He was great as an actor and from what it appears, equally great as a human being.

A friend of mine was a child actor back in the day and he worked with Clint on a movie. He said he was a great guy and was always helpful in all the scenes they were together. I bought a bottle of Clint’s wine and gave it to my friend for his 65th birthday. I had asked for an autograph from Clint on a picture I had of the two of them. Clint no longer did autographs at that time, but signed it anyway, as a favor for my friend! Great guy for sure.
Seems like a nice enough guy, especially his near-death experience story which was interesting, but who knows anyway. He is a stranger unless you have dealings with him.

The relationship between the 2 on-screen is great, they're like Butch & Sindance a decade before Newman & Redford.
