I was really in a pinch one day when trying to change the oil in my moms car. The bolt was on so tight that it stripped out when I tried to take it off. Luckily my dad had an Irwin extractor kit and it was still tough to get off but it worked! Highly recommended.

Remember jiffy lube employees: all pan bolts should be torqued to the jiffy lube spec of 250foot pounds.
Haha I am literally dealing with this on my boyfriends car right now. Bought a new one and gunna have to use extractors.
That tooo much
@@chrissample3047 jiffy lube just released a bulletin revising the 250 foot pound rating for oil drain plugs. They now want employees to use a breaker bar and tighten to 320 foot pounds.
Please make a note of it.
Probablyhe meant 25 instead 250
2500 foot pounds!@@juliantbh7158
I have a set of those extractors. They've saved my project a couple of times. It's a tool you use once in a while but you're glad you have it when you need it.
heck yea, that thing really got me out of a pinch that day. I swear I think oil change places put those things on at 150 lb-ft.
Like a tap and die set!!
@@Rythecarguythey definitely do 😂
Sometimes if your unlucky and the bolt/nut is rusted enough the extractors round it even more. And then your in for a not so fun time, best to bust the nut or cut the bolt at that point
I don't get it, every video on stripped bolts I've seen is an oil pan bolt, every oil pan bolt I've ever seen has been stripped to shit. I think mechanics are putting them back on tightening them as hard as there power tools can and purposefully stripping them so that we don't change our oil ourselves. So annoying lol.
Right!?! I think it's oil change shops and they are paranoid about the oil leaking so they tighten the hell out of it. Because if they are the cause of an oil leak and it ruins the Engine they are on the hook.
Way I did oil on mu new mondeo 2013 other week and the sump plug just loosely unscrewed with my fingers haha! Couldn't believe last person didn't even tighten it up
Those people are hacks. The spec is fine. You don't need to reef on it. I just crushed the washer then stopped.
Also think about the fact that its the bolt that's removed the most on vehicles so it's no surprise it's the most commonly striped
Bolt extractors have saved me twice getting stuck lug nuts off of wheels. Just make sure you already have a new set of nuts on hand if you try it. You won't be able to reuse the old ones after using bolt extractors on them.
One bolt can ruin your day! That’s why sometimes the fastest guy in the shop can break the most parts!
👍🏻
The very first thing you need to do is go down to the auto parts store and buy a new bolt before you take that loose. You do not want to be stuck having to put it back in after yoou change the oil!
The right tool for the right job. I’m glad you were able to get it out. 👍🏻
Thanks!
These things have gotten me out of some tough situations. I had a mounting bolt once on my 78 f250 on the front radiator support that stripped out. Completely locked in place by rust. I had to beat one of these on and use my huge impact with a swivel socket and an extension and it still came out. The middle of the bolt was literally missing half of its meat from rust. They have also worked on male pipe plugs.
I had to use this Irwin set for one of the cylinder head bolts on my plow truck, did the trick without any drama. I recommend them.
They are great right?
I got a set. They're fantastic.
Aren't they?! Damn they do a good job.
MAC RBRT, Turbo Sockets, Nut Twister Koken, lots of options. They all seem to work. The use of penetrating oil helps immensely. A torch too.
2 thumbs up. I’ve got a set myself and they’ve worked every time if used correctly. If you don’t have to tap them on with a hammer then you’re using them wrong. They have to fit rather snug to get a good bite.
I have the snap on versions. I’m pretty sure they are the exact same thing just with different names on. Fantastic bits of kit. Make a quick easy fix out of a potential nightmare.
Different price as well :-(
Just the video I needed to give me the confidence to tackle my bolt.
Heck yea. You got this... 💪🏻
What bolt! You don't own a car John!
I have that style and straight ridge bolt extractors. The straight ridge work well for extracting the bolt and even allows you to reuse bolts that would otherwise need to be replaced immediately, which I have had to do in the mountains so i didnt have to get someone to take me to town to get a replacement then take me back to replace the bolt to drive my vehicle out.
