For the Carmina's, is that a piece of leather they've stitched on to the shoe on the vamp? Instead of doing a pinched stitch like on your bespoke pair.
All very important concepts you talk about here… i feel like I’m going thru a “foot width” transition period… and I’m skeptical to buy expensive shoes… so your video will totally be helpful when browsing for a new pair
Awesome, glad to hear. I’d definitely encourage you to keep an open mind and not limit it to only width. I had a similar issue and it wasn’t so much the width but I needed to go up a size in length with a shoe that had more generous insteps. Ultimately it told me I was wearing shoes a half size small all along. So I’d suggest trying a brand that has the ability to make last adjustments and talk to them about your pain points and existing sizing. You might be surprised what you find out.
Sigh. I got my first pair of loafers. Man I love them.. they fit nice and snug in the toebox without crushing my foot. This is super rare. BUT there is a buttload of heel slip because of my narrower heels. Maybe I need to size down 1/2 but I’m fearing the toe smash… I have low volume flat wide feet and the instep is too loose. Do I bother leather tongue pads and heel grips or just return?
It’s a tough call. Heel slip won’t completely go away if your heel is freely wiggling around, but if it’s a welted loafer as it breaks in, a normal amount of heel movement will subside because the sole with flex more. That said, I never found success in sizing down in loafers. Before I’d try pushing your foot down and back with pads on top, I’d think about a thin full leather insole, that will provide a more consistent adjustment throughout your foot, then spot fitting pads all over the lining of the shoe.
Well, I've experienced the issue with the instep just recently wearing my AE weave loafers. I didn't understand why, but now I do. I may have to give up on RTW, and focus on MTM (as bespoke would most likely be cost prohibitive).
Yea. You’d be surprised what trying a higher end brand could do. The last bad pattern grading caused a much better execution of the shoe. I mean this results in a better fitting rtw shoe. Depending on price and budget I’d explore TLB.

Thanks Irawan! Yeah I think the conventional wisdom to take a half size down works maybe half the time. For me personally, it never did. That premise is based on the loafer and TTS fit being graded the same, which many shoemakers will not do, they typically run their loafer patterns to fit consistently with their lace ups. All that said, the sentiment is true that you need it to be a more snug fit than a lace up. Selvedge reviews, hopefully soon! I’m not as well versed as I used to be in the denim world, but hopefully I’ll start to mix more denim into the channel

I have wide feet (about 10.7 cm wide, 27.5 cm long), so it's painful for me to find rtw loafers that fit. I always feel uncomfortable at my little toe😢
I always have to put tongue tabs and heel spacers in or they slip off. I have slightly thin feet with short toes, and my feet are differently sized by over 1 size. 😆 🤣
Do you size up Or size down? I have a wide foot in 10-10.5. I wear a black perry elis tassel loafer in 10 but unfortunately they hurt my feet. Regret not going a size up.

Funny enough I have only one pair I can use. A goodyearwelted penny loafer from Massimo Ditto from a special NY edition they did years ago. Don't know who the maker is but it's well above their usual offering. It's a full size lower than usual but it has broken in well and it fits very well. I'm just not too thrilled about the style
Question: I just got two pairs of Allen Edmonds, both the same size one narrow one wide. For some reason the narrow one is a bit tight and narrower, but it feels good while walking. The wide feels good on the foot, but slips a bit while walking. Which shoe would you rather keep in this case? I also have a heal cushion I can stick onto the wide one if need be. Do you know any loafer brands that accommodate for wider feet?
Hey Alexey, maybe I missed it, but why didn’t you go with the standard width if the narrow is narrow and the wide is too wide? That said it’s very hard to give definitive guidance in a situation like this but I’d say based on my own experience, general principles 1. If a shoe is painfully snug at any point, there’s very little chance it will change, leather breaks in and stretches but not a drastic amount. 2. Try the shoes on at different times of day, feet swell and have more “energy” throughout the day and will be surprising how the fit changes 3. If you’re going to modify the fit with pads on the lining, don’t move your foot up, or fill in space from the top, raise your foot up or push it back (meaning an all leather insole or a tongue pad. This will keep your foot in the most natural portion of the shoe There are plenty of shoemakers that would work but it’s a difficult fitting to perfect. In the sub $400 category, there’s TLB which could be a good classic aesthetic alternative to AE

I've given up RTW as my right and left require different fits. Bespoke is still an option though

My shoes just fall of. They didn't have a size 9
