The removal of undocumented immigrants from the US is at the centre of US President Donald Trump's domestic agenda. Two executive orders signed five days after he took office signal a radically broad approach to immigration enforcement.
While deportations under the Obama administration reached record highs - just under half a million in 2016 according to statistics from the Department of Homeland Security - it appears the Trump White House is determined to go further, and faster.
President Trump has promised thousands of new Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and border patrol agents in a bid to execute harsher punishments for immigration violations and facilitate deportations.
With local law enforcement threatened into proactive action within their own communities, immigrants have also mobilised to try and better understand their options and rights should ICE come knocking on their doors.
Fault Lines' Josh Rushing explores the shifting sands of deportation, speaking to families caught in the dragnet and communities determined to fight back.

Esteffani Morales I’m talking of the UK in the case of the wind rush generation the paperwork cost £35. They still chose not to do it. By the way I married an immigrant, a Dominican. We did it the legal way, my bank accounts were checked for savings, my salary had to exceed £26000, we had to pay for the visa, friends were interviewed about my character and my wife underwent a life in the UK test to see if she understood the customs, history, culture and language of the British people. So what? Yes it was hard but we paid and did what the government asked. Like citizens that respect the laws of the nation in which we wanted to build a life. Entering a country any other way should end in deportation or a prison sentence. I have no mercy for illegals, it’s their kids I feel sorry for being dragged along by abusive law breaking parents. When caught I’d send them back within hours, kids and all, no matter where they’re born, yes it’s hard but anything less sends the wrong message to others considering doing the same thing. Illegals spawning kids in a land they have effectively sneakily invaded should have no right to call their kids citizens of that country. You earn the right to call yourself a citizen, not sneak in and take other peoples jobs with false documents for 25 years whilst your kids get the benefits of a nation they should not be in.

In addition because he reports only half his income his children qualify for WIC. Who pays that? Americans. Five generations ago My family came to America LEGALLY. They came in through Ellis Island (a point of entry), they were vetted, went through health checks, then assimilated! They never spoke their native language again and never raised their old country’s flag again! They were proud to be American! They never took any handouts (came to America with a total of $1.75) and my family has worked and paid taxes for everything they have today! People crossing the border illegally and expecting to stay, undermines those that came here legally! Some families have waited years to come to America legally! If you break the law, you should never be allowed to come back legally! If anyone seeking Asylum, the LAW states you must do it at the point of entry! These families being split up is no one else’s fault but their own for not following the law!

That is why these people use the money from the taxpayer to control for their benefits, if you refuse to obey, they will use police or army to illegal suppress or confiscate your house where to live, land where to build the house, store where you work by own (For example, China). Moreover, some corrupted countries never care what people need and want, so the richest will use the money to purchase immigrant VISA to live legally in the top countries (For example, Nigeria, China, India, Pakistan, Cameron) while the poorest try to find illegal ways to stay in developed countries because the poorest cannot file Refugees Status due to the fact that his or her country did not under war or riots, just only corruption in here and they received none or few social benefits such as minimum wages did not meet living standards (For example: North Korea, China, Venezuela) , lack of free healthcare or education (For example: Vietnam), poor air pollution (For example: Vietnam, China, India) , weak currency (For example: Vietnam, Iran, Venezuela, Zimbabwe) . If they could change the structure in systems (That is hard if their countries followed US-allied or made the revolution but non of them followed), they would have better life. That is what I understood!

Splitting up families is a horrible thing, even if someone is a criminal it can devastate the mental health of children. Therefore, we should avoid it whenever possible. In the case of dangerous criminals, families must be separated to protect the safety of everyone. In the case where people are living peacefully and attempting to make ends meet here, shouldn't we avoid it because all it will cause is pain?

@@donnabullaro9408 In the mid 1800 there was not TRUMP ADM. Migration Services never charged them $2000 for interviews and they were never asked for what is called "SPONSOR" for at least 10 years. Check more about the process to be legal in 1800 and you will be less ignorant. I am in the process and I came with a Legal VISA and it has been 12 months waiting for my green card due to this Adm. People need to read more what is the term LEGAL AND ILLEGAL BETWEEN 1800 AND 2019

The people that don't want to wait whatever the reasons may be, who also jump the gun and are impatient face serious consequences and most of the time screw themselves over of their chances to be legalized in the USA again for a lifetime. I can't recall any law that protects wealthy individuals over the poor; maybe you could cite some for me. Every American citizen's rights are protected equally under the constitution. Alcohol prohibition clearly didn't work and is not around anymore; however, we still have a war on drugs, which can be solved by decriminalizing drug use. There are criminals in every country and in the west they are punished for their crimes. Breaking the law is not tolerated in America. Taking away guns would be unconstitutional and would violate every American's Second Amendment right. If you want to be in America, either comply with the laws or expect to face legal consequences.

Those girls who are US citizens and speaking spanish have rights to petition their aunt through USCIS. This little lady is out right lying. All she needs is a good immigration attorney a job and three years of tax returns showing she can sponsor her aunt so her aunt will not become a public charge on the welfare system. That is how you immigrate legally. Americans sponsor foreign nationals all the time by doing all the proper forms for their family member and going through USCIS. It is expensive but only to the US sponsor and not all of the other US taxpayers who have no connection to the person. That is how it works. Anyone who comes in any other way has broken US law and is subject to deportation and it did not start because of a new president. No one gets a free ride or at least should not and how is this fair to all those who did pay the legal fees, USCIS form fees and did immigrate legally? My sympathy goes to all the immigrants who did it legally...not this farce here.
