😂😂😂😂. OMG! This was so funny! I’m glad are you sticking with your new found 4 legged friend! How sweet of you to have him with you overnight. I do hope he gets back to his original owner. Your compassion speaks volumes of your character, Stella! Forever onward young lady 👍👊🙌👏🐶
Stella if you read this, please do not consider keeping the dog. Please consider helping the owners to find it, if they are trying, by contacting and getting it to the nearest shelter. You are not a dog person, which is fine. Dog ownership is a big responsibility, and your responsibility right now is to get yourself 1800 miles to Maine at 25-30 miles per day. Sadly dog ownership is not taken seriously enough. In the US about 1,800 dogs are euthanized each day. If you ever decide that dog ownership is for you, a shelter dog will be waiting for you.
Sounds to me like Nyx Queen of the Night named her dog “Shadow”. Embrace it! He needs you, and you may very well need him. Trail is only trail because of the people. Shadow has become your trail family. Also, we’re seeing a new side of you Stella. It’s wonderful to see you experiencing adversity.
This is an unbelievable epic story. Definitely seems like a great dog, seems to have a good sense of who to follow! The trail provides, guess you needed a dog. 🐕🦺
Awww, he just knows you are a loving kind sweet soul with a good heart ❤️ Dogs are very intelligent and can sense humans that are kind and that's why he stayed with you. I hope you found someone or someplace like a shelter so he can be cared for and possibly locate his owner. Lots of love and good vibes to you Happy hiking Miss Nyx ✨️👣💚🍀✌️
Stella, I understand the situation. My Bluetick, and the Catahula hounds were just so personable. The love of nature and companionship is universal. Now they have passed on I realize how nice the pups were regardless of the trials on the trail. Like to think all good for Tally.
I've been following since Day 1 and this is my favorite Stella Hikes video so far. It just got funnier and funnier every time the dog showed back up! 😂😂 Dogs make everything better. Enjoy the companionship.
Somebody loves that dog, he's obviously healthy and well trained. Maybe you remind him of his owner so he feels comfortable with you? It's probably a bit difficult where you are but if you can find a vet nearby they could scan him for a microchip?
Made my day with this one. I've been chuckling all morning. Guess the dog was maybe teaching you about control. One of the hardest things to do is to impose your will on another being. Near impossible. Dog's gonna do what the dog's gonna do. I wouldn't worry too much. That dog is surely microchipped and will eventually get back to its owner. It's an un-neutered hound, well taken care of and trained. Worth a lot of money in that part of the world.
My old yellow lab decided to be a late entry on a 10k that went by our farm early one morning. He completed the entire race with the pack leaders, and they even gave him a medal and buckle. thankful for collar IDs.
I absolutely adore dogs! They give you such unconditional love! Enjoy your little buddy. He definitely decided to adopt you. He is absolutely beautiful! I having a dog it’s not as hard as you think. They just need some dog food every day and freshwater and good exercise and lots of love.❤❤❤
12:17 Call Animal Control or the Sheriff's Department for that county and have them meet you at the next trailhead to take the dog. That's all you can do. Otherwise the dog just keeps getting farther and father from their owner. Hopefully the dog was microchipped. On another channel I saw a couple of other RUclipsr hikers have that same problem. A Deputy Sheriff finally arrived, made a few phone calls and figured out who the dog's owner was, and called him. Then he showed up a couple of hours later to pick up the dog.
