I own the CD of this recording. The liner notes that came with it state that the band backing Tony Sheridan on this recording was Joey Dee & the Starlighters. They were from New Jersey and were the house band at the Peppermint Lounge in New York, and had a huge hit in the mid 60s called "Peppermint Twist". If you listen to it you can hear their "sound" is very similar to the instrumentation on this recording.

I wish, I had been an adult when this type of music AND the Beatles were in their heyday. This rocks, wow I could only imagine what it would be like in a place like the Cavern or a small stage pub hearing something with this much energy. NO autotune, NO crappy singing croaking like frogs or worse, but all fun. You can hear the fun they are having performing. I know you can find this music in some venues here and there but its work to find it. So wish I had been alive and an adult then, Music on the radio today is so lifeless and over perfected to me. Maybe it's just me. I wish they would play this on our indie stations where I live at least. Well I have youtube to get to hear it I an thankful for that!

The nonsense written here is amazing. Tony and the Beatbrothers, were a band in their own right, when recording for Polydor. The Philips records listed them under Star - combo. Not a single Beatle on them. In the early records, the drummer was Johnny Watson, then Tony Cavanough, an African American. He only lasted a short while. Jimmy Doyle from Dublin is on all the Star - Combo recordings. The reason they were called that was Tony himself was contracted to Polydor, hence on some recordings he was listed as Dan Shery. How I know that ? Married to the saxophone player for 53 years.

The story about there name is really funny, the Beatles toured as support band under the name of the Silver Beatles, long before they became famous. Believe what you want to.

Had Tony Sheridan not already been contracted to Polydor then he would have become the lead singer for the Beatles, almost beyond any reasonable doubt. The Beatles wanted an accomplished lead vocalist because they were not confident in their own vocals. They used Tony Sheridan for the Decca audition of January 1, 1962. I maintain that they stood Paul McCartney down for that session because they thought that Sheridan could cover the McCartney vocal range for the tracks they covered, and he did, but then the Best drumming did not cover for the lack of bass. Missed the contract..

I was at the same school in Norwich as him; he was the singer with 'The Saints' skiffle group.A bunch of us would get together in the Music Rooms at lunchtimes and play Skiffle; sometimes Mac would be there, sometimes Kenny Packwood, The Saints' rhythm guitarist, sometimes anybody with a guitar. I was learning 'Cello at the time, and tried to provide bass lines. I was crap , but McGinnity and Packwood never told me to clear off!

Unfortunately this actually not the Beatles behind tony on this particular recording. That IS Roy Young organ but this is actually Tony's backing band from the Star Club. The recordings with The Beatles backing Tony were not recorded live in front of an audience, they were only a couple of them recorded in an empty auditorium somewhere else in Germany outside of Hamburg actually. This IS a great Tony Sheridan performance however. One of his very best. Hands down.

This track was on an EP which also featured a Beatles collaboration in Sweet Georgia Brown, but I think this song more defines better what was Hamburhg szene and what it was all about. I alos respect Swanis personality and this choice to priorities spirituality in late years,

This group was still called the Beat brothers, but no one from the Beatles was in the group, for the simple reason that they were no longer in Hamburg. Actually you can hear Tony say "A little bit of Roy Young there" just before the organ solo. Listen to the guitar solo near the end... pure Sheridan, brilliant ! Tony Sheridan said that John in those days had a magnetic personality. Everybody wanted to be with him or sit next to him. He was wild and the German fans adored him. At first they thought Paul might be gay due partly to his high arched eyebrows. Years later John performed this song on the end of one of his albums. From memory I think it was John Lennons Rock & Roll.

Remembering Sheridan born on May 21, 1940. He was an English rock and roll guitarist who spent much of his adult life in Germany. He was best known as an early collaborator of the Beatles (though the record was labelled as being with "The Beat Brothers"), one of two non-Beatles (the other being Billy Preston) to receive label performance credit on a record with the group, and the only non-Beatle to appear as lead singer on a Beatles recording which charted as a single. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Sheridan

This is a later performance of this song by Tony. The original recording had no Beatles on it and this has no Beatles on it.

None of The Beatles are here.
Tony Sheridan on lead vocal with Roy Youngs band.
But this version can be found on several Beatles Compilations along with the six tracks Tony did with The Beatles.

It was Tony's band and Roy Young was on Hammond organ.

Yes,but however,Bert continues the name long after the Beatles left him,no doubt to "Cash In" on the name, once the word came out about what you said. The CD has the other group's line-up at its end,BTW.

everyone who was good had a good grip on the sound of rock and roll like Tony Sheridan and kept it constantly good. The experimentation of later years did bring in some great progression in this genre, but it was not continued well, after it became too big and the money and the degradation corrupted the music business and misdirected the talent that there was.

This can't be Tony Sheridan with the Beatles on stage in 1962.
    Stuart Sutcliffe left in 1961.
The sound of the recording is too clear.
    Who was playing the keyboard?

The Beatles were Good with Everything...even if another Singer is Singing 😮....This shows why they are the Greatest!!!....even if the Stones are still performing!!!...they still can't be the Beatles!!!😮

When Lee Dorsey's version of this was a hit in the USA, some stations refused to play it, calling it "too suggestive". Well, maybe, but of what? They might have guessed constipation or masturbation, but it could just as easily been about waiting for a date to arrive. The station owners must have had quite active imaginations.
