That was a very good discussion Rami, I did not fully agree with what you said about GIS being deserted by surveyors. GIS is still an integral major part of any surveying engineering curriculum and so is photogrammetry and remote sensing. I agree with you that surveyors are not good in publicizing their field. This is why you see researches from other fields come to the geospatial field and adopt thing that we as surveyors have been doing for almost a century, re-brand them, give them different shiny names and claim them as theirs. For example, stereo photogrammetry becomes 3D computer vision and machine vision, statistical supervised image classification in remote sensing become machine learning and unsupervised image classification became deep learning, and so on. In the 90's I was doing my PhD at UW-Madison in surveying engineering. During my literature survey I came across a PhD thesis in computer vision that was defended in 1998. The thesis was about how to perform Relative Orientation of stereo image pairs, a problem that surveyors solved in 1930. The majority of the material in that thesis could be found in Wolf's or Moffit's photogrammetry books. Yet, not a single photogrammetry document was mentioned in the thesis reference list.