Had the same thing happen to me. Crazy beagle followed me for 40 miles nobo out of Harper's Ferry.. Stayed in Pen Mar and made several phone calls to spca, a couple counties animal control offices, and a few animal rescue organizations. No luck. Woke up on what would have been day 3, and he was gone. Never saw him again. Good luck with your dilemma. Enjoying your journey and videos. Happy trails 👣
The dog may have a microchip. Maybe a local vet can check if your new friend has an embedded chip. Some police departments also have them. I know you didn't plan on dealing with a dog, but it is my belief that animals chose us for a reason and are here to teach us. Thank you for your kindness and trying to help. As you know the best made plans are often interrupted. ❤️🐕❤️
O wit I see now, Stella gave the reason. She is uncomfortable around dogs. She needed something that only wanted to comfort her but that she was uncomfortable around, for whatever reason....that is a good dog. Also, I'm allergic to them too, some are worse than others. Leave them outside, occasionally have to change a shirt after petting them, etc etc
His instinct told him you would help. Thank you for being compassionate and feeding him and providing a comfy place to stay. Hopefully you can locate his owner. If you follow Nikki Delventhal, she had a similar experience. She had a dog show up out of nowhere and follow her all day on her desert hike. Three years later the dog, now named Camper, is her loyal companion and best friend.
Three possibilities: 1) a guardian spirit has joined you on your AT journey (for a reason). 2) you had said earlier in a video that you’re lonely. So the trail has provided. 3) a stray dog likes you. Because of your voice, or appearance or even pheromones. 4) maybe all of the above!
The fact that that dog has a collar and is off leash, means he probably lives in the area. He wasn’t in need of food. Dogs eat once a day. No need to do anything. He’s obviously well cared for and knows his way home. He was just being friendly. No worries 😉 I’d have loved it 😍
Awwww…. He’s so cute and he definitely loves you!!!! We were planning a thru hike in 2024 with our dog but his health has declined in the last year so we will hold off on our hike until his time with us is over😞. Houston our dog did do a section after Hot Springs and he loved it!!!! You are very special for taking good care of him!!!
Well, it was definitely an interesting day for you to have a dog follow you. I hope you were able to find someone to take care of him. Keep trekking. 😀
Glad to see you slow down and enjoy the past few days hiking with this pup. I think everyone needs to give Stella a break, seeing she is a good person she in good conscience couldn’t leave the pup on his own and did what she thought was right by bringing him back to the hostel with her. I wouldn’t have left him alone, in the dark while being picked up to be taken back to the hostel either. I believe she is being transparent by posting to RUclips and having her friend post to FB about this dog as well as the hostel owner knowing the situation. He obviously is well taken care of given his current state (looks extremely healthy) and has a collar on him. It’s unfortunate that there isn’t any identification on the collar. I believe she has tried to call on him but is doing the right thing by going to the vet in Damascus to have him checked out. They will surely run a scan on him to see if he is chipped or not. Knowing there are a lot of high kill shelters in the South I wouldn’t take this pup to a shelter either. Hopefully through the power of social media the owners will be found and reunited with this pup but in the mean time we all know she is doing right by the dog by bringing him in and seeing to his needs. If the owners are found then Stella has done a good thing and has learned that her heart is open to having a pup. Fate brought the pup into her life for a reason…. who knows where it goes to from here. Keep on trekking!!!
I came back to this video because I was thinking about you and the dog all day today. You know what, I think he found you to teach you something. I don't know what, but he found you for a reason. He also loves you, Stella. I can tell by the look in his eyes. Check out 7:37. That is pure love in those eyes. He knows you are a kind person. Animals can sense things like that. You may not be able to keep him permanently, and he may have owners already (I hope he wasn't abandoned) but for now, he is there to be your friend and your teacher - and get help from you to find his people (unless YOU turn out to be his people~) Anyway, he is absolutely adorable. Get him some dog food. You never know what's going to happen on the AT, right? "The Trail provides."
You got a hiking partner now the dog loves you he is a nice dog it was a really good video I enjoyed it keep them coming good luck with the dog keep very safe and have fun all my best Ramon
I giggled through this entire video. He likes you, maybe he knew you needed companionship on this leg. Sweet little fella, hopefully his owners find him.
