Tip #11 "reading middle grade as an adult is fine" The guilt has been overwhelming! I loved reading then mastered skimming academic reading and now lost my love for it, but this was so encouraging! I am hopeful now 💪 I am trying to get my 8 year old nephew into reading and have been so tempted to re-read the time machine sitting on my desk which he returned recently but in my 30's 🙈 I thought "nah" lol. Thanks for the tips..love from the caribbean Hannah🌷
i used to read a harry potter book a day when I was in elementary. I just stopped reading for no reason after, because I had no energy. I burnt out from reading crazy long things. I want to get back into reading and go hard in the paint lol. Thank you.
2 things that helped me read are 1) read books where they made a movie on them. In 2019, I listened to a great youtuber who narrated The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy-up to book 4-and it's thanks to loving the movie with Martin Freeman. It got me interested and hyped to listen to the books. And 2) instrumenral music helps because it sets the tone. I'm currently reading a book trilogy where I'm using the Resident Evil safe themes where I see it best fits a particular section.
I struggle to read due to my severe depression and busy lifestyle, but I love reading. Its just the fact I have to read a lot of books in school so I don’t have energy for my own, and a lot of times I have to read 6 hours straight the day before its due because I didn’t wanna read the kind of books my school gives me. I’m trying to finish a 90+ and still ongoing book series, it has taken 2 years to get through 2 and a half book. I’m probably rereading the first 3 and buying the next this year. Atleast the book I’m currently reading in school is a high fantasy (got to choose myself) which is a genre I actually like instead of all the realistic novels. But theres 14 hours left on it and its due tomorrow so..
What little love I had left for reading after gaming entered my life in middle school was completely eradicated once high school crushed my love for reading and turned it into an opportunity to use sparknotes. But in college I took the philosophy route and ended up restoring my childhood love of books. My parents doubted the practical utility of studying philosophy, but it has totally saved my literacy, creativity, and love for learning, and I doubt that many other college students could relate. So maybe I'm out of a job now immediately after gradation, but when I find one someday, I'll be mentally equipped to handle anything thrown at me. So take that, practicality argument.
Ah, it’s quite easy to get distracted by technology. I also like the idea of having certain times for reading. But I think it’s also important to have a shift in mindset - reading should be something you WANT to do, not what you feel you NEED to do :)
My favorite genre is high fantasy, but I get really discouraged when I get to the end of the year and ive read less than 20 books, but most of those were 1000 page books. I also feel that a page number goal can be good so if you hate a book you can move on without feeling like damn I need to finish it.
i decided during a recent move, "huh, i might wanna listen to stephen king's 'it' to pass the time, it's a tome!" i've read pretty regularly since i finally finished that book. it seems like the more books i finish, the more excited i get to cross more and more off the list!
funny story tho, when i read "it" in 2016, i tore through it in three weeks. this time? SEVEN. it was a slog, i didn't like it nearly as much this time & kept stopping. but finishing it made me feel like i accomplished something, & the struggle pushed me to read more
What I have been struggling recently is willing to drop books I eventually did not like, instead of forcing myself to finish it. I have been buying new books I am very excited to read, but couldn't read them because I've placed myself in this loyalty lock as I put it. xD No. 4 is a woke moment for me.
Agh! Hannah this is perfect I haven’t read forever and needed to hear All of This. I’ve been reading so sporadically when I also used to read like a book a day, I was that kid in middle school who brought two books to school everyday and would read it walking in the halls sjhsidjsbs and then I started writing and that stopped!☹️ But, there’s hope yet because I got into a series where the first book I read pretty slowly but the second I read in a day and the third I read in 5 hours so you know what even though that was months ago I’m gonna try again!😂😂 Anyway, thanks Hannah!!!💜💜
Thank you for your thoughts on this and for creating this video. Lots of good and usable takeaways for me. My dog also does weird breathing sounds when he wants something.
