@@thomasw1865 Hey Thomas I just filled out the survey again, see what happens this time. Still free, the survey was a lot less questions this time. Wish me luck :)
The good thing about Kenny's tutorials is that apart from the actual tutorials of Reaper DAW he could really provide a completely new and intelligent view on various things that are not Reaper's native. Just like now, after this video I went back to composing with LABS after few years it's been on my computer! 😄 Thank you for your videos!
Great video Kenny! Spitfire Audio creates amazing sound libraries and their free Labs libraries are incredible. I constantly use their sounds in the music I compose.
I am COMPLETELTY new to this as I have just downloaded reaper and spitfire, and I don't even have a synth keyboard. This is BY FAR the best tutorial I have found. It is the most actionable and made it the easiest to walk me through composing something.
I have not used Labs in a while but you helped me rediscover them.Loved the info on setting up the tracks with shortcuts. What a time saver. You got my attention.I`m checking out my Labs library again.Great job.
I swear Reaper just keeps getting better.... just imagine what it'll be like 5 or even 10 years from now. I think gonna start making beats in this thing now lol
At 2:32, I don't know that it's really accurate to say that slider affects "velocity sensitivity" -- I can see why you might think that, but for the most part, it adjusts volume by adjusting timbre. It's mapped to the mod wheel. So, for example, if you are sustaining a pad or string sound, you can use that to swell or decrease the sound by crossfading into samples that were recorded being played louder. For a lot of instruments, this creates a change in timbre (think brass, as a good example). So, the two faders (the first is mapped to Expression, by default) both give a sense of adjusting the volume, but in different ways, and they work well together to make sustained sounds more realistic and "human" sounding.
I have been working with Reaper for a little while. This channel has helped enormously and I think this is the day where I can finally feel like I know a little bit what to do. Thanks
Absolutely great job showing us how to quickly use and add tracks and layers. After binging quite a few of your vids, this one finally secured the sub. Keep it up!
God, of course! I've been wasting time, manually setting the input to MIDI (what a hassle) ... thank you for reminding me of the possibility to insert a virtual instrument: the input already set to MIDI is a huge time saver !!!
Another outstanding tutorial. I think Spitfire Labs is terrific. One way I use it is to have an instance of Labs is in my project templates for auditioning sounds. Using Labs I can audition a piano, strings, pads, etc. without changing my routing to different tracks or plugins. As always, thanks for the tutorial.
Been using Reaper for about ten years now, and love it, and love your channel Kenny, but I guess I'm in the very small minority to say I just don't like any of the Spitfire Labs instruments. I can't ever seem to get inspired by any of the sounds. However, I do recommend Decent Sampler and Pianobook - would you give those a try and post a video?
I have to agree with Harvey Rothman - our stuff is off line behind one ways transfers. A while back on a different system, I used another plugin like this that required a phone home cookie jar license thing and a few years later went to get it for a remix. Wasn't there. So basically I had MIDI data I had to use with another plug in that didn't quite sound the same. Really sucked when I had to tell the client, "Sorry can't change the performance without changing the sound"
More time-saving tips! I've been using Anvil as a midi editor to manually enter drum beats. The loop feature with quantization of a plug-in like Spitfire will save hours of time when I have to come up with custom beats. Thanks again Kenny!
Another solid video, Kenny. I was curious if you had any clever ideas on how to split out the drums to separate tracks? I love Spitfire, but have always wanted to output the drums to their own tracks.
My music computer is offline so my guess is that I won't be able to use this. Why does free software require an account and extra application to "phone home"? I'm sick of this. Lovely sounds though.
I've been holding off on this one for so long. Don't know why really. Maybe the interface. Anyway, I have it now. That mandolin will do until I can afford a real one. Thanks Kenny.
They keep putting out more sounds too.. LABS is amazing, I wanna tell you a cool free thing now cuz you help us so much.. Valhalla Supermassive... preset Echoes - synth - Cirrusmajorsynths... it is this insane amount of echo.. it is really cool retro synthwave vibes.
Hello there! thanx a lot for your awesome video explaining every single step! It is really helpful ... I do have some questions by the way, but I guess it is because, I am really just beginning this reaper thing, and... Anyway, If I don't have a midi-usb-piano connected to the PC I can't compose, I mean, I can't choose the pitch, etc.. it is right?... I need to but one, right?... Or there's another way to do it without a piano usb? And, I don't have the IN FX click to quantize either. It is any other part where can I find it?
