  • Saman Amel is a Scandinavian brand that wants to change the way men think about suits. As its first ready-to-wear collection lands exclusively at MR PORTER, we travelled to Stockholm to discover more about the made-to-measure atelier putting Sweden on the tailoring map.

    They do make a good case. Most of us can't buy bespoke and the selection we get is usually stiff suits, even if they are wool

    I love seeing clothing from the perspective of other cultures. Here in the States, I wouldn't say we are sheltered from other styles, but I think we can expand dramatically. Now that the financial world is going more 'business casual," I would like to see more like this around large cities.

      You are so right on about that. Look at The Beatles. They went from wearing Leather Outfits, then got a makeover with suits on Carnaby Street which is synonomous with Britain especially with fashion, then they went through the sargent pepper phase as seen in the video for strawberry fields and the like. In the 1950's and 1960's america was very conservative with fashion.

    First time hearing about this brand.
    While I do think they do a good job at their thing, I don't think they're re-thinking the suit necessarily.
    From my perspective, I think they're still too convervative in their approach and are not really exploring radically different ideas.
    Just a quick glance from their pieces, you see that it's not very different from other clothing.
    Sure, it might be of high quality, good cuts, nice drape, but there's no "re-thinking".

    • @hayden760

      Agree, still looking stiff, not flowy hence not modern. Don't need more suit, need more unstructured, relaxed fit (oversized might work depending on length and fabric) blazer or double breasted in beyond neutral colors...

      "Rethinking the suit" is the name of the corresponding video series. I don't think they are actually setting the bar for the companies to be revolutionary, rather than having tried to find an eye-catching title for their mini-series

    I wouldn't call this anything revolutionary. The Armoury, Drake's, and especially Ring Jacket as well as many other Japanese-Ivy brands have been doing this for years.

    • @Enrico-
      @Enrico- 11 месяцев назад

      I don't see any resemblance to what Drake's does (or the Armoury). They have a very particular taste which is very modern and scandinavian.

      @@lyledeyounges1276 If you think that's the aim of the brand then you completely missed the point. The concept is to contrast with the current standards of bespoke and high end ready to wear by offering an alternative price point and level of tailoring/customization in their clothing, along with what most people consider to be "scandanavian" design philosophies in clothing which is a very heavy focus on texture, fit, and how various pieces interact with each other without necessarily being part of a "set".

    This fit will date very badly, modern stuff caters to lgbtq people only. I don't want to look like them or have them design for me, I'll stick with the timelessness of Oxxford Clothes and certain Ralph Lauren pieces.