I'm trying to get back into reading at the moment, but I'm finding it kind of hard and it's not because I'm reading books that I don't like, but at the end of each day I become absolutely exhausted because we have lots of work and my bus journey takes quite a long time and I find it very hard to concentrate. I'm an A-Level student currently, and I do enjoy reading, but I feel like I need try again and allow myself gradually tk get back into it.
I was reading on my iPad using the kindle app. And it was too easy to get distracted. Then my partner gifted me a kindle paperwhite. So I can read my kindle books but not surf the web or play games. My reading has increased significantly
When I was in high school or middle school, I hated reading because it was school related. But now, since I’m older (21 older) I want to start reading, I have a paper books I have in hand. But I really don’t know how to get back into reading. When I was little, like 15/16, (I guess I wouldn’t have said little) I used to read fanfics on wattpad on my iPad and still do sometimes, but I don’t have any on hand. 😭
I really enjoyed this video! I especially like your sentiment about reading whatever suits you. While I like plenty of classics, I don't like the idea of "a classic canon of literature." It's a little smug and elitist. At one time those "classics" were contemporary, and (in many cases) pop fiction of their age. I'd rather simply judge each story on its own terms regardless of when it was written or what genre it fits into. Ultimately it's all the same result of the human creative impulse, and to have a hierarchy of literature is antithetical to the beauty of that creative impulse we all share.
I remember a time in my life where my mum used to come into my room in the middle of the night, beeing angry, telling me to stop reading and go to sleep blabla. I read until I fell asleep and the tiredness was worth it. Idk what happend tho.
lol I am struggling with getting back into reading because my old favorites were THICK. Now one of my favorite series has a new book coming out soon and I am trying to catch up after stopping reading for Pharmacy school. I love audiobooks but I struggle with them for deep fantasy books because it’s hard to understand what are words I don’t understand vs new fantasy words.
I certainly did more writing than reading last year and I can tell my writing improves by reading more. This is a great video! (I can already feel the struggle of forcing myself into reading by preferring the stories through visual media.)
@@HannahLeeKidder It gave me a reason to want to read and there were other reasons to attend them. Such as showing off about all kinds of reading related topics. My Sister and Mom have bought me many books that I have not read yet. My sister bought me Lord of the Rings for my birthday last year, and I Have Hardly read any of the book. Im on the first chapter.
The Rebecca movie screwed up the ending but Rebecca's room had an excellent design. The Hitchcock film was better but even that was kinda short. The book was a slow burn and the adaptions were all too quick, especially in the second half.
there it is. theres the phone myth. before the internet, people channel surfed, before that, people browsed the library, before that, people would talk to each other and watch the birds at the same time. theres also people synonimizing "phone" with "tiktok" when phones can do so much more. in fact, my phone helped get me into reading, along with way more important struggles its helped me through. its why im frustrated every time people say phones are the root of all distraction and evil
If someone said they wanted to read more and the majority of the population spent five hours a day throwing rocks, I’d say, hey maybe we can throw fewer rocks
I felt so bad. My husband gave me some books from his personal library and I had to give up on it because it wasn't my speed. I haven't really read since because I still feel guilty. How do you get over this?
Unrelated, but: I wish I lived in such countries! 5-6 hours in college is a lot? Here students literally start studying 12-14 hours daily in around 10th grade to qualify the national exams. These exams are written by more than a million students and only couple thousand spots 😭 So competitive!
the hard part is when you force yourself to read in a foreign language to improve your reading skills then be better at this language. Any Suggestions brothers and sisters?
I'm in the same boat as you - it's really difficult! 😂 But I've found finding simple readers aimed at beginners super helpful. I'm learning German, and "Leichte Erzählungen" by Margaret Fröhlich has been an absolute godsend, despite being old. Also, if you're getting bored of the easy beginner books, try getting a copy of a book you really like in your target language, and then read it side by side with your language's version. It'll be super difficult, but sorta fun at the same time. Also, try and read stuff through once first before looking anything up. Whether it's a paragraph or a chapter. This teaches your brain to actually read the language rather than translate it. The perfect level for you should be ~95-98% understandable, hence the beginner readers. But once again, as long as you find reading something fun and motivating, that's all that really matters. Good luck! 😁

i used to read a harry potter book a day when I was in elementary. I just stopped reading for no reason after, because I had no energy. I burnt out from reading crazy long things. I want to get back into reading and go hard in the paint lol. Thank you.