He has a collar so if you can find someone to help take him to a vet they can check for microchip. He looks like he belong's to someone. I did this with a dog I found and it was microchipped and reunited with it's owner. I also wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying seeing all of the different hostels. After a long hike it must be so rewarding to stay at a hostel. Thanks for posting all of the hostels! Good luck with the doggie situation. It must be tough to know what to do.
I think that dog came to protect you. I grew up on a farm with 7 dogs.. maybe someone or something was following you, and the dog kept you safe. He was a guardian angel 👼
Stella, that dog is not a stray. If I were a guessing man I'd say that these dogs are the locals and are pretty use to getting feed on the trail. Once you get far enough away they'll turn back and pester the next hiker for food 🐕 Just don't feed them and they'll get bored and leave, he knows his way home. Now on a note that's not so popular. I ride my bicycle 🚲 all the time around my home. And there's this one particular house that a dog lived. He'd chase me down the road and snap at my ankles. He bit me one day and I'd had enough. So I bought a small pepper 🌶 spray. Let's just say one zap across the face and he never bothered me again. Take that advice how you like. 😉 not saying to do it, but it does the trick.
What a wonderful Hound. So sweet that he stayed with you all day. Hounds are protective in the woods and great to have around to scare off other animals. So sorry he bothered you. Wish I knew where he was . I would adopt him in a heart beat. Handsome fellow. Doing so good. Glad the new shoes are working. Keep heading north. Oh, hounds will go for miles. Their nose just leads the way. He may have a microchip if you could find someone to get him to a vet to scan him. 🐕👣🚶♀️🎒🏕⛰👍
If you still have the dog consider contacting a nearby animal rescue (not the county animal control.) Have him scanned for a microchip. He may have a microchip between his front shoulder blades. Good luck! 🐕🚶🏽♀️👍🏻🙂
I'm reminded of the study that Malcom Gladwell talks about in 'Blink' about seminary students who are taught about "the Good Samaritan" and then told to take an urgent message across campus to the Bishop. On their way they have to pass a person in distress who most of them pass by indifferently. The path to our goals will always be strewn with unexpected diversions, intrusions and obstacles. How we deal with these, define us. As another commentator stated "you''ll always remember 'Shadow'. And we shall always remember how you stepped outside of your comfort zone to care for a wanting dog.
I’ve had dogs fallow me on the trail before . He will eventually go on his way but he will find some one else . He’s a beautiful pup he’s guarding you he will follow till he finds someone better!
Actually, he is so cute and sweet! I think he sticks with you and maybe you will enjoy his company. If you absolutely cannot keep him, place him with foster family.
Awe...I loved the doggie drama, sorry it was hard on you but it was cute! Hoping it all worked out for the best for both of you! He may have been your guardian angel for that section of trail! Everything happens for a reason 😌 Be safe out there!
The dog has a collar and belongs to someone somewhere. The owners may be frantically looking for their dog. If there are kids in the family, they may be crying because their dog is nowhere to be found. I'd call the police dept and/or the humane society to report the dog and have them pick him up.
I reckon its important when ur on a thru hike to be open to the go with the flow philosophy, seems ur flowing with a dog, for a day at least. Yes, there is something to learn here.
I've watched a few through-hikes, this may be an all-time great episode. Not to make fun of your plight, but it's funny because it's true type stuff. Well fed and all, hope you find the owner. Is it possible the dog is habituated to the AT? Knows where it is? I've had this happen to me but certainly not for 20 miles and eventually it wanders off.
So funny from when you first had the dogs show up to when you had one on the bed… what an interesting day! You are a great hiker and I enjoy your vlogs!
🥰 This deserves an AT Oscar Award. He needed help, and your moral compass accommodated him. Animals can sense a good soul. Maybe he sensed your strength as well, and you inadvertently became the Aplha. I hope you find his owner. Bless your compassion. Did you hit 400?
Best video yet. You can't script something like this. Go with him until the original owner shows. If that doesn't happen you have a companion for a while longer. Great stuff.
