      Madeline and Callum are both incredible, and delivered bone chilling performances in Cabaret '23. However, I think MB is a bit too young and youthful in appearance to be entirely convincing as the confused about love as well as vulnerable resulting from a lifetime of mediocrity. Brewer is slightly too confident and her naivity more easily excused and understood by her youth.

      That's an interesting take, but I would direct Sally as a mediocre singer in her cabaret performances and progress her thoughout the play, and have her singing full voice in the non-Cabaret scenes. BTW, am I the only theater kid who thought "Don't tell Mama" was Sally's backstory? So I got confused when the later dialogue contradicted the lyrics of her song.

    I was blessed to see the original Broadway with Jil Hayworth and Joel Gray on a high school field trip. To say it was shocking, is the understatement of the century. It is interesting how what was only suggested in the mid-1960's original has now become quite obvious. The play is a masterpiece about intolerance. Well done, and thanks for the reminders.

    • @allshookup1640

      It’s also important to the show because all of these groups were greatly targeted by the Nazis so it adds another layer to the show. They shut down the cabarets and shows. Many performers were arrested if they were gay men (or suspected to be). Some lesbians were but they were not prosecuted nearly as badly as gay men fortunately. In the original show, the beautiful show girls probably could have become “respectable” ladies if they left Berlin or started over and escaped Nazi persecution. But these people are “freaks.” Exactly the type of people who would be targeted as political prisoners or some other reason just to get rid of them because they went against Nazi ideals. They’d make something up if they had to.

      Long after the angriest bunch abandoned fun art and theater, for bland and boring politics and labeling everything woke or whatever... they saw the Cast of Caberet and said, "I wish I could have some of that."
      Then they saw who it was that's dancing about and having fun, so they were all "ewww, what is this, I want all hot girls, hot hot hot. Make it how I would like it"
      *and then they were given that just that, to which they later said*
      "Oh dear, think of the children, this smut is too much, I wish it were less provocative, leaving some room for imagination."
      *so they stopped being so risque and once again, gave the audience what it wanted to which the audience barked*
      "Wow, whatever happened to letting the audience have what they want? Everyone is far too sensitive these days. Try to live a little for crying out loud."

    When i was in london, i got a chance to see this live. Me and my dad both. Had to leave early, dad got too freaked out, i was ready to stay the whole time. Amazing performance, the emcee was flawless, but each performer was awesome. Id love to see it done in the states and see if its anyhow different, either less or more showy and risque

    • @allshookup1640
      @allshookup1640 Год назад +1

      It’s usually not as showy as this. The makeup and outfits are REALLY toned up in this revival. Usually they just are wearing normal clothing for the time. Yes, they do wear risqué outfits at the KitKat club, but all time appropriate and normal in a way. Beside the emcee’s strappy harness.
      This production is way more campy and outrageous. That’s why it’s so polarizing.

    • @ajcook3146
      @ajcook3146 Год назад

      @allshookup1640 Really? Hell I thought this is just how a production of Cabaret is supposed to look like, but I'm not a big Broadway guy so...
      Maybe they just go harder in the UK. Either way it was an awesome experience, I can understand tho why some people would be so put off by it

    • @allshookup1640
      @allshookup1640 Год назад +3

      @@ajcook3146 it’s not that they go harder in the UK this is just a different version. When you revive a show anywhere, you can make loads of creative changes if you’d like to for your individual production. This is just the latest revival and this what they chose to do for this individual production. Cabaret is coming back to Broadway in the US in 2024. With the same creative directors as this production, the show will be relatively the same as it is here, but they can tweak it however they choose for the Broadway version. It’s not a matter of location, it’s individual production and creative director’s choices. Broadway hasn’t had Cabaret on Broadway since 2014. It has been on Broadway and the West End several times every time it is different while the story is the same. Costumes, choreography, lighting, line delivery, makeup, hair etc.

    I saw it in London a month ago. Didn’t care for the costumes and frankly left during the intermission. The Emcee was the best part, and the transformation of the whole theater into the Kit Kat club was unforgettable

    I think the emcee is the most fluid and malleable character in all of Broadway. It's like New York pizza it maybe the exact same ingredients. But it is never the same flavor. The emcee is the same thing the character is same for every reading but the actors bring the flavor and life to the emcee.

    This was fantastic! I can't remember listening to this Sally Bowles' song before, though, despite having watched both the movie and the Sam Mendes' revival version.
    A thought about the MC: I find interesting that they keep casting more conventionally attractive actors in a part that was initiated by Joel Grey (who, like we Cubans like to say, nunca tuvo quince), yet Grey's iconic performance remains unrivaled.

      It's not a competition, they don't cast intending to rival Grey but give their own spin on the role.

    Madeline Brewer as Sally with Eddie Redmayne as Emcee is I think best versions. Stop in at a deli get a corn beef on an onion role then walk to play after go to speakeasy drink old fashions smoke lucky strikes…. Would be best night ever

      agreed. the bway audience is so used to such high-tech performances and perfect singing at the sacrifice of acting and emotion. they wouldn't understand how much a masterpiece this is, and the critics would 100% slam it
