    For kids: get a stereomicroscope.
No sample preparation and it's easier to figure out what the sample image mean.
With compound microscope, the image (if you get any decent quality) is still abstract for most kids. Maybe when they get older and after viewing a lot of microscopy on YT for sample preparation.

I would love to know if there is one you would recommend for kids, I was about to buy this one but now not sure what a better alternative would be? Thanks

My Mom bought a Discovery Channel or National Geographic branded microscope from either a toy store or gift shop or some trappy place for my kids years ago and the expectation of disappointment was the only part of the experience that didn't disappoint. It had plastic lenses, terrible plastic construction. The box was pretty though, and it's my guess that the box is really designed to sucker people into buying it who have no business picking a microscope.
I'm actually curious what an expected price point would be for something that is good. The primary issue being that "good" is subjective and I'm more or less asking if $1,000 is too little to spend on a microscope? If so, what are the price points between good and great? $10,000? $15,000?

This is a whole discussion for a longer video, but the short answer is that there are some great brands out there (AmScope, Swift, Zeiss, and OMAX). These are the head honchos that have been around for a while. A compound microscope with two eyepieces will generally range from $100-$400. Then there are add-ons which make them more pricey, like an additional mount for a camera, or some special filters. I think mine was about $370 in total, including a dark field filter. Its served me pretty well, even though I’ve trashed it a bit on my adventures outdoors.
After the $100-$400 range scopes, the next levels are called DIC microscopes and Phase Contrast microscopes, which both provide unique experiences. Phase contrast is $800-$2000+ and DIC microscopes are well into the thousands as well. Of course, there are other professional microscopes that cost tens of thousands, like fluorescence microscopes and electron microscopes.

For more detail on those other microscopes, I suggest looking up the channel Microbehunter. He’s done some excellent videos comparing and contrasting phase contrast microscopes with compound microscopes.

@@fantasticmicrobes Nice man, thanks for all of the good information. 👍
Sidenote: I really think that your channel would blow up if you did make a video about how sperm react to spermicide. The viral potential ought to be pretty valuable.

I totally agree. I have a few more videos in the queue, but I bet I’ll get to that one in a couple weeks. I think experiments in general would do well.

Hi! Ha got one, but I could not see nothing. Does this microscope has a trick to focus the cells? If you know it, let me know please.

@@ibzanmoran6106No, it doesn’t. I asked my mom to get this one a few days ago and I was really excited. And well I thought it was alright. Until I saw this video, it’s really hard to focus and it’s kinda irritating.

Yeah, that’s what I like about this one. Especially the fact that you get so many extra tools and stuff with this kit. The viewing quality is always a gamble though with these cheaper ones, which is the main reason I gave it a low rating.
