet!
They will work together! The original is a smaller box, the revised core set is what is pictured in the thumbnail of this video! The old one is more of a square shape!
Man I wish they repackage more stuff.
