I much prefer your third granny square. This is my preferred method. My only difference is instead of doing the half double in the corner before joining I do a double crochet. It makes for less bulk, puts the hook exactly where you want it but without bulk and gives 2 spaces just like the other 3 corners. It makes the corner space identical but that is what works for me.☺️🧶
Same here, the third option is my favorite. And I'll definitely try your suggestion with the double crochet instead of the hdc to close the round. Thank you so much for your input ❤️☺️
Subscriber #512 here❣️ Thanks for showing everyone the things that have always bothered me about magic ring, chain 3-4 ring, chain 3 vs extended single/double stitch and the slip stitch. I hate the slip stitch in a granny square ❣️Bless your ❤️🙏🏼 BRAVO 👏🏼
Aww thank you, you're the sweetest. It makes me really happy that you like my top 3 and that you feel the same about some techniques that always bothered me too. Sending you big hugs 🤗❤️
Taking this one stage further: When needing to change colours, “end” each round (as you have shown), then, in a completely new part of the square, begin doing a STANDING stitch with the new colour. This, (along with the alternatives you have shown us here), have been game changing for me!
That's exactly how I do my color changes except that I start directly from where I ended the round. I made a video about it that will be published in just a few hours 🎉 But I agree, it really is a game changer and looks so much better
That has got to be one of the most awkward magic ring i have ever seen. If you found it hard, then just let me tell you are actually makign it harder than it has to be.
Agreed 🙈🤣 that's why I said that this is probably not the most elegant way of making a magic ring. But it works for me. To each their own way, right? I tried dozens of magic ring tutorials that all claim to be "the best" or "the easiest". But only this one really worked for me. And who knows? One day, I might see a different, less awkward way and can adapt it to my future crochet method 🤔
NO MORE CHAIN THREE! NO MORE CHAIN THREE! NO MORE CHAIN THREE! The magic ring. Then 'fake' double crochet to start the round. Closing the round with a half double crochet. The finishing touch: the sew in finish. My sorry looking Granny Squares are a thing of the past. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
YES! No more chain 3 😁 that video and all the tips and tricks changed everything for me and every single crochet piece looks so much better 🤗 I'm glad you like it
Awesome tips, thank you so much! I learned basic crochet as a child 50 years ago but I'm only just taking it up again and I'm completely new to granny squares. This tutorial is invaluable 👍🏼
Hey, thank you so much. I bought the darning needle at a local fair but found it online. It's from Katia but there are similar ones from Knitpro as well. Here's a link: www.katia.com/DE/accessoires-set-aus-3-wollnadeln-mit-%C3%B6hr-aus-nylon.html?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwzva1BhD3ARIsADQuPnXU0jMrjhyMqKa5luPnjhoBEHmRDgWF9IJB90Cgsmppbz3RWE_1t1oaArKfEALw_wcB
I thought the idea of a magic ring was to have two strands that you crochet around/into. Less bulky, still strong. At about 20:07, I definitely don't like the chain 3 "Dennis Lipstitch"* version, and have always tried various and new things to avoid ugliness. Once Upon A Time, I did not mind going front to back and turning my squares because it offered texture that I didn't know how to do yet, and chaining three and turning the work did change the look of a flat chain face. Whenever there was an end to sew in or a color change, I could change the look of that chain 3 with some creative needlepointing to mimic a more proper dc. * with your accent, I heard " 'den' a slipstitch" as "Dennis Lipstitch". I don't know if there are any Dennis Lipstitches in the world, and my apologies to him/them, but, that will always be the name for that ugly technique. It's forever in my mind now, as, many things that come with a laugh, do stay.
🤣🤣 you crack me up! To Dennis Lipstitch: Whoever and wherever you are, I might use your name as a new persona or as my drag name lol 🤣🤣 But you are right, as crocheters we are always curious how things look like when changing little things. And in the end it always is an individual preference. It's like a buffet: you take what you want and what you think looks good together. In terms of Dennis Lipstitch: I'm not that into him tbh, not my type, but other might still like him 🤣🙈 and that's totally fine
I'm glad you liked my recommendation and my husband laughed when you said how the hell is this gonna work. He says that to me all the time. If you need any other tricks let me know. I just might have something for you.
I do! It really changed my crochet work and looks so much better and a lot faster too. Thank you again big time. And I'm happy I made your husband laugh. After 36 years of doing crochet I still find new things and tricks which is exactly why I love crochet so much. Best hobby / craft ever 🤗
@@totally_fierce I'll keep watching and see what I can do for you. I try to help anyone I can. I have tried other creators on here with the information I gave you. Nothing has ever come of it until now. Have you tried the solid square yet? I hope I wrote the instructions well enough for you to understand. Thanks again from the simple man in the States. I always did crochet in my free time but since I got sick with cancer it has helped me more then with just passing time. After the rounds of chemo I lost the feeling in my hands and feet called neuropathy. I was in able to write or even sign my name. I picked a hook up and thru intense concentration I started to crochet. It looked bad. I stayed with it and now I am almost back to normal. I cannot look away I always have to focus. I'm better now. Doing immuno-therapy and the Dr says I'm going into remission. I have a cancer that has a 10% survival rate.