I bought a set of those at Harbor Freight and they saved me a lot of time and money they work
There is a hex head on the vice grip, use an Allen wrench to tighten the jaws. This can get you out of a jam.
Great tip!
I had this exact same thing happened on my Jeep Wrangler, someone put the oil pan bolt on probably with an impact driver, what a pain to remove, no one should ever torque down a bolt like that too much, just make it snug plus a quarter-turn
I have a set of these and actually used them to remove stripped lug nuts, worked like a champ. The brand I have is called RockDog I think, made in the USA, Project Farm tested.😎.
Definitely worth the bread.
I have that set. It works great. Helps if you soak the threads in pb blaster.
💪🏻💪🏻
these pair really well with a medium duty impact wrench. The teeth can grip well and you lower the chances of mangling the bolt further by hand.
Agreed.
I’m Asian and am not offended by the word “slanted”. Good job!
😂🤣
I have to get that today because the bottom bolt of the compressor on the 07 Civic is being a little tough
Or use a smaller size of the opposite standard. Works and free.
Try facing the pliers forward. The 22 degree offset must face forward.
I had a stripped caliper pin many years ago. This would have come in handy.
Get you a set. They are awesome to have around. I hate having to stop a job to figure out how to take out a difficult bolt.
I currently have a stripped caliper pin and it's one that only an open ended wrench will fit. What does one do in that case??
Man had to use these for all kinds of stuck bolts just got a whole big set for lug nuts hoping it works the same dealing with those dumb lug nut covers on the jeeps terrible idea to use those recommend replacing any fake lug nut covers with solid nuts
get a small pipe wrench. it will work every time.
Yep, pipe wrench just as good
NEVER, EVER
Thanks so much bro I have been considering pouring lighter fluid on my car and see if that will work 🔥
lol careful with all that.
Like Wrenching With Kenny says, you “ don’t have to go bananas 🍌!
I have the amartisan set from Amazon that project farm tested. If you think that’s rounded off you should have seen the rear brake caliper slide pin bolts on my rx330. Whoever did them last put no grease on them and they were rusted on. I had to take the caliper off, hammer the bolt biters on and then torque a cheater on a ratchet and a pry bar in opposite directions. At about 80 lbs/ft almost thought I wasn’t going to be able to get them off.
That customary fart with intense effort always does the trick
🤣
I’ve used this on many bolts and it’s a beauty but using this to extract wheel lug nuts it destroyed the socket more than the wheel lock nut I’m guessing wheel lock bugs are builded different I hope this info save you guys your extraction sockets
People who use their tools everyday do not consider that tools wear out and over time they end up with some crappy worn out socket and ruin the bolt they are trying to get loose. I find this a lot at work with people using hex keys. The end gets rounded off and they can't figure out why their hex key is spinning when they try to loosen a bolt.
Hex keys , are you referring to Allen wrenches .
That hammer use was A1
That how you use hammers right?
@@Rythecarguy I think you had it upside down
Do you have any tips for getting the bolt of of the tool if it’s stuck
Walk to where you won't hurt anything and throw it at the ground lol. 60% of the time, it works every time.
You’ll ruin a socket but if your in a pinch or tight on money just hammer a size smaller socket on it and it’ll come off I did the same thing with my oil drain plug
Used that remedy to remove two Bleeders from the calipers . You gotta do what you gotta do .
I tried that but it didn't.
Last asshole who did the oil change pretty sure he put some glue on it.
Good job I was taking bolts out on a truck bed Yorks striped got a new torks bit got a twist tool got bolts out but how come would you tight a oil drain that tight
Currently dealing with a stripped oil pan drain bolt myself. Valvoline tech tried to remove it, ended up chewing the hell out of the bolt and folding the edges over the top of it instead. It looks like mush. Figured this would be my wakeup call and do the work myself. They serviced it two previous times but I guess the second time one of the techs went sicko mode on the threads. Welp, never again. Better to do the work yourself if you can wing it and know someone cared.
Right on, this places are terrified about letting a leak start so they aren't liable if someone drive their car with no oil. So they go insane on the drain plug and the filter. So damn annoying .
