If you need more than just few simple chords, it is probably more convenient to use "Chords, Scales & Arpeggios actions and menu set" by Aeolian1. You must be in MIDI editor; however, you can insert even arpeggio for complex chord in less than one second.
Always glad to see more videos that not only provide useful resources, but also lead people away from the companies that are trying to prey on naive new songwriters, composers and producers with talk about "pro level chords" and all that nonsense.
i think it's easier to make any chord you could possibly want if you know a bit of music theory. it's faster, too. basically all you need to know is triads and intervals. 1) major triad = root+major 3rd + minor 3rd 2) minor triad= root+minor 3rd+major 3rd 3) intervals (like 2nds, 6ths, etc.) add flavor. learn how to build them (for example, minor sixth is 8 semitones), and learn their flavor. it's very handy.
That's easy to say from our perspective. We already know it and probably learnt it all quite a while ago. There are people who find music theory, even fundamental stuff like this, very difficult to grasp. I don't think these MIDI packs are a good replacement for music theory knowledge, but they'd be great teaching tools. If you use this chord pack enough you'll start to understand how chords work.
This is choosing to be a narrow minded person. What is easy for you could not be easy for others. Do we need to graduated in human being science to be able to understand this? I think we should learn to see others different from us and accept them as they are. Kenny thinks about all the week the strong the worst even... And I really appreciate it...
@@mielushe2lheureux939 you don't seem to find that i'm not gatekeeping, but, instead, advising young musicians learning a bit of theory to become better. what i said above is easy stuff kids learn in one day and you're already whining. go make some music, don't upset me. it's easy to just equalize everyone so you don't have to criticize yourself, be better than that. we as musicians should push ourselves to make better music.
Great Kenny. In the old days I used to write chords on bits of paper and pull them out of a bag and play them in whatever order they came out to see if it inspired anything. This is a more sophisticated modern version of the same thing... You can do the same thing with band names song or album titles. Just read a random line out of a page on a book and see what turns up.. Did a covers album with my daughter once... Used a medical dictionary and came up with the album title Fractured In Any Case... We thought it sounded pretty cool... 🤣😅😉
bring back the pod keennyyyy, the bashing unison deserves can only be given on the water cooler discussion place :D appreciate pointing people towards the free midi chord pack
You're just the right guy for me, just love that kind of music, even I mix some other material than this genre. I already learned a lot on the captain plugins, and this is just a great extra addition. Thank you so much Kenny. Time is my only enemy at this point.
Yes! I can really use this. I have always been skeptical about those ads for chord packs. This just seems like a very sensible solution for me, since I mainly record acoustic guitars and vocal and then add some bass and percussion, if needed. So this really seems like all I would need if I wanted to add some strings or piano. Thank you!
Yeah, definitely don't pay for a midi chord pack. That garbage you see advertised is more or less a scam. This is what a midi chord pack should cost. Free.
Another awesomely wonderful tutorial. This seems to have more flexibility and ease of workflow than Chord Gun (which is awesome anyway). And, I am ALWAYS amazed at how versatile and customizable REAPER is! But it takes a genius like you to explain it! Thank you Kenny, I'd be so lost without your videos!
Hi Kenny. Question: could you maybe do a video tutorial for Reapack? Apologies if you already have, but I can't find one. Many thanks for all your great work.
There is a saying that if you allow a greedy guy sit down, he would ask to lie down. Now I see that I can add any chord just by dragging and dropping. I wish they were all Visually available within from the DAW. Not from a file dialog where I search them through folders and files. But this would be more than sufficient for what I needed. Thank you again for this bombastic tutorial.
Hey! You can dock the medi explorer on the side of Reaper and do just what you're talking about, kinda like the way Ableton Live's file browser works. Just right click on the folder with all the chords in it and add a shortcut to always have it available to drag and drop chords.
I do remember that there is the ChordGun plugin in Reaper. What for should we need chord packs, having the ChordGun? Progressions may be useful though (but not for me, for instance, because for me the point of writing songs is in creating custom chord progressions that fit your melodies)
I like to use Chord Gun too. Kenny brought up the subject of midi packs as there are.so many to pay for now and to show they can be got for.free. They can also help with writers block, or if you are stuck in a rut with your writing.
Amazing resource, thanks for sharing. I've been looking for a good way to thicken some of my chord sauces and this really helped! I've been devouring your videos the past month and a half, so grateful for all you do.
I love this but I'm learning theory so I can't use it arghhhhhhhh! Hard typing it in helps me learn. But I've saved this ready for when it's all in my head. Fantastic tutorial.
Dear Kenny. I just want to thank you from all of my heart for your videos. Because of you I started to follow my passion in music creation. I am still making a baby steps and still have so much to learn. After your lessons I manage to create my first song from simple chord progressions and published it on my channel. Of course it's basic and some may find it cheasy, but it's a beginning of a journey.
Another useful vid.. Thanks Kenny! Searching your videos, but that's quite a few. Do you have any videos specifically for pulling in drum samples from ik multimedia Neil Peart or Hugh Paddington drum sets? I know that's pretty specific thanks as always Kenny appreciate you
Near as I can tell, the contents of the progressions file is all contained in the chords file, just organized differently. So you only have to download the free-midi-chords-20211125 file to get all the progressions too. The difference being in "chords", the progressions are in sub-folders by key, whereas with "progressions" all keys are in the same folder. Arguably the key-sorted folders is easier to work with, so I don't see a need to download the progressions file at all.
Very cool process, Kenny! Is there a way to apply a midi chord to something like the Spitfire BBC Discovery VST? (Unless I’m missing a setting) Each instrument is on a separate track. But if I wanted to create a string quartet or something that has a different instrument play a note in a chord, is there a way to send a note to a track? I guess that would probably just get really messy fairly quickly. Maybe you know a trick or a VST that helps with that. Thanks for the walkthrough!
Technically speaking, there are more advanced voicing for chords. I've never looked at these midi packs because I expected them to be the basic voicings of a beginner piano student. Also, depending on your needs and instrumentation being used, it will matter where these notes fall in the range of the instrument. That is, if you give crap. I'm just saying.
Agree, the only thing that might be more "pro level" is having a different choice of voicings. But it is easy to drag a given note up or down an octave to make any voicing you want. No need for understanding of complex music theory necessary to experiment with voicing like this.
Reminds me of the annoying commercials on u2oob for example the red head white guy music producer talking wigger style " chord packs? Nah I don't use chord packs "
Thanks for the video, as well as for your other great videos. But I have a question: why is there no orderly REAPER TRACK CHORD like in CUBASE? Thank you
From a guy who was knocking Plugin Boutique's Scaler2 a couple months ago, this seems pretty hypocritical. What happened to the "If these are the important tools for making music, you're not creating music. You're assembling it" mentality?
I had to watch through the Unison chord pack ad before coming here. A big scam, and you show how it can be done for free. I also like to use Scaler, a VST plugin, to help me find nice sounding chord progressions.
I downloaded the chord pack and mine are spaced out. Like there is a beat or two in between each chord. It doesn't play continuously like this video. I didn't do anything different from the video on downloading, is it just updated that way?
Yikes! We're going to put the Unison midi chord pack out of business!
Let's hope so! 😁
That Chord pack shouldn't even be a product

I also wanted to say no "Cheat Codes" either.
