Your file might even be easier to use than a regular burnisher., with a better grip and more control as it's larger. Great idea

Many thanks Chris. This and your previous one on the Scary Sharpening are by far the most simple and helpful I’ve watched. My scary refill pack arrived today and that small piece of toughened safety glass I thought might come in handy has finally, after more than a decade, come in handy. Just need a vice now… (insert joke here)

That's an excellent demonstration of card scraper sharpening, very good video mate. I really like the reuse of the file edge - I've already used a long extension from a quarter inch socket set as a burnisher, but it never worked especially well. I'll definitely try sorting out an old file. Cheers mate, very enjoyable.

Really good method - easy to get consisten with, which is always the problem with these things. I used mine a lot as a cabinet maker & even then, the method I had learned meant that it wasn't an infrequent occurrance that I had to re-do a sharpening because I pulled an inconsistent edge 😝
As an aside, I see that our gracious host prefers pushing his scraper - I do recommend taking note of the fact that their german name (and the name we still call them in Danish) is "Ziehklinge", literally "Draw blade" or "Drag blade", indicating that you draw it towards you rather than push it. Both ways work, it's probably down to preference - but you can't try it if you don't know it 😁

@@jwcph I shall give pulling a try! Strange how I push and pull a hand plane but never thought to do so with a scraper! 👍

Pretty much the same process as I use, I use a file in a block of wood (a bit like the fret end file blocks but 90°) first to true up the edges then follow the same process, I also use a block with a slit in to hold the scraper in the vice to help stop it flexing when I use the burnisher.
I like the old file trick I think I may have to try that as I need a new burnisher 👍

@@barrychristian4050 I tend to skip the file flattening bit, maybe once in a blue moon. I’ve never worn a concave into my straight edge yet!

@@KingBespokeCreations fair enough, I probably do it out of habit more than of it needing it, but I can get away with 3-4 re- burnishings before having to start over.
I have also found I was pressing too hard when burnishing I use a much lighter pressure and get a great edge
