    Love how Calibre allows you to put any ebook from any vendor onto a Kindle without paying Amazon a dime, and let's you put any owned (licensed) Amazon epub on any other e-reader. Completely defeats the purpose of them being d*cks about it.

    For about a year now Amazon had stopped accepting MOBI (their format) and required EPUB instead for book submissions (with a few exceptions) to Kindle Direct Publishing (their bookstore). So this is not really a surprise. Also I could see no difference in the final book when I submitted in MOBI or EPUB format. As far as I know both formats are actually HTML format with wrappers so it should always be easy (but for any DRM) to convert from one to another.

    The first reason I never even considered buying a Kindle is their boycott of ePub.
    The second reason is Amazon's attempt to lock you into their ecosystem, and all the bs that comes with that.
    The freedom Kobo gives me is of immense value. It can read anything I sideload, and Kobo never attempted to delete books on my e-reader for example.

      Yeah, I'm looking at getting a Kindle 3rd Gen (Keyboard) for all the old and fun features, I just wish there was a way to prevent Amazon from reaching their God-hands down from the clouds and disabling my device, however unlikely that might be.
      Other than the Big Brother-ness, the 3G is cool, and everything seems fine for usb transfer. The removal of Mobi support for send to kindle sucks, as does the lack of native epub or html support - my envisioned use case is traveling somewhere without useable internet access for the kindle, downloading files directly onto my phone and transferring to the kindle via USB. Presumably, I could use my phone as a hotspot, but what if there is limited data, or access is only brief, and it's a mess anyway. Importantly, I do not have nearly the same access to conversion software like calibre on my phone so I'm stuck with using txt files or something which is unfortunate.
      Edit: Perhaps more likely, I'd like to be able to download Epub's or other files to the kindle directly through 3G or wifi, and that's just not an option

In fact, I would have gotten one of those if there were any available second hand near me, but there weren't, so I went looking and I found out about the kindle keyboard and the cool custom firmwares and things people have made for it and I like the idea of having 3G access everywhere.
      The removal of the kindle store doesn't matter much to me at all, I never really intended to buy stuff from there, and if I wanted some of the free books I could just do it from another device.
      The biggest bummer is probably the native formats, or lack thereof
      Edit: and the fact that Amazon is able to just wipe your device is pretty scary, but worst case, I just keep wireless off.

    This is the next step Amazon is taking to close the siege with sideloaded books, insinuating customers to buy books only through Amazon Store. This update sounded good, but, in fact, that's just the opposite. MOBI books, when sent via e-mail, appear with cover, but now, when sending an epub file, there's no cover at all. And guess what?! Amazon will stop the MOBI support via e-mail service. This is just ridiculous.

    Maybe I'm just used to do "unorthodox" things, but to me it's really not a big deal the only MOBI files on the kindle.
    1. The conversation from EPUB to MOBI is immediate and you can do it directly online. Yes, it is an additional step though.
    2. I stubbled across the Thumbnails prooblem too, but I managed to solve it. If you plug your kindle on your pc, look for a path called "/system" (you have to type it manually). Among the rest, in this path you find a directory "thumbnail" with all the Thumbnails of your books. Whenever you load an EPUB usually it's image is set as the "No Image Found" default one, which is actually a thumbnail that you can FIND in "/system/thumbnail" path. You simply paste in that folder the image you want with the name pf the "No Image Found" thumbnail, and you have the image.😉

      @joabjohn9787 Год назад +1

      When I go to do your second method, I don't know what to name my file. The name of book appears on my paperwhite as shows in 4:36. When I go to system/thumbnails, there are a lot of pics of my previous books with random file names (eg "thumbnail_82347436669984392"). I don't know how the system decides the file name of a certain book cover. Even if I put a book cover in this folder, what should I name the file?

    • @stefanobianchi8736
      @stefanobianchi8736 Год назад

      @@joabjohn9787 The thumbnail names are given directly by the kindle save system, you DON'T want to rename them.
      Kindle links the thumbnail image with the file name that you see (all those random numbers). What you want to do is FIND the thumbnail name associated with the specific book and OVERWRITE the "No Image" default picture with the one you like (downloading on the internet).
      I'll list you the steps in a real example:
      1. Get the book from wherever and PUT IT on your kindle.
      2. Open your newly inserted book. After a while you should see its book cover as "No Image Found".
      3. Once you see that book cover, go into system/thumbnail and LOOK for the NEWER "No Image Found" image in that path: that should correspond to the BOOK COVER of the new book.
      4. Finally, simply download the image that you want from internet, RENAME the image with the SAME NAME of the "No Image Found" thumbnail in system/thumbnail and just REPLACE IT.
      At the end, you should have the wanted image inside system/thumbnail with the initial strange name.
      If you go now to the book lists you should see the new book cover!

