  • Howard whistles provides multiple heads for their whistles. Howard may be the only manufacturer who does this. Providing multiple heads for their whistles means you and I can have one whistle body and multiple heads resulting in a variety of tone qualities without purchasing multiple whistles.

Waiting for my Howard to arrive. Ordered balanced head as I am a beginner. Excited every time hubby goes to mailbox- anticipation- that is unless the customs people detain it until I bail it out. Hoping it sneaks past them.

Hope it arrives soon. The balanced head is a good choice. I love mine

I’m surprised by how much I like the Chiff head. I haven’t been in love with the breathy/airy/raspy quality of more “traditional” sounding whistles-but the way you presented the Chiff head doesn’t just sound raspy. It sounds, as you say, complex and interesting. Very different from the Reed head-they almost come across as two entirely different instruments.
I started with the Reed head, because I love that pure, clear tone. But it IS loud (and I live in an apartment ;) and the octave jumps are kinda touchy-it’s relatively easy to overblow, at least for me at this stage of my whistle journey. So I recently invested in the Balanced head-and it will play more quietly, with a bit less touchiness between the octaves. So it’s been easier to practice with, and feel like I’m making progress.
I was sure I wasn’t interested in the Chiff head. But now I’m not so sure 😂
Thanks for a great demonstration. I’m a serious Howard fan too. (Maybe we should start a club! Transatlantic Friends of Howard!)

I love the idea of the Howard fan club. I think the balanced is a perfect decision, but I am also surprised how much I like the chiff head. I expected it to be too breathy or too raspy like some. But it is just a great tone.

Thanks for this video and reviewing all three Howard heads! I wasn't sure my ear would be sensitive enough to note the differences, especially not hearing them in-person, but I could easily hear differences between all three. And, particularly with the reed head. Thank you too for mentioning the resin coating. Did any of the heads you played have the coating? I've read about it on Howard's website and have been curious about its impact on the sound. Curious too if it is worth the extra $25 cost for the resin heads. I liked the sound of all three heads, but really liked the sound of the reed head and agree it would be interesting to compare its sound with a resin coated Reed head.

I spoke with the folks at Howard about the resin coating. They said that while it does dampen the sound, it also adds some complexity to it (whatever that ends up meaning). They are good folks. The Chiff head had the resin in it. That was all they had available when I purchased the extra heads. I would love to play the Reed head with the resin to see how the tone quality changed. I would really need to have the same head with the resin and without it to determine if the sound was improved enough to warrant the $25. They are great about email conversations. Tell them we've been chatting. They might have a sound bite to demonstrate the difference. I have all three heads, but I would love all three with and all three without the resin. My budget won't permit me. Ha, ha

@@LowDWhistle , forgot to say last night, interesting that the Chiff head has the resin in it. Going to listen to your video again this morning to see if my first impressions of the tone(s) are the same.

@@LowDWhistle , thanks too for passing on that you found the Howard folks friendly! I did find a sound bite for the reed head with and without resin available on the Howard website but couldn't hear much difference between the two heads. I'm going to listen again this morning with headphones to see if that makes a difference.
I hear you too with the budget!! We need a whistle lending library!! Or a meet up where everyone brings their whistles (and disinfectants) so we could test drive different makes/models. Some sort of precautions to not spread germs would be useful, but people sell/buy used instruments and I've read on Chiff & Fipple about instrument tours, so it should be doable. Chiff & Fipple sounded like each person agreed to follow a routine disinfecting regime before mailing the whistle to the next participant

I definitely think the folks at Howard could do a better job of posting videos on their site. Or they could build out their RUclips channel more. I love the idea of a whistle lending library. If everybody was trustworthy, we could even mail them back-and-forth but I’m not sure that would work. It would be fun to know where everyone in our group is, but I do know we have folks scattered across the globe

@@LowDWhistle , The sound clips I found aren’t in a video but are purely audio. They are on Howard’s low D whistle page under their written description of all three heads. I added a link to the page last night in another comment, but RUclips must have deleted it overnight so will leave it out this time.
I didn’t see sound clips for the other heads, only the Reed and Reed/Resin. Silvia Mári Frost is the artist, and the tune is Ar Eirinn Ni Neossfainn Ce Hi. Listening again this morning, I think I can hear more breathiness in the Reed/Resin combo.
I also read on their page “The Howard Classic Whistle” they are “also working on a hard resin insert”. As you say, it will be interesting to keep following them to see what they come up with next!