Pipe wrench works also
Ok but now the extractor and stripped bolt are stuck, how do I get them apart?
Put it in a vice and hammer something through the back of the socket.
Really!!
I believe irwin / Hanson is owned by stanley black & decker. They also own mac & proto & dewalt
Nice.
How do you get the extra toe off the bolt? I had a stripper bolt, used an extractor and now I can’t get the bolt out of the extractor socket. 🥶🤦🏻♂️
Where is the link for the tool
Where's the link ?
So do you get the same size extractor as the stripped bolt?
Yes
What size bolt extracted you use
I have a stripped out ECT sensor but my extractors does not reach pass the harness part.. I’m debating if I should break it off so I could reach the bolt with my extractor socket but afraid it won’t come off
What happened to the extractor after?
Nothing, you pull the bolt out afterward and put it back in your toolbox. 👍🏻
@@Rythecarguy thanks a lot! Your reply helps me to decide getting it. I thought it will be damaged after you hit it with the hammer.
Appreciate you 🤜🤛
can you use these on nuts? i have a similar problem on a nut and need a way to take it off without messing up the bolt because i is welded onto the car so it would be a huge pain to take the bolt out as well.
Yes you absolutely can!
You definitely need some pipe to use as a breaker bar extender.
Got some upper strut bolts that are beyond corroded. About to try these or nut splitters on them. Hoping it works. Thanks for the vid!!
Did it work?
Afraid not man, the 14mm nuts are so corroded and seized that the nut wouldn't let go, even after split. Gonna have to have them torched I believe. Feel defeated at the moment.
Also, I tried the extractors and it still wouldnt turn.
@@curtthechameleon same issue man. I Might have to weld, or get a whole new pan 🥴
@@orlandovega6958 I had to have a guy torch them which is a delicate procedure.
Hey Ry, had to have those corroded nuts torched off. What a pain. But its done now.
What a pain, sorry to hear. Glad its resolved though!
Pipe wrench works every time if you can get it in the spot
🤘🏻🤘🏻
I think the ratchet is the real hero...
Identical to the craftsman models and costs alot more too
👍🏻
Must be a shevy Cruze , had the same issue
😆
One of the worst cars ever made tbh sorry to say. I’d get rid of it while you still can.
Whoever torqued at drain plug, that tight should have to have a vasectomy that way it stops at Jean pool I am not a perfect mechanic by any stretch but no one else is either but man I never did anything like that. This is six in a row.Jim from Kennerdell PA
Will this work if the head os broke off but the stud is sticking out?
If you put a small head on it it might work.
@@Rythecarguy thanks
i dont understand why drain plugs are not an oring design, if you have to crush the washer then isnt it logical that it will be over tightened
I agree that it's strange. However the crush washers will crush under pretty low pressure. People just go way overboard 😂
What’s the part?
??
Tip
Don’t use 12 point sockets on oil drain plugs
Ehhh it's fiiiiinnnneeee especially if you don't torque them down like crazy.
I bought myself a project bike for 1600$ i go to do an oil change on it and the oil bolt decided it wanted to play hulk and would not come off no mater how hard we turned until it rounded i then spent the next 2 weeks looking for an extraction kit and turned out that the only place that had a kit was the snap on truck… 500 dollars for extractors… my pocket hurt but I didn’t want to risk buying a cheap kit on amazon only for it to break or something
Oh come on!?!. you need to get that refunded.. but if 500 is just something you can part with over a stuck bolt ill gladly come work for you! You wont have any more tedious inconveniences like that anymore, I'll be sure of it
Them walmart oil changes 😅
I’m having trouble removing a stripped bolt that’s only accessible by a 10mm wrench with 1degree of freedom (clockwise/counterclockwise)
Fitting a tool like this is impossible.
Sounds like it. Bummer
The vice grips most likely caused the problem and will make it worse.. and it this extractor fails ???
Never trust a mechanic with a claw hammer
Lol I was at my parent's house. Had to use what they had.
Trying to muffler delete on my Infiniti , right bolt is stuck on keeping the muffler on , gonna get a set of these and hope for the best I’ll keep you all updated 😂😅
Yea lemme know. Hope they work for ya!
