    From Wikipedia:
    Huntington is a city in Cabell and Wayne counties[5] in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It is the county seat of Cabell County, and the largest city in the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area, sometimes referred to as the Tri-State Area. A historic and bustling city of commerce and heavy industry, Huntington has benefited from its location on the Ohio River at the mouth of the Guyandotte River. It is home to the Port of Huntington Tri-State, the second-busiest inland port in the United States.
    Surrounded by extensive natural resources, the industrial sector is based in coal, oil, chemicals and steel, all of which support Huntington's diversified economy. The city is a vital rail-to-river transfer point for the marine transportation industry. Also, it is considered a scenic locale in the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. This location was selected by Collis Potter Huntington as ideal for the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, the predecessor of what would become CSX Transportation which still operates CSX Transportation-Huntington Division in the city to date.
    The railroad founded Huntington as one of the nation's first planned communities to facilitate the railroad and other transportation-related industries at the railway's western terminus. The site, previously a collection of agricultural homesteads, developed fast after the railroad's completion in 1871 and is eponymously named for the railroad company's founder Collis Potter Huntington. The first identifiable permanent settlement, Holderby's Landing, was founded in 1775 in the Colony of Virginia. With the exception of the neighborhoods of Westmoreland and Spring Valley, most of the city is in Cabell County.
    As of the 2010 census, the metropolitan area is the largest in West Virginia. It spans seven counties across three states, with a population of 365,419.[9] Huntington is the second-largest city in West Virginia, with a population of 49,138 at the 2010 census. However, with the 2019 United States Census Estimate, the city's population has declined to 45,110 and the population of the metropolitan statistical area declined to 349,485. This declining population trend has been ongoing for six decades as Huntington has lost over 40,000 residents in that time frame.
    The city is the home of Marshall University as well as the Huntington Museum of Art; the Mountain Health Arena; the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Huntington District); the Collis P. Huntington Historical Society and Railroad Museum; Camden Park, one of the world's oldest amusement parks; the headquarters of the CSX Transportation-Huntington Division, the largest division in the CSX network; the Special Metals Plant; and the Port of Huntington Tri-State, the largest river port in the United States.
    The largest employers are Marshall University, Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary's Medical Center, CSX Transportation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Amazon, DirecTV, and the City of Huntington.

    I miss living in huntington. my dad grew up there, and when we'd drive around there, he would always tell all of his stories about what it was like in the 60's and 70's. He's got a story for almost every street lol

    It doesn't look like it changed as much as people have told me. They say it got really bad since I left in 1984, when I was 30. But, it still looks pretty much the same as I remember.

      I moved away in 1980. I've been back a couple times to visit old friends. It's built up a lot around Marshall University but pretty much the same as when i grew up in the 60s there. I did have a lot of fun there all through the 70s though.

      It's bad, but none of the areas in this video are that bad. Fairfield, Guyandotte, parts of Highlawn and parts of the west end have declined considerably with large numbers of homeless, prostitutes and drug dealers roaming around.

      @@mikeblankenship7930 I remember someone with the last name Blakenship, but I can't think of the first name right now. It's one of those deals, where if you said the first name, it would come back to me instantly. But, I'm pretty sure that the person graduated with me from HHS, class of 73. It could actually be you that I am remembering...but I'm not 100% sure.

      @@thegraphicw Guyandotte has always had a bad reputation. I was never in Highlawn very much. My father had a friend who lived in that area. I spent part of my childhood on 24th Street West and Washington...until we moved to 12th Avenue, between fifth and sixth Street, the summer before third grade. That was 1963. So, I never spent that much time in the areas you mentioned. I was in my mid to late 20s, before I ever went to Guyandotte at all.

    If I am not mistaken the Keith Albee Theater is on fourth avenue. When I was at Marshall in the 1970s one of the bars I frequented was the University Lounge on fourth avenue. There was a small motel beside it that had a swimming pool.

    I've lived here pretty much my whole life, and I still do. It's got its problems, but for the most part, we're really not that bad. We're cheap, our nature is beautiful, our crime rates are low (as far as I know) and we've got some tourist attractions to save our decimated economy.

    • @hondansxr1454
      @hondansxr1454 2 года назад +2

      @@frankhall7005 What you can expect? Generally we don't have a good economy, but if you're able to find a source of income there's really not much to worry about, since we're one of the cheapest states in the country. Our property/violent crime rates are low as far as I know, but I can't confirm what you say about the opioid problem since I haven't heard anything myself. But even if we do have a depressed economy, we are improving rapidly, and Huntington has a nice downtown and park. There's some good stuff to do here, but don't expect many large mansions and limousines.

Do you remember a guy named David Holley, who went by the nickname Herb? He was a couple of years older than us. I met him a few years after high school. When I met him, his parents lived over on Collis Ave. I don't know how long they had lived there. I didn't know too many other people who went to East. But, my parents were good friends of Kathleen and Leigh Kautz. You may have known them...possibly. They had an older sister named Lucianne too. If I remember her name correctly.