When I was little i use to love to read and now I want that back
2 things that helped me read are 1) read books where they made a movie on them.
I loved your video and your friendly and welcoming manner and helpful ideas! Wish me luck as I learn to be a reader of fiction and classics again.
I'm glad I'm not the only person having this issue. I read all the time as a child/teenager. Now it's like I have no attention span.
All I read nowadays is Little Birds and I’m fine with it
lucas PLEASE
Thank you for the help, I’ve been working out a lot and it’s fun but I’ve been wanting to get into reading a lot more, thank you
What little love I had left for reading after gaming entered my life in middle school was completely eradicated once high school crushed my love for reading and turned it into an opportunity to use sparknotes.
Your realism makes me want to actually listen to you, so thank you for cutting through the bubbly bullshit and being authentic☺️. Lots of good tips!
Ah, it’s quite easy to get distracted by technology. I also like the idea of having certain times for reading. But I think it’s also important to have a shift in mindset - reading should be something you WANT to do, not what you feel you NEED to do :)
Great tips here. Set a monthly goal. Read what you genuinely like. Read a small book first. Keep a log. I will start doing these!
My favorite genre is high fantasy, but I get really discouraged when I get to the end of the year and ive read less than 20 books, but most of those were 1000 page books. I also feel that a page number goal can be good so if you hate a book you can move on without feeling like damn I need to finish it.
i decided during a recent move, "huh, i might wanna listen to stephen king's 'it' to pass the time, it's a tome!"
i've read pretty regularly since i finally finished that book. it seems like the more books i finish, the more excited i get to cross more and more off the list!
funny story tho, when i read "it" in 2016, i tore through it in three weeks. this time? SEVEN. it was a slog, i didn't like it nearly as much this time & kept stopping. but finishing it made me feel like i accomplished something, & the struggle pushed me to read more
What I have been struggling recently is willing to drop books I eventually did not like, instead of forcing myself to finish it. I have been buying new books I am very excited to read, but couldn't read them because I've placed myself in this loyalty lock as I put it. xD
No. 4 is a woke moment for me.
Agh! Hannah this is perfect I haven’t read forever and needed to hear All of This. I’ve been reading so sporadically when I also used to read like a book a day, I was that kid in middle school who brought two books to school everyday and would read it walking in the halls sjhsidjsbs and then I started writing and that stopped!☹️ But, there’s hope yet because I got into a series where the first book I read pretty slowly but the second I read in a day and the third I read in 5 hours so you know what even though that was months ago I’m gonna try again!😂😂 Anyway, thanks Hannah!!!💜💜
dude I used to steady have a book in my hand no matter where I was, then it just ENDED
Gonna start forcing myself to read again, now!
I’m re reading some of my childhood favourites
Thank you sooooooo much for this video. I'm ready to put myself back into reading and I have a good feeling that your tips will help me a lot !!!!! 🥰
I just discovered you and this is random but I really like the way you talk and express yourself... totally gonna check out your books
Seriously… thank you so much! I will try it out I hope it will work out so much
Watched this video so many times. Muted it after the first🥴 ❤️
Thank you ❤️! Blessings to All!
I needed this.
I'm an A-Level student currently, and I do enjoy reading, but I feel like I need try again and allow myself gradually tk get back into it.
listening to audio books has gotten me back into reading
Very good tips. Thank you!
This was so helpful. Thank you so much
I’m grateful 🙏🏻
I read a full book the other night and the TEARS I shed, I tell you!! It has been literal years!
not even fanfic???