Hi, so lovely to have come across your tutorial on the granny squares, my preferred method is your last one and i also join with half double crochet stitch too but like what Debbie suggests i will be trying out with a double crochet, thanks so much, and nice meeting you 👍🙌😍🙏🏻
Thank you, nice meeting you too. And yes, always try to see what works best for you. I tried the DC instead of the HDC. It's definitely a good option, but for my granny squares, I'll stick to the HDC. On a different project, the DC may be just perfect 🤗
Great tips. I've struggled so much with the magic ring so I'm anxious to try your method. I have struggled with granny squares and never been happy with my results. Your tips are timely and very helpful.
Agreed, it took me a long time to find a way to make a magic ring that worked for me. It's not very elegant but somehow works. Try it, sometimes awkward is just perfect 👌 Wishing you lots of fun and joy making my kind of granny squares 🤗
There is another way to make a fake double crochet. Pull up a loop the same height as a double crochet. Then twist the hook around that loop clockwise once. Make sure you hold on to the at twisted loop with a finger so it doesn’t untwist and work it as you would a normal double crochet. I think you will find it looks more like a DC and you have more control over the height. You will still have to two loops at the top to work the HDC into at the last corner. ❤
I've been watching your tips over and over again. I've got to share your channel as soon as I have tried them out. I am so grateful to you for sharing. 🙏
I know 🙈 a few weeks ago someone pointed that out to me and I had no idea that I was doing it that way 🙈🤣 I even made a video about that: ruclips.net/video/vyyICxHjtiM/видео.htmlsi=EaHdnbEh81_M6Wod
Hi, thank you for your question. Each crochet stitch has a different height. The double crochet stitch, which is mainly used for granny squares, is quite high. So when you start a round, the loop is at the bottom, and you have to find a way to go up to continue with double crochets. To create that height, you can either chain 3, which has about the same height as a double crochet, or you make the fake double crochet / stacked single crochet. For beginners the chain 3 is easier but always looks a bit off compared to the following regular double crochets. The fake double crochet is basically 2 single crochets on top of each other and looks more like a regular double crochet in your work. I hope this helps? 🙏
I do the hdc join. If I use starting chains I skip them and join to the first real dc doing it this way makes the slip stitch (if you use one ) sit on top of the chains making them look more like an actual dc
I have been doing mine like this for about 5 years now. After learning the traditional way about 50 ears ago from my mother, like you , I hated the knot at the top. I also do not like the look of slip stitches in a granny square. Thank you for this.
Aww, you are so very welcome. And I agree, the knot in the end always bugged me and made the whole granny square look off. It looks waaaay better without. 🤗
I really learned how to make a decent granny square. I have watching video after video, but mine never looked good. Now I know why! Thank you so much for sharing.
No, he goes over that. Make a half double crochet into fake double. That sets the position perfectly to create the first cluster. Finish the cluster once back around before closing with/a half double crochet.. hope this helps View the video again. He goes over it a couple times
Hey, absolutely not. A lot of people turn to go to the next round. I used to turn too but never liked how it looked. That's why I showed it in 3 ways to see the difference 🤗
Thank you for putting all these tips together -- the combination makes the square look SO much more polished. I've crocheted for a long time (years) and never liked my granny squares because they just looked "sloppy"... I feel like I can do this and make them better now.
I feel you 💯 before combining those 3 techniques my granny squares never appealed to me, something was always off. I'm glad you like my video and I'm sure you can use the tips and tricks to make beautiful granny squares too ☺️🤗
Thank you. Very inspiring. You are a good teacher.

Would love to see you teach the changing colours in this perfect granny square

Hey there, I have tried that technique, but haven't cracked it yet 🙈 I'm sure one day I'll get it. Thank you so much for your tip 👍
Thank you for the tips.
My pleasure, thank you too 🤗
The hdc corner join is actually a common one in Japanese “motif” charted patterns.
Wow, that's interesting, thank you for sharing 🤗
Awesome techniques you've shared. Can you show how you would handle different color rounds?
Thank you, and yes, I'm going to make another video with different colors for each round. Coming very soon 😉🤗
Thank you for the ideas.

Yarn under vs yarn over...if you are self taught, you may not notice your second is a yarn under...vs a yarn over!
I know 🙈 a few weeks ago someone pointed that out to me and I had no idea that I was doing it that way 🙈🤣 I even made a video about that: ruclips.net/video/vyyICxHjtiM/видео.htmlsi=EaHdnbEh81_M6Wod
Beginner here. Why can't you just do a double crochet to start each round instead of doing the fake double crochets? Thanks!
