Justin….fantastic video. I completed my graduate school degree at Marshall in the 1973. I am from the Philadelphia area, and at that time thought Huntington was, well, almost heaven. Been back once, and want to visit again. I had heard the city had fallen on very hard times, which frankly, kept me from doing the trip. This video has rekindled my desire to experience the town. Need to eat at Jim’s 😁.
Thanks for the comment. We'd be glad to have you back for a visit! From my understanding, many parts of the country are experiencing some hard times. I have no problems with Huntington. If I did, I would just leave. :) There are some cool things being developed here such as a new trail system for hiking/biking, a MU baseball stadium, cyber security headquarters in the works, and even more downtown revitalization... I'm excited!
Add to the list the emerging, revitalizing West Huntington Central City and Ritter Park. Born in Huntington, now living in cosmopolitan cities within Ohio, and now headed back to historic Huntington.
I have been thinking of moving my family to West Virginia. What is the job situation for people in the warehouse/forklift industry maybe even assembly line positions? Does West Virginia have programs to help people make the move, especially those who don't have the financial means to make that move but need to get out of the state they currently reside in. I live in New York State and the taxes, poor governmental policies that gives the criminals all the rights to do as they please have ruined this state. My family and I no longer feel safe living here. I myself am looking for a slower pace of life as I'm in my 50's and just looking for peace and quiet and the chance to walk the streets or in a park without running the risk of being shot or robbed.
Hi Hugh, sorry about your situation in NY. Near us in Huntington, the first types of job/industries that come to mind are a Pepsi bottling and distributing center in Ona, a Steel Supply company in Huntington, and a Toyota manufacturing plant in Buffalo. As far as programs to help people move to the state, what I can think of is AscendWV. They pay out $12,000 over the first 2 years for you to move to a rural area and bring your own remote work job. That doesn't really seem to be what you are looking for from what I gather. Sorry I don't know of another; hopefully someone else can chime in. Cheers!
Huntington does have its perks, but also for people who are thinking about moving here, there are things that you should be aware of, especially if you have a family or children. The only grocery stores here are Kroger and Aldi outside of the one Walmart that’s on Route 60. There are no health conscious food stores in a 50 mile radius. There is The Wild Ramp in Central City, and they sell fresh farm produce and meats. The Aldi is actually in Barboursville as the one in West Huntington is moving to South Point Ohio. Also the closer you live to Marshall or Ritter Park, the safer it is. There’s a big litter problem. There’s also some type of fast food restaurant almost on every corner, there’s very small room for eating healthy unless you are cooking all of your meals. There is a lot of drug activity in a lot of different areas but less near the college. Also most real estate near the college caters to the students. If you need it, the public bus system is somewhat reliable as most buses run every hour except the Milton bus line, but no buses run on Sundays. Within the city, there are a lot of abandoned buildings and houses, and a lot of them have been destroyed or damaged due to fires, specifically from something drug related. Homelessness is very predominant the closer you get around the state house, and I would advise to be careful if you have to walk around at night for any reason. Drugs are also very predominant, I have seen people walking and acting like legitimate zombies regularly. I have lived here for almost 2 years, and will tell you the towns bread and butter is Marshall, and anything Marshall related. My family is moving in a week, because we believe that Huntington is not an ideal place to raise a biracial girl, due to things we’ve seen and witnessed. And with that being my personal opinion, everything else I’ve stated are absolute facts.
What an in depth comment, and I appreciate you sharing your experiences! I’d definitely like to see an extra grocery store option; something like a Whole Foods. The only thing surprising in your comment is the big litter problem; I’m not familiar with this. What are the main areas you are seeing the litter? And I can’t blame you for wanting the best for your family… where did you end up choosing to move to?
been thinking about it. houses are insanely cheap compared to FL but hard to know what area is good. Found some for 30k that looks nice so price makes me think its not a good area.