Try and find a pair of USA made Vise Grips I think they will work better than the pair you are using
But I already have the extractor...
My exhaust manifold bolts are rusty and rounding. Really hope extractor sockets can help 🙈
Good luck!
Learn which way to place your locking pliers
No thanks.
@Rthecarguy , great response , NOT ! Little smart-a$$ . Way to get subs .
I’ll send you a ball peen hammer so you don’t look like a carpenter!
Hahah I actually have one. I just never use it.
Got 5 of the 6 bolts off my exhaust .. hoping this does the job
You got this homie.
@@Rythecarguy ended up buying a harbor freight one and air hammered it on with an extension because I couldn’t get a good swing with a hammer.. ruined the extension but I could care less about that because It zipped right off with some heat
@@F12-i2g 🤘🏻🤘🏻
24 hour prep with WD40 or equivalent ,
On an oil plug?
You can borrow my 24 inch Snap on breaker bar.
Rbrt?
Using your vise-grips backwards 😂
Such a noob
i bought those and they suck ass they strip down easy
I have used them for years without issue.
That's why I use torque wrenches lol
Right on. Whoever put this on should be slapped.
I had some work done on my downpipe today, the guy at the muffler shop put the nut on one of the turbo flange studs crooked so it stopped the threads on the stud, will this help me with that nut? It goes to the very end of the stud then just spins.
No, if the stud is ruined you need to back the whole stud out,
@@Rythecarguy I mean obviously lol I’m going to need to rethread or use a new stud I meant does it work to extract the nut. I already got it out with a nut splitter though.
@@Rythecarguy thanks for replying
Haha sorry, you would be surprised the type of questions I get on here. Glad you got it off. 😃
@@Rythecarguy Thanks! But now I broke one of the turbo hard lines bending it, trying to fit this bigger turbo. LOL one thing after another. I’m going to replace the lines with braided steel hose.
Why would anyone or company want to use that type of bolt? shallow head with sloping base.
Me mad my boot extractor still couldn’t grip the bolt and they don’t come in 9mm
Maybe a breaker bar instead of a rachet
Naw
@@Rythecarguy 👍
Rye get some real tools. Are you kidding me with this…
You don't like the Irwin kit?!? I think they are pretty great.
I’m referring to The ratchet
@@mtn-endeavors67 ohhhh, yea I was at my parents house.
I don’t think that’s how you use a hammer lol
be nice, it was my first time 😂
He used it correctly in this instance.
My oil pan bolt was stripped at the thread side. Had to replace the pan with a new one.
Sorry to hear, that sucks!
Why TF did you use the SIDE OF THE HAMMER?!?!
lol because the hammer would not fit if I turned it the correct way. No room to swing.
This my friends, is why you use a torque wrench on things like oil pan bolts. So you don't fuck the next guy (or yourself) when it has to come off again. Ugga dugga caveman mechanics are the worst lol.
And vise versa too, my brother's car had a low oil pressure/check engine light pop up on the highway because the lube tech didn't tighten the drain bolt tight enough. Luckily he stopped his car before he ran out of oil.
omg, that's insane. I would be mega-pissed if someone didn't tighten the drain. glad he didn't blow it up.
Next time use a cheater bar, or workout those arms good job bro
💪🏻💪🏻
i remember my first time..
Rounding a bolt?
Hey mane do they be selling them at AutoZone
I'm sure they do.
brilliant!
Great tool huh?
Is that an SK ratchet❤
Yup 😃
Mine just rounded more
go one size down.
@Rythecarguy oh I tried that trust me tried everything but welding a nut on because my farther stole my mig I need to get 2 caliper bolts off just won't budge
Day 4 of my striped timing belt tensioner bolt :(
Oh man I'm sorry.
Those little bolts always strip!!! I recognize that engine and that’s stupid bolt!!!!
Right!?!
Did you fart😂😂😂😂 while in the process.
Lol not that i remember.
Pipe wrench
Maybe
That’s not the way you use a hammer by the way
Dang it. I knew it felt weird.
That must be a Ford bolt 👎
lol Chrysler