@@HannahLeeKidder very different. I have read SO much fanfic this year. Revisited some favorites. Man, remember A Different Landing?
@@KailorAurelius I was thinking about that YESTERDAY
@@HannahLeeKidder this is your sign to reread it. Ugh, so good.
i did a book in two weeks for the year that shall not be named
I wanna up that this year 😤
oh shit!
I stopped reading cause I travel less during the day, I got a kindle and madea list, hopefully this will help
my brother, i think he invented a way to trick yourself into reading a by saying to yourself "i'm going to read one chapter" its really useful
I'm using my summer holidays (southern hemisphere) to get back into reading.
This was so helpful thank you!
im leaving a comment underneath hannah didnt tell me to do this i am doing this out of free will cough cough
it's just bc you felt inspired that's all
@@HannahLeeKidder BAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH true o-o
Thank you for this!!
My reading tends to be at extreme odds. I love horror and classics, but not much in between. 🤷♀️
I remember a time in my life where my mum used to come into my room in the middle of the night, beeing angry, telling me to stop reading and go to sleep blabla. I read until I fell asleep and the tiredness was worth it. Idk what happend tho.
so helpful :) thank you!
I feel like part of it is adding some type of exploration back into reading
lol I am struggling with getting back into reading because my old favorites were THICK. Now one of my favorite series has a new book coming out soon and I am trying to catch up after stopping reading for Pharmacy school. I love audiobooks but I struggle with them for deep fantasy books because it’s hard to understand what are words I don’t understand vs new fantasy words.
Thank you!
Thank you 🌸
When I read number 8, I saw the plug in coming a mile a way. :D you look great Hannah Happy New year!
needed this TY
I love listening to audio books but I wish I could read
Very helpful
Thank you
I certainly did more writing than reading last year and I can tell my writing improves by reading more. This is a great video!
(I can already feel the struggle of forcing myself into reading by preferring the stories through visual media.)
reading is writing food!
@@HannahLeeKidder Yes ma'am!
I have a problem remembering what I read 9 times out of 10.
Great ideas. Now I can't go to a book club anymore. There's no substitute for actually being able to go to a book club in real life (not online)
aw that's a bummer
@@HannahLeeKidder It gave me a reason to want to read and there were other reasons to attend them. Such as showing off about all kinds of reading related topics. The son of the guy who wrote the Danny Fox series attended one, and I could show off that I knew more about the series than he did (he couldn't even remember correctly which cub was based on him).
I was never a kid to read and I’m trying to get myself to read
My Sister and Mom have bought me many books that I have not read yet. My sister bought me Lord of the Rings for my birthday last year, and I Have Hardly read any of the book. Im on the first chapter.
I read like 20 books during the school year but then summer comes and I read 2
Lmao we also have to work several jobs to pay for the insane school fees. There aren't many full-time students
@@HannahLeeKidder That isn't a good system though. Having SO much debt just to attain an education! Crazy!
@@faisaparveenali9285 got bad news about the economic structure of every system in this country
Great video.
I wanna read so bad but when I start reading I forget what I’m reading and then I am 100 pages into a book and I have no clue what I just read.
I love to kill a mockingbird in 6th grade I was obsessed
the hard part is when you force yourself to read in a foreign language to improve your reading skills then be better at this language. Any Suggestions brothers and sisters?
I'm in the same boat as you - it's really difficult! 😂
But I've found finding simple readers aimed at beginners super helpful.
Good luck! 😁
Bet
I wish there was a book club for struggling readers
in 2021 we CAN read
or we can HOLD A BOOK in PUBLIC and PRETEND
ok maybe not 2021... but in 2022 we CAN read too !!
I want to get back to writing again, yet got stuck in youtube.... and a lack of laptop.... the last one solved...
Why do you want to read?
Me: I don’t… but my school forces me to…
I used to love reading but now I can't even read a page without getting bored or tired :/
Sometimes I just sit down and reread Starlight
Not another word I will cry