I bet the houses are more affordable here compared to FL! Feel free to email me or give me a call if you need help finding the right area for you. We can go over your priorities and narrow down options.
I currently live in Charles Town, WV. I’m looking to relocate somewhere else in WV not to sure on where yet. Hopefully somewhere where there are plenty of people in my age group (I’m 27)! Just a lot of old heads where I live not to many youthful people. More or less looking for the younger crowd!
The internet is telling me that the median age here is 36 while it is 40 in Charles Town. Not much younger, but a little bit. We at least have a relatively vibrant "bar/nightlife" scene with the university in town (if that interests you). I am also willing to bet there is a group of people in Huntington that is into street bikes; that may be a community you'd like to meet and hang out with. If you like to get your adrenaline through mountain biking, there are several groups building a maintaining trails in the area. Thanks for watching my video and the comment!
Im looking forward to shopping for a investment rental property. Im getting pre-qualified today. The 25% is steep so ill be looking for affordable. Great videos.
Hi there. Yes and no. I have seen flooding occur in areas, but it hasn't affected my life... Check out the video on my channel called "Does it Flood in Huntington, WV?"
Hi there. Thanks for the comment/question. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any nearby, at least to my knowledge. If there was, I know an individual that would already be there... Maybe you could start one! :D
Ive been looking to relocate to that area from Orlando,FL. Im a single father with 3 young daughters, want a slower pace and more time to spend with them before they're grown. Thanks for the video.
@_dickey I've looked into a few different areas, huntington, Wheeling and beckley. My fathers side of the family is from Lewisburg and white Sulphur Springs. Everything I research, though, brings me back into Huntington. You would probably be the best to ask, though. Where would you recommend me look for the best mix of school district and affordability?
@@horriblehappenings1529 I can only speak from experience: I went through elementary, middle, highschool, and Marshall University here in Huntington. I had a great time, never felt unsafe, and there is always opportunity to excel. That can be through sports, AP classes, or other extracurricular clubs/groups. If grades are kept up during high school, you can actually obtain the Promise Scholarship and get a 4 year degree for essentially FREE at Marshall. (at least when I went to school. I'd look further into this for certainty) And in terms of affordability, the state of WV is great for this. Here in Huntington, the median home value can be about $150,000. (depends on how and where the data is gathered.) Cheers!
@_dickey back with another question. Do you handle any property management in the huntignton area or have any recommendations? I have been looking at some rentals in that area and then read reviews of some of the rental companies and they terrify me haha.
@@horriblehappenings1529 I don't handle rental property nor do I really have any recommendations. I do have two leads if you want to give them a shout, but I don't know much about them to be honest: Pancake Realty & Meeks Rentals.
This would be a town for us. We dont even have a bus system. I like a small town not tons of ppl all that traffic. Houses 600.000 no thank you. Looks nice to walk your dog . Little stores. I like not tons of resturant i cook . So if we go out once every 2 months great. Temp perferct. Peaceful no cars flying and squealing down the street yup this is it
Hi @Imnotyourdoormat It definitely sounds like you're frustrated with the situation. It can feel overwhelming when things seem to be falling apart. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Hi @henchmen999 That’s a pretty blunt take on it! Marshall definitely draws people in, but I can see how it might feel like a last resort for some. Thanks for sharing your perspective!
Don't forget about hunting and fishing. The Ohio River has some massive catfish!
Ahh! Good point!
Justin you are awesome. Thank you can never express my gratitude for all your knowledge and help coming home to this place I've never been before.

I’m glad Huntington is a place you could call home. 🏡
I would move to West Virginia if they would get rid of the State Income Tax now living in Florida.
Ah yes. I see how it could be difficult to leave the sunshine state where there isn’t personal income taxes. 😎

Is there a VA Clinic or hospital there?
Hey there! Yes there is; the VA hospital is on the west side of Huntington. About 20 minutes from the city center.
Very didactic. Well done

1. They're going to Marshall.