    (1:16) Yep! I prefer PDFs because I read a lot of comics and other illustrated stuff and want my e-books to look as close as possible to the print editions. However, EPUB and other reflowable text formats work better for stuff that's entirely, almost entirely, or mostly plain text, like prose novels and lightly formatted illustrated novels. Reflowable text formats also work for smaller screen sizes, depending on the print size of the book.
    (4:09) Yep! Alongside my Calibre library, I keep a folder full of original files, since Calibre can modify file metadata for some formats.

      Thanks! 😊
      The main reason that I prefer print-replica (or 'fixed layout') e-books is that I have little to no space in the flat (apartment) I live in where I can shelf print books, and I prioritise reading illustrated stuff, so I'd rather have them look as close to the possible to the print editions (and I read on large tablets and monitors).
      As my reading interests are very different from those of others, I like watching videos of other people's e-readers to see what kinds of books they read.

    Does the email conversion from ePub to azw3 only work when there’s no DRM in the book?
    Also, would a converted ePub library book stay on the Kindle even after the original ePub version expired when the due date was passed? Essentially you’d have a permanent copy of the library book. I can’t see Amazon doing that as it would undermine their bookstore. Why pay for a book when you can get a permanent library book? But I don’t know. I know at least one DRM removal program also makes a non-expiring copy of a library book so maybe they missed that effect????

    The problem with epub it that when you send mobi files to Amazon account you can send so called "old" mobi file format and these books have covers. But epub are converted to the "new" mobi file format (azw3) and that's why there are no covers (Amazon blocks intentionally book covers for books that are not from their bookstore). Doing a jailbreak can fix that issue but unfortunately not everyone wants to do things like that.

    • @Maneetpaul
      @Maneetpaul  2 года назад +1

      Ah, thanks for explaining this! It’s weird how the old format supports covers but the new one doesn’t! Feels backwards to me.

    • @sylwuskak7065
      @sylwuskak7065 2 года назад +3

      @@Maneetpaul Oh no, the new format supports covers as well (remember that all of the books in the Amazon store, or at least most of them are in the new format). But when you send a book to the Amazon Cloud their servers add PDOC tag to a book (Personal Document) and when Kindle “sees” that this is not a book but a personal document it blocks the cover. So it’s intentional behavior by Amazon not to show these covers.
      Because we can do nothing about adding this tag to a book (it’s happening on Amazon servers), the only possible thing to do is do a jailbreak (hack the Kindle) and change this behavior. But to be honest I haven’t done this. Despite being a developer I’m pretty scared that I could break my Kindle.

    • @Maneetpaul
      @Maneetpaul  2 года назад

      @@sylwuskak7065 That's very interesting, thank you for clarifying. So basically, Amazon is intentionally trying to prevent people from having third party books loaded onto their Kindle. That's very frustrating! The solution to this would be to use an app like Calibre to convert EPUBs to the older MOBI format, which would still show the cover on the Kindle?

    • @sylwuskak7065
      @sylwuskak7065 2 года назад +2

      @@Maneetpaul Well... I know. And don't like it either. Especially because I'm from Poland and there is no Polish ebooks in Amazon so most of my ebooks are not from Amazon. That's the main reason why Polish people checked what to do to have covers on Kindle.
      Yes, now you can convert books to old mobi format and send them to Kindle and the covers will be there. But because Amazon said that we won't be able to send mobi files in the future so then the only solution will be to transfer books in old mobi format via USB.

    A few points:
    1) Great beard, man!
    2) support of EPUB format or lack of it was never what kept Amazon customers (or those of other "ecosystems") in their respective "walled gardens". DRM systems were. Transforming eBooks from one format to another is almost trivial, as long as they are not DRM-encumbered (and you are not willing to undertake a technically simple, but in most jurisdictions illegal step of stripping DRM "protection"). That said, more and more publisher explicitly request that Amazon does not apply DRM on their titles, so that they could easily be utilized on devices other than Kindle. (After all, Amazon's source of profits is content, not hardware, so why would they care?)
    3) PDF is not an eBook format, it is a page description format. A very different beast.
    4) Mobi, azw and later Amazon formats are custom variations of EPUB (some features added, some not implemented, but differences are not dramatic, making conversion relatively easy.)
    5) KDP supported uploading EPUBs for ages. Amazon's own KindleGen, KindleCreate and KindlePreview all suport EPUB. The only change is in SendToKindle (app and e-mail feature.)
    6) Given how many EPUBs are malformed or lack features like a good TOC, I prefer to massage EPUB first in sigil or calibre before sending it to my Amazon cloud lib
    That said, I am probably an atypical user, being both a book (and web clipping) hoarder and a computer geek (and professional).
