I've been a horror junkie since I was a little girl and The Conjuring terrified me more than almost any other film I've ever seen. The fact that no person dies, (RIP Sadie the dog). just adds to how fantastic this story is... The real life story is less theatrical, but still really interesting.
I highly recommend checking out Conjuring 2. It's also a wild ride
I grew up a Horror buff myself.
As far as American Horror, I felt that way about this and The Ring until I saw Hereditary.
I thought the real Warrens said The conjuring was tame compared to what actually happened.
I agree this is my #1 of all the modern horror the last 20 years, the pacing is perfect, never a slow moment always good when rewatching
The real dog wasn't named Sadie. One of the daughters did an interview after the movie released, and said she didn't even know how the Warren's knew about the dog dieing. They apparently got the dog a month before they moved in and can you guess what they named it, Bashiba.
Right at 20:00 I simply burst into laughter. That was priceless. I love hearing you then say "Shut up, leave me alone, shut up!"

Listen... if a house seemed haunted I'd leave, but if a demon kills my dog, I'm coming for war and I'm not stopping until one of us is dead. I'd get some holy water, get a machete from Home Depot, pour the holy water all over the machete, and go back and see just how unkillable demons really are.

Regarding the smell. Some people have witnessed the smell of rotten meat and/or sulfur when demons are present. That's what the kids thought were farts.

Indeed... "Based on," in the loosest sense of the concept. Considering that the Warrens exaggerated their anecdotes, and Hollywood amped it all up...

I watched that same documentary and turns out almost everything we see in the film never happened. The only thing that really happened is they moved into the house. And that's it.
The conjuring movies are based on real events. The oldest daughter of the family that lived in that house, Andrea Perron, said that the movie was about 5% true. She has written a series of books on what actually happened in the house, it's called "House of darkness House of light." And supposedly, it's so disturbing that they couldn't put most of it in the movie. Yes, the real story is more scary than the movie, according to Andrea Perron.
The second movie is based on the Enfield haunting that happened in England, and the third movie is about a man who was possessed by a demon and murdered someone. All of the movies are based on Ed and Lorraine Warren's case files. Lorraine waren was a clairvoyant/psychic/medium, and Ed warrion was a demonologist. They were married and went around trying to help people with hauntings for many, many years.
As for your question about why the demon stinks. Demons give off the smell of rotten flesh because everything in hell is rotten. So they smell like a rotten corpse. It's just one sign of demonic infestation.
I was curious if you read the books that Andrea wrote and if anything strange happened. My daughter got them on her Kindle for me. She never had any issues with it, ever. As I was reading, the pages would turn back. I thought I was doing something wrong. It didn't happen with any other books we have read on that device.
The actor who plays Lorraine went through some messed up things when filming this film and after it! I remember watching her in a interview talking about what happened to her and I can’t mind if it was andrea or a member of her family but when in the real house and around other places the actor who played Lorraine would always have holy water because she was told to by the family that went through this. She said she instantly believed them and never doubted any of there story when she met them and when first starting to film the movie due to what she felt around her at that time. She felt haunted like things would happen to her it’s so messed up 😅
I thought The Thing reaction was great. This reaction, WOW!!! JL's reactions were more than I expected. I knew he would be jumpy but my expectations were exceeded. JLoween came early this year. I would love to see JL react to Mama. I feel that would be another great reaction.

I don't ordinarily watch these kinds of movies....but before this one came out, I saw some RUclips interviews with the actual family. One story came out that I remember distinctly. After they moved out, the new owners hired a handiman to go in & stay there about a week....fixing pipes & making repairs to the place. He lasted about a night. He was so spooked, that he fled the next morning. He even abandoned his tools & his truck......never returning for any of that stuff.
So you’ll hate this, but the “haunted stuff room” in their house is a real museum.

Almost had me coughing up my dinner, but I won't judge, The Conjuring is the one movie that had me really freaked out the first time I watched it
My granny's house had a cellar. This was in the 80s in Los Angeles. It was creepy.
Whats crazy about this movie is, after it came out one of the daughters that lived in the house did an interview. In the movie at the beginning the dog dies and in the interview she said, she doesn't know how the Warren's knew about that. They got the dog a month before they moved into the house, and guess what they named it, Bashiba. She said her mom was the one who found the house too and was immediately drawn to it. Her mom was also the one tortured by the demons the most. Also before they moved in the previous owner, an old man, said to the Father "For the sake of your family leave the lights on at night". The neighbors also confirmed the lights were always on at night when he lived there.

I think the reason that they mentioned Annabelle was because the Annabelle case took place in 1968 and then there next case wity the Perron family case took place in 1971. I think mentioning the Annabelle case was a good way to introduce the Warren's so when they take the Perron case later, we know they are the OG's
That room that Ed and his wife have was or is a museum where you can see the items. Supposedly a dude went to the doll and made fun of it . Later on they said he wrecked his motorcycle and died

The REAL Annabelle doll....was a Raggedy Ann, but Lorraine didn't want one on the set, and felt it would be inviting some sort of trouble on the production. You can see the actual thing in it's case in their little museum.

I love The Conjuring series. Part 2 is far creepier than 1 I thought. Also, will need to try The Annabelle series as well as that is all a part of The Conjuring series.

In real life they had to live in that house for another ten years. The Warren's couldn't help them and they had put their life savings into the farm house so the literally stuck there . House of darkness house of light is the true story by Andrea Peron and it's truely amazing they altered a lot of stuff for the movie. They believe it was Mrs. Arnold and Bathsheba going after their mother. The family was Catholic and their local perish told them to stop coming to church and wouldn't help them. The Warren's approached Carolyn to investigate. The basement wasn't closed off they believed the hearth( fireplace) is what unleashed everything when Carolyn opened it up . They also visited the farm house multiple times before purchase and knew the owner briefly. All the man said was leave the lights on and the man was known in town to never ever have his lights out every light was on in the house always. No toy music box the Warren's believed all the research Carolyn did was cursed object so they took her book without her permission. Carolyn wasn't possessed but she did get chucked across the room the father punched Ed Warren and threw them out the Warren's never returned. That's just some of the changes the real story is even more horrifying
