    I ran that same machine at a place called the Ghost River diversion project. The dragline was walked in up ancient river bed in the late 40's by my Dad and Uncle. It stayed there and performed work for (at that time) Calgary Power Ltd. until the mid 70's. Thank you for posting this, brings back some very fond memories for me.

    Great restoration and it was an honor to see the original owner operate it.

    My dad and my brothers ran a model 25 for years and then a model 6. They were whizzes with those things and I can't believe how straight they dug ditches. Dump line might be a little long on this one.

      It will probably get a different boom. This one isn't too great.

    is it a murphy engine

    • @SteamCrane
      @SteamCrane  8 лет назад +6

      This machine predates the use of Murphys. The engine is a big 4 cylinderTwin City gasser. The engine was never replaced, because it turns "backwards", ie you crank it CCW, not CW. Thus a normal replacement would run the draw works backward. There is a known example where the engine was replaced with a normal one, with an added countershaft to reverse rotation.
      The owner of the operation has a Northwest dragline with a Murphy. It always starts, even in the coldest part of winter. Many Murphys were taken to work on the Alaska Pipeline for this reason.

      Some of these had Buda engines. We went through a couple of international engines and wound up with 371 and 471 gmc engines on the model 25 s.

    What was the double cab for?

    • @Foxyjosh
      @Foxyjosh 6 лет назад +5

      The left side of the cab contained the tagline apparatus which consisted of a massive chuck of cast iron with a pulley confined in a steel cage to keep it from swinging like a pendulum.. When the cab was modernized, that stuff was wire tied inside. When we rebuilt the cab, we were able to reinstall the original equipment. This side also holds the acetylene tank that powers the gas lights.
