I Bought A Geodesic Space Dome!

  • This fall I went up to Ontario, Canada, to pick up an 18ft diameter geodesic dome! This was at a former NATO satellite facility near the Diefenbunker, outside Ottawa. (The big white dome on top of the building is still in use, so we just got a smaller one :-)
We're planning to install this at Sandland for use as a radio observatory and general cool looking lawn ornament, probably in the upper field near the fast food playland that we picked up previously.
Huge thanks to Marcus Leech and the Canadian Center for Experimental Radio Astronomy (www.ccera.ca/) as well as CSS Building Inc (www.cssbuildin...) for hooking us up with this!
The CCERA is refurbishing the big satellite antenna at Carp into a radio telescope. I'll be doing a follow-up video with more info on the organization and their facility. They're all volunteers, and as with most science things, they can always use more funding! If you'd like to help CCERA with a donation, click here: gofund.me/29c8...
Parts of this video were filmed on location at the Diefenbunker: Canada's Cold War museum. I'll probably be doing another follow-up video on the bunker since it's so big and interesting! You can find more about it here: diefenbunker.ca/
Thanks also to ‪@SimpleElectronics‬ and Tim Skinner (timpossible.ph...) for helping out with this project!
Stay tuned for more videos about this project, coming soon!

Off topic, but I LOVE that drink! It's about the only fizzy juice drink left in the UK still full of "natural" sugar since the sugar tax was introduced here in about 2018. Not only does that mean it tastes better (to combat this "sugar tax", drink makers decided to reduce the regular sugars and then mix with roughly the same sorts of aspartame/Neutrasweet chemicals as in diet/no-sugar drinks. This means they don't taste as nice as they did pre-2018!), but it's also useful for diabetics when we need a REALLY sugary drink to brink us back from low blood sugars.

Very cool to see you were in the neighborhood! The escape room at the bunker actually goes on in areas that are actively used by the museum, just after hours (unless they changed it recently). I'd recommend people try it out as its quite a fun one. Having gone through the museum a couple of times, it really is one of a kind and worth sharing in a video. It's a pretty well kept secret in the national capital region! On certain days of the month, guys from the local ham radio club are there too.

Just remember to check to make sure you can still fit the dish parts inside BEFORE you finish putting the dome together! Would suck to have it all together and find out the pieces of the dish don't fit through the door!
A cool trick you should try once it's together is to lay down on the ground with your head exactly in the center of the dome and start playing low frequency tones like for meditation.

As i cruise into my 7th decade on this planet, I can state categorically that Canadian Tire used to be MUCH better, but that changed about 10 years ago when a controlling interest was sold to a U.S. investment firm. I've been involved in a number of "hardware heavy" hobbies over the years, and Canadian Tire used to be one of the "go to" places. Now? It's more of a last resort. Very sad.

(Dunno how they're structured now) Traditionally each Canadian Tire franchise was independently 'operated' but -forced- _expected_ to accept returns from any 'Canadian Tire' under pain of having their franchise revoked and the location reduced to rubble by the corporate overlord who retained ownership of the location.
It has caused years of ongoing problems for higher profile locations profits because less-accessible ones offload their defect/bad merchandise and refuse to take the returns. (edit:) CDN-Tire-Corp made it clear to the higher-profile locations that they'd be replaced if they didn't take the loss. There were grumblings about a class-action lawsuit in the news.
(And they did flatten the one nearest my house and left the lot vacant for years after a dispute over ownership continuity/'succession' - though that could also have been because they were reorganizing the territories.)
And yeah; I've bought a hilariously cheap toolset with a claw hammer from them "as-is" that had a warning label on the handle from the factory that very explicitly stated that it would break if I hit anything with it. When I tried to pry a nail with it, its handle splintered/peeled apart like opening a book. The laugh +100 pcs were worth the $7.50 .

I'm glad you got to at least experience the joys of Canadian Tire while you were here. You've pretty much summed up every Canadians experience within that 10-second clip.

I bought a nearly new, original iMac inflatable, that was made for a trade show. It was 10' tall inflated, but only survived for one summer. The packing crate was great.

There is a inflated geodesic dome station in southern Germany, the Raisting transmitter facility. The dome there has a 49m diameter. I should consider visiting it in the near future, since it is open to public by now.

The best move for those awful uhaul trucks is to bring some earplugs, then just crank the music way up so you can hear it through the earplugs. They don't distort the music too much but they do a great job of damping the road noise.

Being talked into taking an extra U-haul trailer from Canada to the US sounds like something that would happen to me.