At 9:42 you duplicated the track with the 2 instances of the instrument, but I don't see where you removed the low synth pad from the next track. Can't help wondering if it's there on all those subsequent tracks but just buried in the mix. Or am I missing something? Great video Kenny!
No. I fixed it in the edit. I initially showed how I removed the other one but it really seemed like a waste of time so I removed that part. This video was 25 minutes before I edited it down. Didn't think it was worth it.
All due respect to Kenny and his vast knowledge of Reaper and media production, but because of his very unusual way of speaking, I usually have to turn off the sound and follow along with just the video. Where I live we once had a newsreader who also couldn't get voice inflection right. And the harder he tried to be expressive the worse it was. Many statements sounded like questions and he would often emphasise the incorrect word in a sentence resulting in an entirely different meaning. In the end they took him off and he went onto a fine career in another field.
Great tutorial. liked the chord gun tutorial as well. Kenny I want to be able to trigger deferent parts of a midi song by hitting different pads on my edrum kit. So I can repeat the intro or extend the verse or repeat the chorus, I need the looped parts to switch seamlessly. I really liked that little demo song you made for this Demo, maybe you could flesh it out to a full five part song with each part being triggerable by hitting certain midi notes that I could assign to my edrum pads? Just a thought, I am looking for a Musician that could do this and I would buy the tracks and they could be different genres. Any thoughts?
My spitfire plugin has a lot of delay for some reason. Weather I press a key on my midi keyboard, or click the digital keys, it has about a .5-1 second delay.
Do you use the pads on your k-board to record the drum part? (I have 100+ millisecond input latency and feel like that might be a little too much when trying to record drums?)
Question: when i view my virtual keyboard on the screen and use my Midi keyboard to trigger the VSTs on an armed track I dont see the Virtual Keyboard show the Keys that i am pressing on my Midi Keyboard. I want to know which octave am I playing in as my midi keyboard doesnt cover the entire range and I use the octave up and down button to figure out where I am on the key board. Is there a setting somewhere that I can turn on?
this dope but question...i have the plugin activated but how do i Record it ? i added the channel as new instrument and i hit record , i can play the notes but it's not recording. any help ??? thanks
Hi im trying to learn reaper and I've just started using it with spitfire, but when I load it I dont get any sound coming out of the virtual keyboard. Any ideas of why this is?
I spent about a week trying to get this to work. At the end of every attempt was Error #3, which leads you to their website diagnostics procedure, which returns to Error #3, something went wrong, which leads you to opening a trouble ticket, which leads to Error #3 Something went wrong. I'm sure there's a way of getting it to work but I never found it.
Can anyone help with the following Reaper/Spitfire Audio problem. My Casio 61-key keyboard will not octave shift to reach the instrument's highest/lowest notes. The BBCSO Discover octave slider only moves the display and not the actual key I press. So my lowest keyboard note (C) always only plays in the middle of the Bass instrument's range. My keyboard's "transpose" setting only works when local/speakers is ON...obviously not relevant when working in Reaper. I posted this on the SA Community site but one suggested it was a Reaper issue, not BBCSO. Any ideas?? Thanks.
Can you help? No sound comes out with the midi keyboard you're pressing, just silence while the sound bar raises as if there's sound. I've watched many videos, nothing helps
So after I double click the VST like at 2:00 nothing opens up. It just creates the new track titled "LABS." I can kind of use it but it defaults to drums and no menu pops up to give me the option to change the preset like yours does. So as of rn it's only useful as a drum track lmao, someone pls help!!
Did you download the Soft Piano or other instruments that you wanted? You should be able to click the FX button and it will show the downloaded and available instruments.
Amazing sounds with these Spitfire vsts, however Ive had kinds of error 4 messages and download issues. Some work some others not so much. Id be just happy with the choir library, it boggles the mind how well it works in Reaper. I am sharing my network, which seems to be part of the issue I need to get rid of my tenant/roommate for an hour or so to figure it out. Kenny is brilliant as usual, love the short cut. I am still new to using such VSTs I have umpteen patches on my workstation but not as rich as these large samples. Its a mixed bad of advice reading about folks like myself running into issues with Spitfires download app. Never an issue with Reapers swf extension tool Any ideas?