Cute dog. Not neutered, has to be exhausted and hungry. You are a sweetheart to worry about him, even tho you didn't have a choice. Collar, might be chipped? Last year someone dumped 2 pups on the trail. Unfortunately it happens. I'm hoping this guy has an owner looking for him. Now his friend is still up on trail. Most hunting dogs have tracking g collars and antennas. Can't wait to hear the rest
Dogs are the best They are better than most people I would definitely see if he is micro-chipped they bring a lot of love and are also a lot of responsibility. i hope it works out for you. Da Breeze
The dog felt safe with you. There are many possibilities mentioned in the comments but as a dog owner it seems to me that he needed you to help him get home. Dogs with collars have worried owners. Please check with a vet or rescue in the area to get them to check the list of lost dogs in the area. At this point he is getting farther away from home and definitely needs food and water regardless of if he is your responsibility. Hoping another dog lover can take him for you and you aren’t too allergic. Dogs are wonderful loving companions. I know if I hike the AT I would definitely attract the strays. Thanks for caring
Oh what a heartwarming scene❤, dogs are absolutely wonderful loyal animals. So, I hope it works out well for you both either way. Obviously no info. on the dogs collar, although there is one other possibility. The dog can be scanned for a chip, if registered it may have all the owner information needed. He may be a blessing for you. In the end another good day.
Something similar happened to me when I was on a walk around the neighborhood. I didn't see which house the dog came from and it followed me all the way home. Fortunately she had a phone number on her collar and I called them. I was wondering what I would do if they didn't answer the message but it worked out and they came to pick her up.
That was really interesting! There had to be some reason the dog wanted to be with you because the dog could have chosen to go with a dog person but it stayed with you. Really interesting. I hope the hostel people or somebody helped you out with this situation because hiking with a dog would present a lot of extra challenges. I hope it worked out!
😂😂😂😂. OMG! This was so funny! I’m glad are you sticking with your new found 4 legged friend! How sweet of you to have him with you overnight. I do hope he gets back to his original owner. Your compassion speaks volumes of your character, Stella! Forever onward young lady 👍👊🙌👏🐶

This is amazing! I’m glad you decided to feed him!
So sweet you brought him with you to the hostel. Curled up on the bed is ADORABLE!
This video made me smile big and truly brightened my day. ❤
Love it! He is freaking cute. There is nothing better than a dogs love.

So cute, the dog was trying to adopt you. You are really such a caring person the way you were so worried for the dog.💜❤️
The last photo of dog in the bed, all curled up, is so ADORABLE. He LOVES you Stella. Come on, take him to New Hemisphere
So funny!!!
I would feel the exact same way you are feeling about the dog following you. Hope the dog gets reconnected with his owner.

So funny from when you first had the dogs show up to when you had one on the bed… what an interesting day! You are a great hiker and I enjoy your vlogs!
Him checking in with you is amazing.please receive him as a gift. He’s going ahead of you protecting you.
One dog is worth a thousand friends.
We had a hound dog follow us 20-some miles into Fontana Dam.
Frosted Cinnamon was my fave tart too.
Looks like AT is becoming "hostel" environment!
One thing I know about dogs; they can really sense the people that can be trusted. So, if that dog likes you...I would like you!! 🤣
Dogs know good people, he will need water too. Take good care of him he trusts you :)
You have a kind heart.
Yes Stella, get out of the comforter zone and start following in love with our best friends doggies.
I am same as you, dogs make me uneasy esp. big dogs! I would have died LOL. But a living creature in need presents an opportunity to help 🙃
Dogs are the best
They are better than most people
I would definitely see if he is micro-chipped
they bring a lot of love and are also a lot of responsibility.
i hope it works out for you.
He’s protecting you you got a vibe now
Pets know who nice people are! ❤
Absolutely love the ending. ❤😂 😊
Good morning! Hahaha, looks like you had a companion for awhile there. Definitely has a cute face and I hope he found his people!
