SEAL Team 6 Commanding Officer on UDT/SEAL History | The DEVGRU Files - Episode 2

  • This is a rare opportunity to hear the history of the UDT/SEAL teams from a living legend like Dick Marcinko, the founder of SEAL Team 6 and author of Rogue Warrior. Brandon Webb sat down with Dick Marcinko for an exclusive interview prior to the book club event earlier this month. During this portion of his interview, Dick Marcinko discusses how the Navy first developed the Navy SEALs and the types of missions they were involved in. The SEALs were largely created in response to President Kennedy’s request to have unconventional warfare capabilities in every service in the military. He describes the SEALs as being a new toy for the Navy to play with and their roles were not clearly defined as they are today.

RIP Richard Marcinko. Your words gave me the motivation to step up and carry out what I needed to do for my family, through some pretty intense pressure, physical, and emotional challenges. I paid the price...but my family's future was secure. I accomplished a lot by being mission oriented, and cutting through the bs much like you did.
And lastly, you are right. I didn't have to like what I had to do for my family--I just had to do it.

At the end of the video he says "we just carried whatever we needed which was much different than what somebody back in the States said we needed." I thought that was spot-on. Looking at the crazy amount of kit the modern American soldier carries, with almost a meter of equipment stacking past his shoulders, it's no wonder that the Afghans called our guys "mules". So many guys are coming back from just four years of service with their joints completely shot for life; cartilage worn down to nothing. But when I mention this to authority types, usually the ones who spent the least amount of time humping around a small household on their backs, they say something insipid like "everything in that pack has a purpose." Meanwhile the guerillas say "what use is all of this if you can't move and you get killed, mule?"; I agree, and add "I can order you to pack 400 lbs of equipment and everything in that pack will have a purpose also." The question is, "does this 400 lbs pack of purposes aid me or hinder me from maneuvering on the enemy to kill him?" Nobody in charge seems to be answering that question, or even interested in asking it. Well hell, if we have guys having to call for Artillery, Air Support, and Medevac every time they make contact, because they're stuck, whether they are actually cut off or not, can't they just carry minimal supplies save for ammo, and a little extra food & water, then get supply dropped extra kit if they really need it? I don't know, just an idea, but it seems a better solution than increasing the likelihood of dying outright or ending a service career due to medical after only 4 years? I think the issue is definitely worth addressing.
And here's a thought worth considering: If you bring up the fact that a bunch of Illiterate guerillas who really do fornicate with goats are referring to our guys as "mules", you'll get all manner of bluster from their commanding officers. And if you really want to upset them, tell them the mules may actually be smarter. Now you'll have to wait 15 minutes, but when he is done yelling and screaming, inform him that it's either that, or the Army treats it's mules better than its soldiers. When queried as to what the f*ck you are talking about, show him the standards for pack animals at that time. Mules are expected to carry up to 1/3 of overall body weight. That's the limit before you begin ruining the animal's health and he refuses to move even though the weight is now distributed across four legs. No amount of verbal and physical motivation will get him to cooperate. He has no sense of future consequences. (Now having pushed your luck enough DO NOT bring up the fact that these "illiterate goat fornicating guerillas" held the battlefield and 85 Billion worth of US toys, while we left in total disarray, leaving people behind, losing soldiers and Marines senselessly in suicide bombings, when we could have held Baghram and left during Ramadan, all because the Pentagon chose to back a drooling pants sh*tter.
Now the soldier's (alleged, if he's a Marine) greater intellect becomes a drawback, as threats of future consequences weigh heavily on his mind and motivate him to hump the pack around that may easily exceed his entire body weight. That's insane. So this is where we should probably ask science to step in, analyze human biomechanics and performance, and go with their recommendations, since they are absolutely correct. So what is the answer?
According to research conducted by Marine Corps Capt. Courtney Thompson at the Naval Postgraduate School, the most a Marine should be stuck carrying into the fight is a comparatively measly 58 pounds. Let's see that's about 1/3 of 174 lbs, right around the average weight of an infantryman... So it would appear that the issue of the judgement of a pack animal being superior to that of a Soldier or Marine, when it comes to toting weight at least, is an officer in charge of setting weight standards issue, not an enlisted serviceman issue, who just has to obey orders and still suffer the consequences either way. So now they have done the science, let's hope for our children's sake that they actually "follow the science" and that "following the science" isn't just something they do when it comes to barely tested disease prevention concoctions.
