Joel doesn't deserve a hero's death, because no one in the Last of Us world is a hero. He and Tommy murdered a LOT of innocent people. You think Abby's dad, a doctor who helped people, got the death he deserved? Of course not. The second game makes perfect thematic sense and is a beautiful, yet haunting and depressing continuation of the story. Its my favorite game ever.
