I have the first version of this laptop. Upgraded the ssd to 512gb. I do wish this second version had 16gb of RAM and a backlit keyboard. Another good thing about these surface devices is how easy it is to reinstall windows. Since it comes from Microsoft, no need to hunt for the right drivers.
Watching on my Surface Go 3 tablet! My 1st Go device and 2nd Surface tablet. I like the combination of well made and small. There are advantages to having a small device that still a full PC. Nice to see MS continue with a small clamshell laptop.
Tried one and really like it. One minor thing, no micro sd for local back--up. Feels quality yet is not heavy. Great for performance (i5 8Gb) and portability (12" 1.1kg).
I have the SL Go 2020, and to be honest i regretted buying it back then, but i changed my mind this year. I got it because it looked and felt good, love the premium compact feel and keyboard, and i got a great deal on the 8gb one. When i got it last year the fans would be on all the time, even to watch RUclips or browsing the internet it was annoying, even when closing down the laptop to put away you could hear the fans still on for a few minutes, so i would not use daily. Updating to windows 11 did no fix anything, however this year 2022 there was an update and after that it seems like the fan and heat problem i was having was fixed, its quiet now. I dont game on this, is strictly for office/web browsing/video watching, and it does great.I mostly use in close clam with a screen and works fine with $20 type c hub. I only use type c to charge, have never used the actual charger which sucks so bad, the magnets and stuff make it annoying to use and connect without looking at it. I would recommend to buy the 2020 model, i seen the 8gb 120gb like new used for $250-$300, great deal for this type of computer. The backlight keyboard is the only heart and knee breaker of this laptop, the only thing from making this the perfect on the go budget friendly high quality laptop. If you have the budget go for a MacBook Air.
Thanks for the video. I was holding out for the new model hoping it would have a backlit keyboard and better display. With the previous model being $150 off at Best Buy, may as well just grab that one. There are better laptops out there for the same price MS is asking for this new model. MS still trying to sell a 4GB model for $600 is insane.
Returned my surface laptop go because the fan sounded like a jet engine. The battery life was not good, slow charging speed. Built quality was excellent tho.
Hey Lon (big fan from Belgium here) If I interpret the video correctly I see that everything in ubuntu works out of the box. Did you manage to test if the webcam worked too ? That used to be a problem when I was running Linux on an 1st gen Surface Go (the tablet version). Aside from that Linux ran fine on those baby's.
Instead of touchscreen, Microsoft should’ve put a higher resolution screen or backlit keyboard. Don’t need to put touchscreen on every device with a surface branding.
Very useful review with all round focus on different usage patterns … most of these other so called reviews are entirely obsessed with gaming, Adobe Photoshop use and video editing, which is absolutely not what these types of devices are targeted for, as you so aptly called, these devices would be extremely handy for execs, business folks on the move, and even software architects who need to do a lot of short PoC / prototypes, presentations and meetings all day long, besides of course the student community.
My younger brother has it and my god does it look good. It has 8gb ram and 128gb storage i5 and was only £629 which is a steal coming from Microsoft lol
Hi, Lone. I would like to connect Surface laptop go 2 to hdmi monitor. Are you able to suggest the device. I am looking for the budget connector from usb c to hdmi. Your suggestion is appreciated. Thx u
I usually have mine on clamshell connected to a 27in, and it works fine but can’t go higher than 1920x1080, to me is ideal but wished maybe be able to be more but it works for me.
@@JamesSmith-sw3nk I mean yeah, but even ~$200 budget and midrange phones for the past several years have included 1080p screens, as one example, the 2-year-old Motorola Moto G Power has a 1080 x 2300 resolution and costs under $200, while this thing is $600 and couldn't spare an extra maybe $5 or $10 for a nicer display? Cheaping out is fine when we're talking under $300, but after about $500 I don't think that's very acceptable.
I had two of the original Surface Laptop Go, and both had video problems in which it crashed and showed garbage pixels, regardless of what applications I used. I ended up getting an M1 MacBook Air, which is still going strong. Take this with a grain of salt, as they may have fixed this problem in the second generation of the product, but I figured that I should share this.
Agree, i lived through that, the first model really sucked when it came out and for like a whole year and half. It wasnt until this year after a regular update that my computer started working like i hoped when i got it last year. I really like it now. But yes if you have the budget go for MacBook Air, it beats any PC under $1800 on everything (except gaming).
Pro tip. Nintendo Switch AC adapter works well with these, the 45 W it supplies is enough to charge full speed
Only tech reviewer I trust just picked it up for the upcoming fall term

Hunting for drivers hasn't been a problem since Windows 10, upgraded my whole desktop twice with the same SSD and it just worked.

9:20 The first generation of the Laptop Go had Wi-Fi 6, just the the Go 2.
Best Buy was offering the midrange model for $100 off, so needless to say, I got it, and love it. what I need it to do.
Returned my surface laptop go because the fan sounded like a jet engine. The battery life was not good, slow charging speed. Built quality was excellent tho.
This is a perfect choice for writers who live in Word.
Aaah you tried Ubuntu on it :) Thank you so much. I'm getting this one as my primary linux machine to mess around on.

Seems like a solid second laptop to me. I wonder how well it handles Linux.
Great review - I use mine Surface laptop Go 2 for development and work great.

The price is hard to swallow imo
Buy it used like new, they usually half price.
Hi Lon ✌️
You're the best at reviewing tech 👍

Very thorough review.
Any idea what this will output at when connected to an external monitor ?

Nah, too many cut backs. Backlit keyboard comes even on budget laptops. Should be on this one, dissapointed
Not enough RAM.
🧢
Keep up the great work
Hows the speaker performance lon?
Great review
Still waiting on 5700u acer aspire 5 review. Please review that laptop
Tell them to lend me one. They rarely get back to me these days
What about video conferencing like Zoom?
No Mans Sky sold it for me. Ordered.
"Feet never go back on the same way".... or they could not be bastards and not put rubber glued on feet over the screw holes...
Silicone adhesive from hardware stores works, it's the same stuff
Size and weight is good but the screen is not worth it. I had original one and returned it couldn’t handle such a crummy display
Not even full HD at that price point is a killer. The yoga 6 seems much better for the money.
*It's only a 12" screen.
@@JamesSmith-sw3nk still should at least be full HD for the price

Great!
why every tv channel host like to scream happily in their review?

Lol, that's not normal and besides this is completely different model 😂

Can RAM be upgraded?
No, it's baked on the motherboard.
